Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Green Algae of North America Second West, 1916, contains a system of classification of all the green algae, with characters of genera and higher divisions; it differs considerably in details from previous classifications. Attention has been given to it in cases where genera not before known in North America are now reported, but no attempt has been made to rearrange genera already known here. In gen eral, specific names have not been changed from those used in 1909 and 1912, when the change was due to the discovery of an older name than the one hitherto prevailing; nor has record been made of extensions of range. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Green Algae of North America Under each species will be found a concise description, with a record of the localities in which it has been found; if in the United States, the State is given, but seldom any more exact location. Reference is given to the original publication of the binomial, also to some good plate or figure; where there has been distributed in some set of exsiccatae a specimen that can be identified with the species in question, reference is made to this; by preference use is made of the Phycotheca Boreali Americana of Collins, Holden Setchell, as being at once the fullest for American algae, and the most accessible for Ameri can students. References are also given to three standard works Harvey, 1852, Farlow, 1881, and Wolle., 1887. Where the basis of treatment of any family or genus has been the monograph of any author, reference is made to such monograph under each species. In special cases other references have seemed desirable, and have been made. In the plates there will be found at least one figure for each genus; in most cases these are taken from standard works, often from the original description of the Species represented. Where a choice had to be made of the species to be represented, in some cases a type was selected other than the one most famil iar to American students in the usual text books. Book excerpt: Freshwater Algae of North America: Ecology and Classification, Second Edition is an authoritative and practical treatise on the classification, biodiversity, and ecology of all known genera of freshwater algae from North America. The book provides essential taxonomic and ecological information about one of the most diverse and ubiquitous groups of organisms on earth. This single volume brings together experts on all the groups of algae that occur in fresh waters (also soils, snow, and extreme inland environments). In the decade since the first edition, there has been an explosion of new information on the classification, ecology, and biogeography of many groups of algae, with the use of molecular techniques and renewed interest in biological diversity. Accordingly, this new edition covers updated classification information of most algal groups and the reassignment of many genera and species, as well as new research on harmful algal blooms. Extensive and complete Describes every genus of freshwater algae known from North America, with an analytical dichotomous key, descriptions of diagnostic features, and at least one image of every genus. Full-color images throughout provide superb visual examples of freshwater algae Updated Environmental Issues and Classifications, including new information on harmful algal blooms (HAB) Fully revised introductory chapters, including new topics on biodiversity, and taste and odor problems Updated to reflect the rapid advances in algal classification and taxonomy due to the widespread use of DNA technologies

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marine Algae of New England For the ptu'pose of examining the algie of the coast, I have visited Eastport, Portland, Cape Ann, Wood's Holl, Mass, where I passed two summers with the Commission, Newport, Noank, Oonn., and Green port, L. 1. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make any excursions during the winter months, except to the coast near Boston, at Nahant and hmrblehead, and my knowledge of the winter species is derived from specimens sent by correspondents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lichens are a unique form of plant life, the product of a symbiotic association between an alga and a fungus. The beauty and importance of lichens have long been overlooked, despite their abundance and diversity in most parts of North America and elsewhere in the world. This stunning book--the first accessible and authoritative guidebook to lichens of the North American continent--fills the gap, presenting superb color photographs, descriptions, distribution maps, and keys for identifying the most common, conspicuous, or ecologically significant species. The book focuses on 805 foliose, fruticose, and crustose lichens (the latter rarely included in popular guidebooks) and presents information on another 700 species in the keys or notes; special attention is given to species endemic to North America. A comprehensive introduction discusses the biology, structure, uses, and ecological significance of lichens and is illustrated with 90 additional color photos and many line drawings. English names are provided for most species, and the book also includes a glossary that explains technical terms. This visually rich and informative book will open the eyes of nature lovers everywhere to the fascinating world of lichens.

Provides also information on taxonomy of river-inhabiting algal groups, including phylogeny, distribution, collection, preservation and description of the most representative genera of algae in river benthic algal communities. The book also approaches the ecology of river algae not to mention the ecological factors influencing abundance, distribution and diversity of river benthic algal communities and their use as bio-indicators, providing an up-to-date information on taxonomy, ecology, methodology and uses, and a great source of research to everyone interested in freshwater algae, limnology, water quality assessment and biodiversity in river ecosystems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marine Algae of New England: And Adjacent Coast This report is intended, with the exception of the Diatombs, to include all the marine species at present known to occur on the coast of the United States from New Jersey to Eastport, Me., and a few species are mentioned which, although they have not yet been found within our limits. Are nevertheless to be expected from the fact that they occur on the neighboring coast of the British provinces. In preparing the report I have attempted to present, in a compact and more or less popular form, a description of the different orders and species of sea-weeds, so that persons who frequent the coast of New England, and especially those in the service of the Fish Commission, may have at hand the means of determining the forms found in our waters. The descriptive portion of the report is preceded by a short account of the general structure and classification of sea-weeds, which is necessary in the present case, because there is no generally accessible book in the English language which gives a good account of the modern views of the classification and structure of algae.
