Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 58 In Issue 58 of the Baba Indaba Children's Stories, Baba Indaba narrates the Burmese tale of the Greedy King. Once a greedy king does an act of kindness to a beggar and is later granted one wish. But will his wish be to help humanity or help himself. This story has parallels in the West. It is believed that folklore and tales are believed to have originated in India and made their way overland along the Silk and Spice routes and through Central Asia before arriving in Europe. Even so, this does not cover all folklore from all four corners of the world. Indeed folklore, legends and myths from Africa, Australia, Polynesia, and some from Asia too, are altogether quite different and seem to have originated on the whole from separate reservoirs of lore, legend and culture. This book also has a "Where in the World - Look it Up" section, where young readers are challenged to look up a place on a map somewhere in the world. The place, town or city is relevant to the story, on map. HINT - use Google maps. Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Baba Indaba translates as "Father of Stories".ÿ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21 colourful Burmese folk tales in this volume have been retold in English by teachers from the Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Education High School, Mandalay, Myanmar, formerly Burma. Accompanying the stories are 22 illustrations created by their young pupils. Herein you will find stories like THE CROW IS AS PROUD AS THE PEACOCK , THE THREE SISTERS, THE BLIND BOY, SHIN MWE LON AND MIN NANDA, THE GREEDY KING, A DISRESPECTFUL DAUGHTER and many more. Herein you will find stories like The Crow Is As Proud As The Peacock , The Three Sisters, The Blind Boy, Shin Mwe Lon And Min Nanda, The Greedy King, A Disrespectful Daughter and many more. As with most folk tales with Eastern origins, the stories have deeper meanings hidden beneath what, on the surface, may appear to be a simple story. The morals in these Burmese tales often reoccur in the tales from other cultures’. Such universal themes include traditional family values and respect, still very much to the fore in a country that to a great extent has stood still in time. 55% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Education High School, Mandalay to assist with teaching materials. These funds will assist the inspired school founders, Ven. U Nayaka and Ven. U Jotika, who, to date, have helped many underprivileged children benefit from a high standard of education.

Herein you will find stories like Charan, The Story Of Chang To-Ryong, A Story Of The Fox, Cheung Puk-Chang, The Seer, Yun Se-Pyong, The Wizard, The Wild-Cat Woman and many, many more. These stories have their roots in the equally ancient eastern religions of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism and have been translated from an old manuscript of Korean Folklore and translated by James S. Gale in 1912. Some are what many call the Absurdities of Asia, some are gruesome and unlovely. The thirteen short stories by Yi Ryuk are taken from a reprint of old Korean writings issued in 1911. Three anonymous stories are also added, “The Geomancer,” “Im, the Hunter,” and “The Man who lost his Legs,” Korea’s very own Sinbad. So sit back and relax with a cup of something hot and enjoy these very unique tales from the Korean Peninsula.

This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 48 Folk-Tales in this book hail from the South East Asian land-locked country of Laos. Herein are stories like The Enchanted Mountain, The Spirit-Guarded Cave, The Monkeys and the Crabs, The Origin of Lightning (a tale which seems to be endemic amongst all the world’s cultures,) The Faithful Husband, The Cheating Priest and many more children’s stories which cover Romance and Tragedy, Temples and Priests, Moderation and Greed, Parables and Proverbs and The Wonders of Wisdom. There is also a small collection of Stories which went Astray. When these were first gathered by Katherine Neville Fleeson, the country was a part of the kingdom of Siam, and are uniquely South East Asian in their charm and complete novelty. Until the translator of this volume collected these stories, they were even unwritten, with a single exception which was found in an ancient Laos manuscript. They are, and have been, orally preserved in the provinces which constitute the Laos country, just as they have been handed down from generation to generation, with slight variations in words or incidents. In older times, village elders would tell the stories at their merrymakings around the camp-fires and within their primitive houses, to amuse and instruct the youth and children. However, with the advent of the electronic age, this tradition is being lost, and the more the pity for it. To the Scholar, who is a student of the world's Folk-Lore, you may be assured that you have here a small window in history with the tales of Laos, unobscured, just as they were told when this volume was published in 1899.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Shan stories have been taken from the great mass of unwritten lore that is to the boys and girls of the Shan mountain country of Burma what "Rapunzel", “Snow White” and "Cinderella" are to Western children. Herein you will find the illustrated stories of How Boh Han Me Got His Title, Story Of The Princess Nang Kam Ung, How The Hare Deceived The Tiger, How The World Was Created, How The King Of Pagan Caught The Thief and many more. In Shan folk-lore the hero does not "marry and live happy ever after," but he becomes the king of the country, which, we guess, is a pretty good substitute. These stories are purely native, with as little mixture of Western ideas as it was possible to give them in dressing them in their garment of English words. They will give a better insight into what the native of Burma really is. As such, our hope is they will be found to be more interesting to children and the avid folklorist alike. A percentage of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to the Phaung Daw Oo Monastic Education High School, Mandalay, Myanmar. Author Write Up: William C Griggs is the compiler of “Shan Folklore from the Hill and Water Country”. Griggs was a Missionary-Doctor based at the American Baptist Shan Mission House, in Bhamo, Burma over a century ago. It was not unusual for Asian people to be more open and sharing with doctors than with bureaucrats and officials, who were viewed more with suspicion than favour. Indeed at about the same time Dr. A. L. Shelton, also a missionary-doctor, gathered similar stories from the time he spent treating the Tibetan people of the Himalyas. Missionary societies then published these folk stories as a way of raising funds to support their societies missionary work abroad.

Book excerpt: Here is a treasury of favorite and little known tales from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, Australia, and Oceania, gracefully retold and accompanied by fascinating, detailed information of their historic and cultural backgrounds. The introduction provides an informative overview of folklore, its purpose in world cultures and in contemporary society and popular culture. Following this, the main sections of the book are arranged by tale type, covering wonder tales, hero tales, tales of kindness repaid and hope and redemption, and finally tales of fools and wise people. Each section begins by comparing the tales cross-culturally, explaining similarities and differences in the folkloric narratives. Tales from diverse cultures are then presented, introduced, and retold in a highly readable fashion.

This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Laurence Housman, retells 6 of the most popular tales from 1001 Arabian Nights. While there are only 6 tales in this volume, they are brought to life with 50 lavishly illustrated images by the famous illustrator Edmund Dulac. The six tales are: The Fisherman And The Genie The Story Of The King Of The Ebony Isles Ali Baba And The Forty Thieves The Story Of The Magic Horse The Story Of The Wicked Half-Brothers The Story Of The Princess Of Deryabar All these tales are narrated by Scheherazadè, the heroine of the Thousand and one Nights. She ranks among the great story-tellers of the world and gives a distinctly Arabian flavour and feel to the stories. In all these tales something magical and wonderful occurs. Sometimes it is a talking donkey, an evil witch or a corrupt Vizier. Whenever evil raises its head, a hero sallies forth to save the day. As per usual evil is vanquished and the hero and his princess ride off into the sunset. While the plot is always the familiar, the characters and the setting are not making the stories all the more interesting and captivating for young minds. NOTE: The Princess of Deryabar featured in “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958). The role was played by Kathryn Grant while Sinbad was played by Kerwin Matthews. It is believed that this volume and other illustrations by Dulac were directly responsible for the making of the film. Book excerpt: Tales of Giants from Brazil is Elsie Spicer Eells’ second collection of twelve, illustrated Brazillian stories. In this volume you will find unique stories with unfamiliar titles. Stories like The Princess Of The Springs, The Fountain Of Giant Land, The Little Sister Of The Giants, The Giant’s Pupil plus eight more. When one thinks of giants in folklore, South America is not usually the region of the world that first comes to mind. We are more familiar with tales of giants in the fairy tales and folklore of the West. So, to have twelve absolutely unique stories of giants from Brazil in one volume is extra-special. For this we have Elsie Spicer-Eells to thank. As Eells puts it, “Brazil is the land of giant fruits and giant flowers. Of course it is the land of giant stories too.” It is safe to stay that storytelling was alive and well in Central and South America when the Portuguese arrived in circa AD1500. It would also be safe to say that the Portuguese brought their folk tales along with their trade. Therefore it does not take a leap of the imagination to conclude that at some point the folklore from these two cultures became entwined to form new stories – much like the mixing of the dark, almost black, waters of the Rio Negro and the brown, lighter, muddy waters of the Rio Solimoes just north of the City of Manaus. It is often claimed that this is where the Amazon River truly starts. So, find a comfy chair, sit back with a hot toddy, and enjoy these twelve unique and authentic folk stories for children.

She is young and beautiful, and falls in love with Artegal upon first seeing his face in her father's magic mirror. Though there is no interaction with him, she falls in love with him, and travels, dressed as a knight and accompanied by her nurse, Glauce, in search of her beloved Artegal. She carries an enchanted spear that allows her to defeat every Knight she encounters. After many adventures, it is only at the end of her quest Britomart is challenged by two knights who both seek to avenge their previous defeat at the hand of the unknown “Knight with the Ebony Spear”, who is in reality Britomart. Both challenge, but again are unseated by Britomart. In his defeat the beautiful face of Sir Artegal is revealed and her mind at once recalls the day she first saw his face in her father’s enchanted mirror. Only then does her courage began to falter, and her spirit grow tame, so that she softly withdraws her uplifted hand. Sir Scudamore, who has been observing the joust is glad at heart and exclaims with jest, "Truly, Sir Artegal, I rejoice to see you bow so low, and that you have lived to become a lady's thrall!" When Britomart hears the name of Artegal, her heart leaps and trembles with joy. She flushes deeply, and tries to hide her agitation by feigning anger. But all is put right and Britomart and Artegal fall deeply in love and can’t bear to be parted. But a happy ending is not yet in sight as Sir Artegal is on a quest and takes his leave. Britomart is upset and can hardly bear to be parted. Britomart then joins Sir Scudamour on his quest to find his Lady Amoret and they return to where Britomart had last seen her.

Book excerpt: Kwasi Kwarteng is the child of parents whose lives were shaped as subjects of the British Empire, first in their native Ghana, then as British immigrants. He brings a unique perspective and impeccable academic credentials to a narrative history of the British Empire, one that avoids sweeping judgmental condemnation and instead sees the Empire for what it was: a series of local fiefdoms administered in varying degrees of competence or brutality by a cast of characters as outsized and eccentric as anything conjured by Gilbert and Sullivan. The truth, as Kwarteng reveals, is that there was no such thing as a model for imperial administration; instead, appointees were schooled in quirky, independent-minded individuality. As a result the Empire was the product not of a grand idea but of often chaotic individual improvisation. The idiosyncrasies of viceroys and soldier-diplomats who ran the colonial enterprise continues to impact the world, from Kashmir to Sudan, Baghdad to Hong Kong.

Book excerpt: collected and retold by Edna Ledgard The people of Burma/Myanmar call it Shwe Pyidaw, the Golden Land, their fertile valley cradled in a horseshoe of mountains. When squabbling Western nations vied for control of the newly-mapped country a century ago, the local population had already lived in the mountainous land for over a millenium. Throughout those centuries, the legends and tales rooted in animist religions created a rich tapestry of spirits that underlie the later arrival of Buddhism. "Nat" spirits, dragons, winged lion-dogs, ogres, mythical galon birds, sorceresses and many more populated the land. This volume brings together 25 of the most-loved of these folk tales.

Book excerpt: ARCHIMAGO, the wicked magician (whose other name you may remember was Hypocrisy,) who had worked such mischief to Una and the Red Cross Knight, was very angry when he found that in the end all his evil wiles were defeated, and that the Knight and the lady were happily betrothed. He would willingly have brought more trouble on them, but he was powerless to do any harm to Una, for she was now safely restored to her own kingdom, and living in the care of her father and mother. He therefore directed all his spite against the Knight, who had once more to set forth on his adventures, as he had promised Queen Gloriana to serve her faithfully for six years. At the end of that time he hoped to return and marry Una, and the King, her father, had made him heir to the throne. It happened, one day, that the enchanter saw marching to meet him a noble knight. The stranger was clad in shining armour and rode a splendid war-horse; his bearing was very stately, and his face, although calm and beautiful, was so stern and noble that all his friends loved him and his foes feared him. He was one of the chief knights of Queen Gloriana's court, a man of great honour and power in his native land. His name was Sir Guyon. Just as the Red Cross Knight was known as the Champion of Holiness, so Sir Guyon was known as the Knight of Temperance. Stopping Sir Guyon, this time he had a fresh story to tell, which, of course, was perfectly false. He implored Sir Guyon to come to the help of a beautiful maiden, cruelly ill-treated by a rough knight, who had cut off her golden locks, and threatened to kill her with his sharp sword. "What!" cried Sir Guyon, his gentle nature roused to indignation, "is the man still alive who could do such a deed?" "He is alive, and boasts of it," said wicked Hypocrisy. "Nor has any other knight yet punished him for it." "Take me to him at once," said Sir Guyon. "That I can easily do," said Archimago. "I will show you where he is," and he hurried off in high glee, because he thought that at last he had found a way of revenging himself on the Red Cross Knight, and so begins the adventures of Sir Guyon.
