Wells was, first and foremost, a master story-teller whose narratives still hold the attention of thousands of readers year after year. Remarkably skillful at balancing imaginary situations with backgrounds and details that are almost scientifically specific, Wells holds - and deserves - the title, "Father of modern science fiction." The seven novels included (in this single volume in their complete and unabridged texts) are his finest achievements. Several of them have already attained reputations as classic stories, not only of their special genre but of English literature in general. All of them are rewarding entertainments.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Time Machine + The Invisible Man + The War of the Worlds (3 Unabridged Science Fiction Classics)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. H.G. Wells is an English author best known as a sci-fi writer, though he was also a prolific writer in many other genres, including contemporary novels, history, politics and social commentary, and even writing text books and rules for war games. The first great novel to imagine time travel, The Time Machine (1895) follows its scientist narrator on an incredible journey that takes him finally to Earth's last moments—and perhaps his own. The scientist who discovers how to transform himself in The Invisible Man (1897) will also discover, too late, that he has become unmoored from society and from his own sanity. The War of the Worlds (1898)—the seminal masterpiece of alien invasion adapted by Orson Welles for his notorious 1938 radio drama, and subsequently by several filmmakers—imagines a fierce race of Martians who devastate Earth and feed on their human victims while their voracious vegetation, the red weed, spreads over the ruined planet...

This book was released on 2013-12-22 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This premium quality volume includes the complete text of two of H. G. Wells' science fiction classics -- The War of the Worlds and The First Men in the Moon -- selected for this collection because of their enduring influence on the science fiction genre. This freshly edited and newly typeset edition features a large 7.44"x9.69 page size and is printed on heavyweight bright white paper with a fully laminated cover featuring an original full color design. Also included in this volume are page headers and an introductory biographical sketch discussing Wells' life, work and continuing literary significance. The two tales included in this volume share the common theme of humanity coming into conflict with strange alien societies, the invasion of the earth by hostile Martians in The War of the Worlds, and the encounter between human explorers and the native inhabitants in The First Men in the Moon. A common theme in the science fiction genre, these tales by Wells represent two of the earliest and most influential such stories. A matching volume, The Best of H.G. Wells, Volume II: The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau ISBN-13: 978-1494767792, ISBN-10: 1494767791, is also available. Herbert George Wells (1866–1946), was born to shopkeepers who had previously been employed as domestic servants. When an injury ended his father's income as a professional cricketer, Wells' parents, on the brink of poverty, apprenticed him to a draper, but he was dismissed after a short time and subsequently became a "pupil-teacher" in a system where older students helped teach younger students. Despite having little formal education, Wells, a voracious reader, won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in London where he completed courses in biology and physics, but left the school in 1887 after failing geology and losing his scholarship. Best known today for his science fiction works, Wells' first published book was a biology textbook in 1893. With the publication of The Time Machine in 1895 Wells began a long and successful writing career. The next several years saw the publication of The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The First Men in the Moon and many other works ranging from humorous social commentary novels to non-fiction and political polemics. In 1920, he published his landmark Outline of History, which became the model for "outline" texts in a variety of disciplines. Over time Wells' works became increasingly political, contentious and argumentative and only his early science fiction novels are widely read today. Those novels provide insights into the science and society of Wells' day and are interesting for their prediction of future events and scientific developments. Wells' science fiction tales are also very entertaining and easy to read. Many of his story elements, like time travel, hostile aliens, mutant creatures and space travel, became common themes in science fiction In literary circles, Wells' comic novels, virtually unknown to casual readers of today, are considered outstanding examples of 20th century British literature, and Wells' work is regarded as one of the best examples of pre-World War I liberal optimism. Yet Wells' social optimism is tempered, particularly in his science fiction works, and he clearly shares the sense of dread of science and technology gone out-of-control that runs through Victorian and post-Victorian British thought, with mad scientists and mass destruction seemingly lying in wait for unwary humanity. Wells is often referred to as one of "The Fathers of Science Fiction," and "science fiction" today might look very different without Wells' contributions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the UBC Medal for Biography and shortlisted for the Drainie-Taylor Biography Prize. The prolific novelist and social prophet H.G. Wells had a way with words, and usually he had his way with women. That is, until he encountered the feisty Toronto spinster Florence Deeks. In 1925 Miss Deeks launched a $500,000 lawsuit against Wells, claiming that in an act of "literary piracy," Wells had somehow come to use her manuscript history of the world in the writing of his international bestseller The Outline of History , a work still in print today. Thus began one of the most sensational and extraordinary cases in Anglo-Canadian publishing and legal history. In this riveting literary whodunit, A.B. McKillop unfolds the parallel stories of two Edwardian figures and the ambition to capture the sweep of history that possessed them both: H.G. Wells was the celebrated writer of autobiographical fiction and futuristic fantasy who, at the end of the Great War, preached the need for a global world order. Florence Deeks was a modest teacher and amateur student of history who intended to correct traditional scholarship's neglect by writing an account of civilization that stressed the contributions of women. Her manuscript was submitted to the venerable Macmillan Company in Canada but was rejected and never published. Wells's opus, completed in an astonishingly short period, was released by the same firm in North America the year following. As the mystery deepens and new evidence is revealed, it seems that the verdict of the courts in Deeks vs Wells may not be that of history. The cast of characters is as intriguing as it is wide in Canada, the United States, and England: renowned publishers and editors, eminent lawyers and judges, leading journalists and all-seeing office secretaries. Not all, it turns out, merited their reputations. Above all, the tale embraces the lives of the philandering Mr. Wells, his wife, and his mistresses, and the scarcely noted Miss Florence Deeks, her family, her life's work, and her search for justice.
