Download or read book Bright Wings written by Billy Collins and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this beautiful collection of poems and paintings, Billy Collins, former U.S. poet laureate, joins with David Allen Sibley, America's foremost bird illustrator, to celebrate the winged creatures that have inspired so many poets to sing for centuries. From Catullus and Chaucer to Robert Browning and James Wright, poets have long treated birds as powerful metaphors for beauty, escape, transcendence, and divine expression. Here, in this substantial anthology, more than one hundred contemporary and classic poems are paired with close to sixty original, ornithologically precise illustrations. Part poetry collection, part field guide, part art book, Bright Wings presents verbal and visual interpretations of the natural world and reminds us of our intimate connection to the "bright wings" around us. Each in their own way, these poems and pictures honor the enchanting creatures that have been, and continue to be, longtime collaborators with the poet's and painter's art. Poet and bird pairings include: Wallace Stevens and the Blackbird; Emily Dickinson and the Robin; Marianne Moore and the Frigate Pelican; Thomas Hardy and the Goldfinch; Sylvia Plath and the Pheasant; John Updike and the Seagull; Walt Whitman and the Eagle; Billy Collins and the Sparrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Followers of Damyas writing realize that she is good at penetrating the readers depth with a big disclosure and she is very good at using semantic directors to guide her meanings toward a deep destination with artistic and aesthetic elements. Expressive narrative poetry, which Damya uses, offers a good free area for expressive disclosure. In a short sentence, expressive narrative prose poetry means a narrative superficial structure of a deep poetic structure. An Arabian writers group writes the prose poetry with a superficial narrative structure and deep poetic structure, so the text is composed of feelings instead of meaning and symbols and is a very close step from abstract poetry.

Book Synopsis The Missions of Gulls by : TED. LAMB

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ted Lamb's bird poetry will delight everyone who loves the natural world. Personal recollections include a magical meeting with migrating nightingales while hitch-hiking through France and 'owly singalongs' enjoyed on dark nights. Swans are among his favorite birds... Swan Majesty Nothing so glorious as swans in flight a vision heard as much as seen as every long, strong quill is bent to drive majestic shapes of purest white. Nothing so wonderful as swans a-sail with wings upstretched and scooping air and heads held high and proud to scud along black waters in a gale. Nothing so at peace as swans asleep heads under wings and rocking gently on the waves dreaming of we know not what while all extremities are tucked-in neat. In this edition also there are more of Ted's poems, including an ill-fated intergalactic love affair, 'The Ballad of Sally Stardust', and a collection titled 'Other Space Junk' that introduces some out-of-this-world concepts such as the true universality of the universal wrench. From 'Sally Stardust' Sally stole a cruiser from the deep space park-lot Blasted from the shadows of the moon's dark side Bad-fingered the cop-ships Lined up a star chart Crashed the screaming engines into hyperdrive. Some say Sally's lover was a gambler and a killer Others just a victim, framed and without vice Sally only knew him As a lucked-out loner Knew she had to follow in his endless flight. Now she roams the space lanes, singing like an angel Making a living while she keeps her hopes alive She will never stay much longer than an eye-blink Moving on as swiftly as she first arrived. Always just behind her lurk the silent watchers Hoping she will lead them where her man can't hide She can feel their presence Dark and cold and evil Knows she has to shake them or her sweetheart dies. When a shooting star flares brightly in the twilight, Mothers tell their children not to be afraid, "See, it's Sally Stardust Poor, lost Sally Stardust Doomed to keep on searching til the end of days." Someday you may see her, listen to her sweet voice When you break your journey in some far rest bay You will know it's Sally, eyes so deep with sadness But before the spell ends she'll be on her way.

Book Synopsis Gulf and Other Poems by : Derek Walcott
Download or read book Gulf and Other Poems written by Derek Walcott and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As his title suggests, Derek Walcott's new poems--while making beautiful use of Caribbean imagery--are concerned with themes of isolation and the achievement of identity through loneliness. When it was published in England in 1969, The Gulf was awarded the Cholmondeley prize for poetry. As the London Times wrote, "His new collection is as noble and stern and grand as Milton...Walcott writes with a tropical glory of images; handles his huge pyrotechnic vocabulary with iron-discipline , verve and nerve...His glittering intelligence and luxurious command of sensation fuse in a mastery of images which burst in the brain like balls of phosphorescent fire." The subject of the title poem is the alienation and isolation of an America where filling-station signs proclaim the Gulf, an air, heavy with gas sickens the state, from Newark to New Orleans. The central figure in the Caribbean poems is a Robinson Crusoe-like castaway, who "learns again the self-creating peace of islands."
