I have attempted to omit all matter which can be omitted without interfering with my main purpose. Thus I have passed by all questions of detail connected with the Psychology of the Special Senses. My endeavour has been to present only what is essential to insight into the constitution of our mental life as a whole. The work is a new one. It is not an abridgment of my Manual of Psychology. Even where the matter presented is substantially the same, the mode of presentation is different. The two books have no more in common than is inevitable in works on the same subject by the same person. In some respects the Groundwork is in my own opinion an improvement on the Manual, because, since the Manual was written, my own views on certain questions have become more clear and precise. One distinctive feature of the present work is the free use which it makes of material derived from observation of young children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Groundwork of Science a Study of Epistemology E have again and again been impressed by the ready disposition of men whose views and Opinions are most opposed, to agree in accepting as certain, things which are by no means evident, and in adopting conclusions as proved, which are by no means the only consequences that follow from conceded premisses. Our great object, there fore, in this little volume, is to represent nothing as certain which does not appear to us to be really evident, and yet not to shrink from upholding as true whatever, in our judg ment, possesses the highest conceivable evidence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Psychology In addition to the monographs which have been pour ing from the press for twenty years past, we have by this time, both in English and in German, a very large num ber of general text-books, some larger and some smaller, but all covering the ground in ways which, so far as stu dents go, are practical equivalents for each other. The main subdivisions, principles, and features of descriptive psychology are at present well made out, and writers are agreed about them. If one has read earlier books, one need not read the very newest one in order to catch up with the progress of the science. The differences in them are largely of order and emphasis, or of fondness on the authors' parts for certain phrases, or for their own modes of approach to particular questions. It is one and the same body of facts with which they all make us acquainted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: William James' The Principles of Psychology, Volume One is an epic work in the field of psychology and one of the most well known books of the discipline. James was a philosopher and psychologist who spent most of his adult life employed by Harvard University, where he developed and taught some of the most influential psychological theories of the time. The book opens with an analysis of the functions of the brain and a discussion of the scope of psychology. From there, James' focus is primarily on the localization of functions within the brain, or how specific parts of the brain act as neural centres for the human body's senses. James relies on a comparative method in which humans are compared to other animals, and the importance of instincts in shaping the actions of man are discussed in detail. The primary value in reading the work of William James is to absorb the author's ability to contextualize psychology. Much of what is known about psychology today is a direct result of the foundation laid by James. If one wants truly to understand the present, it is important to understand the past. The Principles of Psychology, Volume One is rightly considered a masterpiece. For the experienced student of psychology, this book is an absolute must-read. It is a work that begs to be meditated upon and will surely ruminate in your consciousness long after you turn the last page. A true classic. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to General Psychology The chief motives for the writing of the present book were two. The first of these was to supply a general elementary text-book which would meet the demands of the average student beginner a little more adequately than has been done hitherto. After ten years' experience in teaching a first course in Psychology, I have become convinced that the mode of attack usually followed fails to supply the student with the sort of introduction into the science of mind that will enable him, on the one hand, to connect his Psychology with every day life, and, on the other hand, to apprehend the bearings of this science upon Philosophy, Education, Sociology and Biology. It has been my experience that so much time was consumed in the study of the nervous system, and of the experimental data of sensation and percep tion, that in a brief course no adequate considera tion could be given to mind as a whole, and to the important topics of personality and character. To introduce a student to the study of Psychology is one thing, and no doubt the detailed study of psychophysiological data, with their appropriate laboratory exercises, is a most satisfactory means to this end. But the function of Psychology in an undergraduate college course is another thing, and is not purely departmental. The average student does not go beyond the first brief course. He does, however, frequently elect further work in Philosophy and Education, Sociology and Biol ogy. In coming to these subjects he should bring with him psychological conceptions of a general sort that will be useful to him. It is the consciousness of this need which has supplied the first motive for this book. How well I may have succeeded, it is beyond me to say. Many defects will doubtless be apparent to the critical reader. I can only hope that they may not prove serious enough to invalidate the purpose which I have had in view. The question was continually pressing in the treatment of each topic: How much and how little should be said? In my endeavor to keep the book within such limits as would make it practicable to cover the ground completely in a one-term course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Psychology The text-book, however, is a necessary yet a subsidiary adjunct to the study of any science. It is useful only as it stimulates, directs, verifies and supplements the indi vidual observation of the reader. This book has been written, accordingly, with the constant purpose of leading students to the independent and careful study of their own consciousness. It is highly desirable that such intro spective study should be supplemented by experiments. Performed by the student under direction, and that this experimental introspection should precede, instead of fol lowing, the study of every division of the text. Detailed references are given, at appropriate points, to the two English manuals of experimental psychology. The general reader who may open this volume should be warned against certain technical chapters. He will do well to skim Part I., omitting entirely Chapters VII. And VIII.; and he should especially devote himself to Part II., from which, however, he may drop out Chapters XIII XVIII., and XIX. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Normal and Abnormal Psychology In this volume I made an attempt to formulate the fundamental assumptions and main principles that un derlie normal and abnormal psychology. Every science, mathematical, physical or biological, has its postulates as the foundation of its structure. Psychology as a science has also its own assumptions which have to be clearly formulated. The object of the first part of this volume is the unravelling of the principal concepts and hypotheses which form the basis of the study of men tal phenomena. All through the domain of the sciences there is a vast movement for the search of fundamental concepts and for the close investigation of such concepts. Even such an exact science as mathematics has felt this spirit of examination of its fundamental assumptions, axioms, and postulates. Men like Lobatchevsky, Bolyai, Rie man and others have given the start and a number of mathematicians have recently followed in their foot steps, with the result of getting a wider horizon and of opening unknown regions. The same we find in the case of physical sciences, such as physics, mechanics and chemistry. Mach, Poincare, Ostwald, Pearson and others have contributed to this spirit of investigation in the domain of physical sciences. This spirit of inquiry has become of late specially intensified by the revolu tionary discoveries of radio-active bodies.
