Book excerpt: Hermann Gunkel was a scholar in the generation of the origins of Assyriology, the spectacular discovery by George Smith of fragments of the “Chaldean Genesis,” and the Babel-Bibel debate. Gunkel’s thesis, inspired by materials supplied to him by the Assyriologist Heinrich Zimmern, was to take the Chaoskampf motif of Revelation as an event that would not only occur at the end of the world but had already happened at the beginning, before Creation. In other words, in this theory, one imagines God in Genesis 1 as first having battled Rahab, Leviathan, and Yam (the forces of Chaos) in a grand battle, and only then beginning to create. The problem with Gunkel’s theory is that it did not simply identify common elements in the mythologies of the ancient Near East but imposed upon them a structure dictating the relationships between the elements, a structure that was based on inadequate knowledge and a forced interpretation of his sources. On the other hand, one is not entitled to insist that there was no cultural conversation among peoples who spent the better part of several millennia trading with, fighting, and conquering one another. Creation and Chaos attempts to address some of these issues. The contributions are organized into five sections that address various aspects of the issues raised by Gunekl’s theories.

Those thoughts, like all thought, traveled their own paths before written words, and the thoughts they created moved us from the contemplation of ancestry to thoughts like spirits within us, who give us life, then leave when we die; and, further, to other spirits who connect us to that other world where the ancestors live, and will transport there where we die. From ethereal mists to cadres of entities who oversee our lives, we have thought and dreamed about who we are, what we are, and why. While our visions vary, have led to wars, they have also stimulated thoughts about our similarities, our increasingly common navigation toward recognition that we are all people, just people. Quite a feat for a recently evolved Primate, living on a large rock in a solar system. We have emerged from the open Savannah, and over a long period of time, discovered that, while we are spread across the planet, we are one people. All from our experience with small shapes which, with our words and feelings, have merged to generate a concept which tells us with certainty, that yes, we are people, and we have sensed a larger world beyond us. This, I find a marvelous triumph for living beings, on a small planet in the middle of an enormous universe.

Billiards can nowadays be created as quantum dots in the microscopic world enabling one to envisage the so-called quantum chaos, i.e.quantum manifestation of chaos of billiard balls. In fact, owing to recent progress in advanced technology, nanoscale quantum dots, such as chaotic stadium and antidot lattices analogous to the Sinai Billiard, can be fabricated at the interface of semiconductor heterojunctions. This book begins itsexploration of the effect of chaotic electron dynamics on ballistic quantum transport in quantum dots with a puzzling experiment on resistance fluctuations for stadium and circle dots. Throughout the text, major attention is paid to the semiclassical theory which makes it possible to interpretquantum phenomena in the language of the classical world. Chapters one to four are concerned with the elementary statistical methods (curvature, Lyapunov exponent, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and escape rate), which are needed for a semiclassical description of transport in quantum dots.
