He was an investigative reporter, first working with the New York Sun. He later joined McClure's Magazine, which was famous for their muckraking works by esteemed reporters like Ida Tarbell and Lincoln Steffens. The collection of these articles had a significant impact on society, as it helped lead to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906. Adams was a prolific writer. In addition to investigative journalism, he also wrote biographies, historical works, and fiction, including titillating novels under the pseudonym Warner Fabian, typically featuring stories of young women during the Jazz Age. Many of his writings went on to become adapted for film, including Wandering Fires, Men in Her Life, and The Gorgeous Hussy.
