Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Licia Fiol-Matta traces the careers of four iconic Puerto Rican singers—Myrta Silva, Ruth Fernández, Ernestina Reyes, and Lucecita Benítez—to explore how their voices and performance style transform the possibilities for comprehending the figure of the woman singer. Fiol-Matta shows how these musicians, despite seemingly intractable demands to represent gender norms, exercised their artistic and political agency by challenging expectations of how they should look, sound, and act. Fiol-Matta also breaks with conceptualizations of the female pop voice as spontaneous and intuitive, interrogating the notion of "the great woman singer" to deploy her concept of the "thinking voice"—an event of music, voice, and listening that rewrites dominant narratives. Anchored in the work of Lacan, Foucault, and others, Fiol-Matta's theorization of voice and gender in The Great Woman Singer makes accessible the singing voice's conceptual dimensions while revealing a dynamic archive of Puerto Rican and Latin American popular music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sounding Latin America studies popular music making by immigrants from Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean in the United States. It focuses on the points of contact and divergence in music making that result from competing values informed by how modernity is experienced across the Americas: the relation of language to letters; cosmopolitanism; racial categories and adjacent traditions and notions of the past; citizenship and migrancy; globalization and belonging. First study of the intra-hemispheric, linked but divergent relations of "Latin" music to the US and Latin America Proposes a comparative method for understanding the relations of immigrants to minority groups in the US with music making as the center Book places aurality ("intersensory, affective, cognitive, discursive, material, perceptual, and rhetorical network") as central operation in the constitution of "music.""--

Book excerpt: Whitney Houston is a show-business phenomenon and one of Hollywood's most sought-after black actresses. Here is the first-ever behind-the-scenes book about Whitney. Good Girl, Bad Girl is written by Kevin Ammons, who spent a great deal of time with Whitney since his girlfriend, Regina Brown, was Whitney's publicist. During his four-year affair with Brown, Ammons saw Whitney at her bitchiest, and he found that beneath her glamorous image lies a troubled woman who let success go to her head. The book travels behind closed doors to reveal - Why Whitney really married Bobby Brown - Why her close childhood friend, Robyn Crawford, threatened suicide - Why Kevin Costner, Oprah Winfrey, and Madonna are on her hate list - Why Whitney refuses to heed doctor's warnings that she will ruin her voice - The truth behind her affairs with Eddie Murphy and Robert De Niro. Like Whitney Houston's life and career, this remarkable inside story sizzles.

Book excerpt: "I mean, what is a woman? I assure you, I do not know. I do not believe that you know. I do not believe that anybody can know until she has expressed herself in all the arts and professions open to human skill."--Virginia Woolf, Professions for Women Writing The Woman Artist is a collection of essays that explores the ways in which women writers portray women painters, sculptors, writers, and performers. Surveying the works of a variety of women writers--from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from different ethnic, national , racial, and economic backgrounds--this book treats their revisions of the Künstlerroman and their perceptions of the relationships between muse, artist, and audience in other genres. Suzanne W. ]ones and her collaborators seek to understand how representations of women artists and their poetics and politics are mediated by social and historical factors, including literary movements and theories of language. In doing so, they make an important contribution to the field of feminist scholarship, and generate new ways of understanding how the dynamics of creativity intersect with the dynamics of gender. Contributors to the volume are Ann Ardis, Alison Booth , Kathleen Brogan, Lynda Bundtzen, Pamela Caughie, Mary DeShazer, Linda Dittmar, Josephine Donovan, Susan Stanford Friedman , Gayle Greene, Linda Hunt, Katherine Kearns, Holly Laird, Estella Lauter, Z. Nelly Martinez, Jane Atteridge Rose, Margaret Diane Stetz, Renate Voris, and Mara Witzling. Writing The Woman Artist is a valuable new resource for scholars and students working in the fields of European and American literature and women's studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Singer-Songwriter in Europe is the first book to explore and compare the multifaceted discourses and practices of this figure within and across linguistic spaces in Europe and in dialogue with spaces beyond continental borders. The concept of the singer-songwriter is significant and much-debated for a variety of reasons. Many such musicians possess large and zealous followings, their output often esteemed politically and usually held up as the nearest popular music gets to high art, such facets often yielding sizeable economic benefits. Yet this figure, per se, has been the object of scant critical discussion, with individual practitioners celebrated for their isolated achievements instead. In response to this lack of critical knowledge, this volume identifies and interrogates the musical, linguistic, social and ideological elements that configure the singer-songwriter and its various equivalents in Europe, such as the French auteur-compositeur-interprète and the Italian cantautore, since the late 1940s. Particular attention is paid to the emergence of this figure in the post-war period, how and why its contours have changed over time and space subsequently, cross-cultural influences, and the transformative agency of this figure as regards party and identity politics in lyrics and music, often by means of individual case studies. The book's polycentric approach endeavours to redress the hitherto Anglophone bias in scholarship on the singer-songwriter in the English-speaking world, drawing on the knowledge of scholars from across Europe and from a variety of academic disciplines, including modern language studies, musicology, sociology, literary studies and history.
