Book excerpt: The true story of a Romany childhood... Gypsy Princess is a searingly honest account of what life is really like for travelling communities, for girls in particular, and captures a way of life that is slowly fading away. If you enjoyed the memoirs of Mikey Walsh and Jess Smith, you'll be enthralled by Violet Cannon's biography. 'A fascinating and enjoyable insight into Gypsy life' - Closer A true blooded Gypsy, Violet Cannon grew up the Romany way. Life was tough at times, living in a cramped one-roomed trailer, but, unbound by strict routines, Violet spent her days learning to keep home, playing and roaming the fields with a sense of freedom long lost to the rest of modern society. Immersed in the Gypsy way of life, her childhood set her apart from other children. Bullied by classmates, and segregated from 'gorgia' kids (all non-Gypsies), Violet eventually left school at the age of nine to live a life of travel, play and learning under generations-old Gypsy rules on the fringes of society. With traditional values at the heart of her childhood, the pressure of conforming and marrying young was intense. Violet was duty-bound to find a husband, but would her marriage lead to the 'happy ever after' she grew up believing in as a Gypsy girl? What readers are saying about Gypsy Princess: 'A fascinating and realistic look at what it means to be a Gypsy in today's society. A little understanding of Gypsy traditions goes a long way and I hope we see more biographies like this one' 'Violet is so likeable and warm, and the stories are written so vividly that you can really imagine yourself there' 'I could not put this book down - from the first paragraph I was hooked. I would love to read more about this fascinating lady and her family. By the end of the book I felt as if I knew them all'

Book excerpt: BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Terry Brooks's The Measure of the Magic. Terry Brooks won instant acclaim with his phenomenal New York Times bestseller The Sword of Shannara. Its sequels earned Brooks legendary status. Then his darkly enthralling The Word and the Void trilogy revealed new depths and vistas to his mastery of epic fantasy. Armageddon’s Children and The Elves of Cintra took Brooks’s remarkable mythos to a breathtaking new level by delving deep into the history of Shannara. And now, The Gypsy Morph rounds out–with an adventure of unforgettably imaginative scope–the first phase of a new chapter in this classic series. Eighty years into the future, the United States is a no-man’s-land: its landscape blighted by chemical warfare, pollution, and plague; its government collapsed; its citizens adrift, desperate, fighting to stay alive. In fortified compounds, survivors hold the line against wandering predators, rogue militias, and hideous mutations spawned from the toxic environment, while against them all stands an enemy neither mortal nor merciful: demons and their minions bent on slaughtering and subjugating the last of humankind. But from around the country, allies of good unite to challenge the rampaging evil. Logan Tom, wielding the magic staff of a Knight of the Word, has a promise to keep–protecting the world’ s only hope of salvation–and a score to settle with the demon that massacred his family. Angel Perez, Logan’s fellow Knight, has risked her life to aid the elvish race, whose peaceful, hidden realm is marked for extermination by the forces of the Void. Kirisin Belloruus, a young elf entrusted with an ancient magic, must deliver his entire civilization from a monstrous army. And Hawk, the rootless boy who is nothing less than destiny’s instrument, must lead the last of humanity to a latter-day promised land before the final darkness falls. The Gypsy Morph is an epic saga of a world in flux as the mortal realm yields to a magical one; as the champions of the Word and the Void clash for the last time to decide what will be and what must cease; and as, from the remnants of a doomed age, something altogether extraordinary rises.

At least it was, until Shaw Valance comes to town. The notorious Hollywood actor is starring in a movie based on the town's infamous murder. When he's not on set, Shaw hovers at the garage, watching as they build his custom motorcycle and irritating her with his handsome smile. He was supposed to leave once filming wrapped and go back to his fancy life, not buy the house next door. But Shaw might regret that purchase once Presley's ex-fiancé returns, bringing with him a war between old rivals that could burn both their houses down.

Book excerpt: Romany Gypsy True stories, Bittersweet and sometimes funny, from my childhood.1943 to 1959. Family History: Lords, Ladies, and Gypsies going back over 700 hundred years. These are true Romany Gypsy stories from my childhood as I remember them, with a little bit of the author's artistic licence to make them more enjoyable. If you are looking for stories that romanticise a Romany Gypsy life on the open road, then this book is probably not for you. However if you are interested in the true life of Romany Gypsy's, you may find this book interesting. Not all Romany Gypsies lived in wagons but more often houses, preferring a permanent base where they couldn't be told to move on, but still travelling and living the gypsy life in their horse-drawn vardo wagons, carrying on the Romany traditions of flower and rag rug making, duckering (fortune-telling), and hawking (selling) flowers and firewood logs from a horse-drawn cart, as me and mum did, travelling back and forth from the gypsy Camp on Belverdere Marshes the hop picking and fruit farms. Many kept their carts and horses in their backyards as we did. Some had vardos (horse-drawn wagons) and houses, as did my grandad's sister, Ocean. Family History: Lords, Ladies, and Gypsies going back to over 700 hundred years. We are related to Princess Di and her boys, for me and I suppose you [Lenny Harvey] are the same generation as me. I think that makes her our fifteenth cousin once-removed (that means fifteen generations back, we shared a grandad).Winston Churchill is also our thirteenth cousin three times removed. The removed bit means they are not of the same generation as us. Diana is actually of my mum's generation, and Winston is the same generation as my great grandad. Sarah Ferguson and her daughters are also our cousins. We share a great granddad back in the 1400s called Richard Yate. I met HRH Prince of Wales in 1996 in Crimea, Ukraine. At the time, I was not aware that he was family. He never mentioned it either. Sadly none of the family were invited to either Diana or Sarah's wedding. Probably with all our travelling about they lost our address.

Book excerpt: GYPSY PRINCESS recounts heartaches and joys, fears and tears of a young girl and her close knit family who were torn apart and ravaged by war, reunited in Austria and made their way to the safe shores of America. GYPSY PRINCESS is a unique view of the other side of the story. It's different and nothing you have read before because most stories about World War II are written by German solders or Jewish refugees - this is a young woman's perspective of the war as she wandered like a gypsy through nine countries ending up in North Dakota.

Book excerpt: Venture deep into the Mystic Forest, an enchanted land where animals speak and nature spirits dwell. Follow the adventures of Kriya as she embarks on a search for her beloved cat, the Princess of Freedom. Watch her transform as she discovers the courage of her heart and learns the lessons of surrender. The Princess of Freedom teaches us to be guided by the heart and trust the wisdom of love. In the format of an adventure story, young people are presented the life lessons of letting go and forgiveness. They will learn to see the beauty and grace of our natural world, and to appreciate the wisdom of the animals as guides and teachers for humanity. Recommended for young people and their parents, for teachers, therapists, and truth seekers of all ages. EDITORIAL REVIEWS “The Princess of Freedom is an enchanting, delightful story for children, as well as the young at heart. It is beautifully told, with poetry and lovely pictures interspersed. The message of the book is deeply spiritual, while remaining light and fun. I would urge anyone who loves animals and wants spiritual nourishment to read this sweet book.” —Barbara Shor, DVM, Animal Communicator, author of SOUL OF THE WILD: Intimate Messages from the Hearts and Souls of Elephants and Whales. “Through creative storytelling, Tarra teaches the core fundamentals every child needs to build a healthy foundation of values in a way that is playful, spirited, and adventurous. As a trauma therapist who uses EMDR with children and adults, I believe this book can help my clients identify and heal the wounds of their own childhood trauma.” —Treva R. Rawlings, LCPC, Rawlings Community Counseling “The Princess of Freedom weaves profound life lessons into a wholesome and delightful tale. From a teacher’s perspective, I see it as literature to stimulate the imagination and creativity of a child. With the proliferation of violence in our society and hard-core social issues given considerable prominence in our schools, it is refreshing to find literature with such a level of innocence carrying so powerful a message.” —Phyllis Blain, Elementary teacher “Tarra Light has crafted a story that speaks with deep wisdom and authority about personal challenges, beliefs, and the power of the awakened heart to overcome anything. The book has an elegant simplicity that can appeal to children and adults. The use of multiple layers of archetypes, most of which are familiar from many common mythologies and legends, is cleverly woven throughout the narrative. I absolutely love the energy of the illustrations, and they complement the story very well. All in all, a real gem of a story...with truth at its center.” —Isaac George, Spiritual and Astrological Counselor / Mentor

Famed puppeteer and master manipulator Walter Gray surprises his three daughters by announcing there is a fourth at his 80th birthday party. An incomplete paternity test—and a will that places a condition on each daughter’s inheritance—suggest that the missing daughter isn’t a figment of his dementia. Jane, the eldest, is tired of her father’s eccentricities. She remembers the scarcity of her childhood and doesn’t want another sister to share the birthright. Rosie, born out of wedlock, sees the missing sister as her key to acceptance as a full member of the puppeteer’s family. Cora, the youngest, born after Walter achieved fame and fortune, is most concerned with extricating herself from running Walter’s company so that she can pursue her own life. The sisters each knew a different version of their enigmatic father, but all grew up in the presence of fairy tales acted out with marionettes and shadow puppets. If they are to find the fourth daughter and claim the legacy their father has left them, the three must confront their fractured relationships with their father and each other. Infused with fairy tales that sometimes spill magic into the sisters’ real lives, The Puppeteer’s Daughters is a stunningly-woven family saga about the cost and rewards of claiming a creative life.
