Book excerpt: The joyous spirit of Christmas, sharing and caring, are at the heart of the three stories and 60 illustrations in "The Harry and Lola Christmas Collection". Children love to help and want to be loved. Each story inspires these characteristics in the reader. "Harry and Lola Meet Santa Paws" begins the story of this new Christmas legend. Rescued Scotties Harry and Lola meet Santa Paws-once one of Santa's helpers, who takes food and treats to needy dogs all over the world on Christmas Eve. Harry and Lola ride with Santa Paws on a Christmas Eve adventure. During the night they meet many dogs in need of help, but the thrill of the night comes when they assist Santa Paws and his team of sled dogs in rescuing a puppy from a band of marauding hyenas. Though terrified of the hyenas, Lola discovers she has true courage after all, and Santa Paws invites the pair back to ride again next Christmas Eve. At the end of the book kids are invited to become a part of Santa Paws' team of helpers by making any size or type of contribution to any dog rescue organization. Then they can email Harry and Lola at [email protected] to receive an official personalized poster showing they are part of the Santa Paws team. "Harry and Lola Help Santa Paws", returns the pair as Christmas Eve helpers, but this time they bring a friend. Just before they leave to meet Santa Paws they find a neglected young Corgi which they name Prince. Prince needs a home but there is no time to deal with that, so they bring him with them to help Santa Paws. Before going on their Christmas Eve world tour giving treats and food to dogs, the Christmas troupe has to rescue dogs that have been injured in a Christmas Eve tornado. Prince discovers strength and courage he didn't know he had. When Prince works to help dogs in need, he discovers his passion for his life and Santa Paws discovers an apprentice. At the end of the story readers are again invited to become part of Santa Paw's team. "Bernie's First Christmas" is about the newest member of Harry and Lola's rescued Scottie dog family. Having spent the first six months of his life in a small cage, never seeing the sun or a blue sky, Bernie is in love with his new life. That love and passion sometimes gets him in trouble. So ... when Christmas stockings are hung by the fireplace and Lola tells Bernie they mean good dogs will receive presents on Christmas, Bernie wonders if he has been a good dog. He explores all the things he's done wrong since coming to his new home and concludes, "There isn't going to be a Christmas for Bernie." Kids love this story because they can relate to Bernie's concern. They also love the ending! All profits from the sale of "The Harry and Lola Christmas Collection" go to Aberdeen Scottish Terrier Rescue.

Book excerpt: Bernie is a young rescued Scottie. He has just learned about Christmas. But he learned that only good dogs will receive Christmas presents. As he begins to think about the things he has done since coming to his new home, he wonders if he has been a good dog. The more he thinks about it, the more concerned he becomes. Will there be any Christmas for Bernie?! Bernie joined Harry and Lola in 2011. They were a happy pack. Eventually, Harry and Lola joined Starprancer as angels. Jean had to deal with two rounds of cancer and didn't have the energy for a few years to work with another three-Scottie pack. Then one day a friend sent an email about a bonded pair of Scotties who needed to be rescued. Knowing that it can be difficult to get a bonded pair adopted, Jean and her husband discussed the possibility of adopting the pair. They decided to give it a try and in July 2017, Piper and Chewy joined Bernie to make the three-dog pack complete again. The wonderful organization who sponsored Piper and Chewy is Three Rivers Humane Society, a no-kill rescue organization located in Madras, OR 97741. Because Aberdeen Scottish Terrier Rescue is no longer in Oregon, we will donate the profits from this book to Three Rivers Humane Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweet holiday love story about the magic of synchronicity and fate set at a quaint Vermont inn during the week after Christmas. Emma can’t believe her luck when she finds an open pawn shop on Christmas Eve in Manhattan. She’s there to sell the beautiful bracelet her ex-boyfriend gave her when a familiar looking watch catches her eye. It’s the same engraved watch she gave her college boyfriend, Fletcher, years ago. On a whim, she trades the bracelet for the watch and wonders at the timing. Practical Emma thinks it’s just a coincidence, but her best friend Bronwyn believes it’s the magic of synchronicity that caused Emma to find the watch. Fletcher was the one that got away, and somehow Emma never quite moved on. When Bronwyn finds out that Fletcher is in snowy Vermont at a romantic inn for the week, she can’t help but give synchronicity a push. She signs Emma up to help the inn keeper as the children’s activity coordinator. Emma agrees that a week filled with quaint shops and maple syrup would do her good... and maybe Fate really does have a Christmas gift in store for her. That is until she sees Fletcher with his daughter and fiancée. Suddenly, the fairytale trip seems doomed to fail... much like the innkeeper’s dwindling cashflow. It will take a miracle to save her heart and the inn. And that just might be what Fate has in mind. Christmas in Vermont is a delightful and charming love story about the magic of second chances during the most festive time of year.

Book excerpt: “Very funny, very unpleasant, and very moving.” —Michael Palin Harry Christmas is unable to cope with the death of his wife and has been bouncing from one bad decision to the next. After a terrifying assault by the son of a woman he has conned, he makes up his mind to leave the country. Now Harry Christmas is on the run. On a mission to track down his wife’s ancestral village, Christmas arrives in Venezuela certain that his fortunes are about to improve. He’s dead wrong. Soon out of money and luck, he is forced into yet more deceit—with devastating consequences for those he has fooled. Lost, drunk, and lurching across rural Venezuela, Christmas reaches the point of breakdown. He wakes up in a village at the end of the world. He is hanging by one leg from a tree. Inspired by the mighty Lola Rosa, he tries to crawl out of his spiritual abyss and find a way to live amongst these fishermen and farmers—but love isn’t easy when you are a career liar still married to the dead. As the real trouble begins, can redemption survive? Published in the UK to great acclaim, A Bright Moon for Fools is a comic novel that is as funny as it is heartbreaking. Jasper Gibson’s debut marks the arrival of a bold new voice in fiction. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: Carrie Ritter runs away to the wilds of Alaska with Bart McFee, a manly yet gentle fugitive from society, to escape her repetitive life in southern California where she has experienced one too many failed relationships. A harrowing plane ride and dog-sled trek later Carrie is shocked when she arrives at a tiny, wood-heated cabin with an outhouse set a daunting distance away amid a waist-high October snowfall. She finds surviving in her new world bewildering and uncomfortable. She is forced to deal with sled dogs, wolves, sub-zero temperatures, blizzards, cabin fever and an eccentric native Alaskan intruder but the majestic scenery dazzles her and the rigors of frontier life give her a bracing sense of self-sufficiency. Eventually she falls in love with her cabin mate and the natural landscape that defines her new life until the suffocating winter darkness sets in and her struggle to survive begins in earnest... Kirkus Discoveries says this about Thirty Below: ..".when Groome tests his characters, human and animal, against the wilderness, he moves us with the harshness and beauty of an uncivilized world. The result is a gripping portrait of life stripped to the bare essentials."
