Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Prophetic traditions of Islam, which are commonly referred to as the hadiths (literally: 'reports'), preserve the sum and substance of the utterances, deeds, directives, and descriptive anecdotes connected with the life of the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions. Together with the Qur'an, the hadiths provide the religion of Islam with its principal scriptural sources. The collection features an accessible and informative introduction which presents an outline of the significance of the hadiths within the religious tradition while also reviewing classical scholarship devoted to the literature of the traditions; moreover, the introduction decisively sets into context the academic debates and arguments which are fleshed out in the articles selected. It also charts developments in the academic study of hadiths, summing up the current state of the field and features a detailed bibliography listing primary classical sources germane to the field of Prophetic traditions together with recent research monographs and articles devoted to the subject. This Major Work provides an authoritative collection of the seminal research articles produced by western academic scholarship on the subject of the hadith over the past century, including recent papers on the subject. In bringing together the finest examples of scholarship devoted to the hadith and the classical literature that surrounds it, these volumes provide an indispensable reference resource for academics, research institutions, governmental organizations, and those with a general interest in Arabic and Islamic Studies, Religious Studies, Arabic Cultural Studies, and Middle East History." -- Publisher description.

Book excerpt: In today’s complex and volatile world the consequences of relying on fraudulent and counterfeit Hadith to legitimize extremist behavior, issue violent fatwas, and justify blatant abuse, particularly of women, is not only far too easy but in fact dangerous. Israr Khan addresses the sensitive topic of Hadith authentication, focusing on the criteria adopted by classical scholars to maintain that concentration on the continuity and accuracy of the chain of narrators, rather than the textual content of Hadith, has led to particular Hadith being included which either contradict other Hadith directly, project the Prophet (SAAS) in an uncharacteristic light, or do not reflect and/or conflict with the teachings of the Qur’an. The study traces in careful detail the historical development of the oral and written traditions, as well as the many targeted attempts at fabrication that took place, critiquing in methodical detail certain Hadith which have come to be widely accepted as “authentic.” The prominent collections we have today, were made possible by the development of the science of Hadith criticism, and Muslim scholars deserve deep appreciation for their painstaking work, as well as their invaluable contribution towards preserving the Hadith literature to the best of their ability. However, insists the author, the process is ongoing, and the closed door policy which currently surrounds Hadith authentication needs to be carefully reexamined.

Book excerpt: Since the Prophetic traditions were an important source for the development of Islamic law, Jurisprudence and Qur'anic interpretation, the community had to know which traditions were reliable, and which were clearly fraudulent. But the problems of hadĭth have led to much disunity over authenticity and have led to the development of the complex science of hadĭth because it serves as an additional link between Prophet Muhammad (pbup) and the Qur'an. One can question the authenticity of the hadĭth, which contradict the Qur'an; if one were to dismiss the whole corpus of hadĭth, the very foundations of practiced Islam would be threatened. As some orientalists have wisely remarked that, whilst they are prepared to believe that no real books were produced before A.H.120, they cannot believe that traditions before this trusted wholly to memory and had not at least written notes. In 1848 Gustav Weil, remarked that after noting that, 'al-Bukhari' deemed only 4,000 of his original 600,000 hadĭth are authentic. He also suggests that a European critic would reject at least half of these 4,000. Aloys Sprenger, who also suggests that many of the hadĭth, material cannot be considered authentic?

Book excerpt: Classical Islamic sources suggest that during the lifetime of the Prophet(pbuh) and his Companions, the Sunnah had existed integrally as part of a 'living' phenomenon which his peers were encouraged to emulate. The traditional understanding was that despite earlier reservations, the Prophet (pbuh) had permitted his Companions to record his very words and deeds. However, more decisively, upon the Prophet's (pbuh) passing and the demise of his Companions, later scholarship felt compelled to safeguard his religious legacy for posterity and the move towards the codification of the reports connected with his lifetime afforded a means of physically preserving all aspects of his living legacy. Again, traditional sources refer to the role of prominent luminaries from the early periods such as the Umayyad caliph 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz (d. 99-101/717-737), Abe Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Hazm (d. 120/737) and the jurist Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri (d. 124/742), all are mentioned actively involved in efforts to preserve and codify hadĭth literature and its complementary Sunna.

Book excerpt: Many existing introductions to Islam focus predominantly on the Middle East and on historical background at the expense of Islam as a lived faith. Assessing Islam as a truly global phenomenon, Catharina Raudvere engages thoroughly with history, (explaining the significance of the revelation of the Prophet Muhammad and the origins of the different Sunni and Shi'a groups within Islam), while also giving full and comprehensive coverage to Muslim ritual life and Islamic ethics. She discusses moral debates and modern lifestyle issues such as halal consumption, interfaith dialogue and controversy over the wearing of the veil. Diaspora communities are considered with a view to showing how norms and doctrines are understood - and sometimes contradicted - in social and ritual practice. In addition, the author focuses on the meaning and continuing application to modern life of the Quran and hadith as sources for Islamic theology (kalam) and jurisprudence (fiqh). The book gives much attention to questions of universal values, Islam and democracy, gender issues, women's rights and pluralism, contrasting the thinking of Jihadists and radical Islamism with liberal reformist voices within Islam. Islam: An Introduction offers undergraduate students of religion and general readers a balanced, sensitive and well informed overview of the world's most intensively discussed religious and cultural tradition.

Book excerpt: Islamic foundations (waqf, pl. awqāf) have been an integral part of Yemeni society both for managing private wealth and as a legal frame for charity and public infrastructure. This book focuses on four socially grounded fields of legal knowledge: fiqh, codification, individual waqf cases, and everyday waqf-related knowledge. It combines textual analysis with ethnography and seeks to understand how Islamic law is approached, used, produced, and validated in selected topics of waqf law where there are tensions between ideals and pragmatic rules. The study analyses central Zaydī fiqh works such as the Sharḥ al-azhār cluster, imamic decrees, fatwās, and waqf documents, mostly from Zaydī, northern Yemen. Book excerpt: The main premise on which this book rests is that the belief that all prophets including Jesus and all divine revelations including the Injil had basically the same beliefs – Islam. Thus, this work examines whether the Gospel of Barnabas actually promotes Islamic beliefs about Jesus and the Injil. The method used is that of comparing the beliefs of Islam using the Qur’an and Hadith to that stated in the gospel. The major area which this book examines is the isnad of the gospel to establish whether it is authentic according to Islam. This work covers new ground as it critically explores the Islamic credentials of the gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AN INDEPENDENT BEST BOOKS ON RELIGION 2014 PICK Few things provoke controversy in the modern world like the religion brought by Prophet Muhammad. Modern media are replete with alarm over jihad, underage marriage and the threat of amputation or stoning under Shariah law. Sometimes rumor, sometimes based on fact and often misunderstood, the tenets of Islamic law and dogma were not set in the religion’s founding moments. They were developed, like in other world religions, over centuries by the clerical class of Muslim scholars. Misquoting Muhammad takes the reader back in time through Islamic civilization and traces how and why such controversies developed, offering an inside view into how key and controversial aspects of Islam took shape. From the protests of the Arab Spring to Istanbul at the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and from the ochre red walls of Delhi’s great mosques to the trade routes of the Indian Ocean world, Misquoting Muhammad lays out how Muslim intellectuals have sought to balance reason and revelation, weigh science and religion, and negotiate the eternal truths of scripture amid shifting values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fethullah Gülen, a contemporary scholar of Islam and activist with a large worldwide following, has spent his entire life studying and teaching the Sunnah, the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad, pbuh. This book explores his holistic approach to the vast knowledge of hadith and how he puts his focus on practical interpretations of the Sunnah. Dr. Erdil shows, through the example of Gulen, that it is possible to provide solutions to the problems at the individual, familial and social levels today if the way of the Prophet is studied in detail and interpreted within the context of the current era.
