In this vast time-span, south-east Wales has been at the heart of historic changes that have affected both England and Wales. Volume 2 covers the history of Gwent from pre-historic times to the twentieth century. It deals with the Age of the Marcher Lordships, 1070-1536, from the coming of the Norman conquerors to the acts of Union between Wales and England, dealing with many aspects of the region's history. The third volume in this fascinating series is a study of the early modern period, from the creation of Monmouthshire by the Act of Union in 1536 to the beginnings of industrialization in the later eighteenth century. It explores the social concerns of this period, including the growth of urbanity and the commercial world, education, poverty and civil war, as well as religion, politics and landownership. The fourth volume in the county history of Gwent/Monmouthshire deals with the explosion of industrial development from 1780 to the eve of the First World War, and as such is first authoritative treatment of the transformation of south-east Wales into a centre of the iron and coal industry. Its comprehensive e treatment encompasses social and economic developments, cultural and language changes whose legacy is with us still, political and religious movements that created new loyalties and identities among the county's population, and all in a period that saw the transformation of what was hitherto a rural county into one that was a significant part of industrial and commercial Britain. At the same time, the population expanded at a greater pace than ever before, with migrations of industrial workers that altered the linguistic and cultural make-up of the county. Chapters deal with the rural life, the iron, steel and coal industries, communications and commerce, population movements and their implications for urban society and the spoken languages and literacy, the relationship between Church and chapel, developments in education, recreation and the arts, local government and the place of Monmouthshire in national politics, culminating in popular opinion and protest (including Chartism and trade unionism in an industrialised society).

Book excerpt: Moving beyond the (now somewhat tired) debates about secularization as paradigm, theory, or master narrative, Periodizing Secularization focuses upon the empirical evidence for secularization, viewed in its descriptive sense as the waning social influence of religion, in Britain. Particular emphasis is attached to the two key performance indicators of religious allegiance and churchgoing, each subsuming several sub-indicators, between 1880 and 1945, including the first substantive account of secularization during the fin de siecle. A wide range of primary sources is deployed, many of them relatively or entirely unknown, and with due regard to their methodological and interpretative challenges. On the back of them, a cross-cutting statistical measure of 'active church adherence' is devised, which clearly shows how secularization has been a reality and a gradual, not revolutionary, process. The most likely causes of secularization were an incremental demise of a Sabbatarian culture (coupled with the associated emergence of new leisure opportunities and transport links) and of religious socialization (in the church, at home, and in the school). The analysis is also extended backwards, to include a summary of developments during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; and laterally, to incorporate a preliminary evaluation of a six-dimensional model of 'diffusive religion', demonstrating that these alternative performance indicators have hitherto failed to prove that secularization has not occurred. The book is designed as a prequel to the author's previous volumes on the chronology of British secularization - Britain's Last Religious Revival? (2015) and Secularization in the Long 1960s (2017). Together, they offer a holistic picture of religious transformation in Britain during the key secularizing century of 1880-1980.

This book considers its rise as a seaside resort and reveals a history that is much more complex, lengthy and important than has previously been recognized. As conventionally told, the story of the Island as tourist resort begins in the 1890s, when the railway arrived in Barry. In fact, it was functioning as a watering place by the 1790s. Yet decades of tourism produced no sweeping changes. Barry remained a district of ‘bathing villages’ and hamlets, not a developed urban resort. As such, its history challenges us to rethink the category of ‘seaside resort’ and forces us to re-evaluate Wales’s contribution to British coastal tourism in the ‘long nineteenth century’. It also underlines the importance of visitor agency; powerful landowners shaped much of the Island’s development but, ultimately, it was the working-class visitors who turned it into south Wales’s most beloved tripper resort.

The differing responses to the war within Wales are explored in this book, which charts how the pacifist tradition of nineteenth-century Welsh Nonconformity was quickly overturned. The two main elements of the anti-war movement are analysed in depth: the pacifist religious opposition, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and the Nonconformist dissidents who were particularly influential in north and west Wales; and the political opposition concentrated in the Independent Labour Party and among the radical left within the South Wales Miners’ Federation.
