Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grateful Sacrifice: A Thanksgiving Sermon, Preached in Emmanuel Church, Baltimore, Nov; 24, 1864 We are new learning in sorrow the lessons so poorly studied in our joy. By weal or by woe they must be studied and must be learned. And herein, moreover, is the balance of justice to the aggregate sin of the race; the temporal judgments decreed and visited upon the nations, foreshadowing faintly but fairly the eternal judgment upon those human units of which the nations are made up. To the spectator, whether Patriot or Christian, gazing upon the enacted drama of our national life, the scene has shifted. The jocund landscape and the sweet-piped roundelay, the freighted argosies and harvest - laden wains, give place to the sulphurous canopy and the steed-trampled plain, long lines Of embattled men and the frowning front of bristling bastions. Peace and thrift make way for war and prodigality. Yes, the scene is changed. The régime is changed. The men have changed. The ideas have changed. The temper of the nation is changed. All is changed save the superintending Providence of the un changing Ruler and Director of all. The pulse of the people beats quicker. The common breast is heaving high with novel emo tions. The common brain is busied with daring speculation, and braced with a Crusader-like determination. Now, that such potent ingredients are thrown into the caldron of popular im pulse and action, - now, that the leash is loosed from the dogs of war, and no longer held in hand, - now, that we are whirling onward in such a swollen and angry tide, - now, that we are involved in events as morally important as they are politically grand and significant, what is left us but to lift up our feeble hands, our hopeful hearts, and appeal to God with the cry of Paul, Who is sufficient for these things? What is left us but to Offer the sacrifices of righteousness and put our trust in the Lord? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Sacrifice of Praise, Herman Bavinck pastorally guides the reader through the importance of the public profession of faith. Bavinck's careful treatment includes explorations of the unifying power of a common (ecumenical) confession of faith, the blessing of the diversity of believers, and reasonable instruction for those facing persecution for publicly identifying with Christ. Theological, practical, straightforward, and devotional, The Sacrifice of Praise gives readers a fresh appreciation for the importance of confessing one's faith. This is an updated English translation of the original Dutch edition and includes a new introduction and scriptural citations. "The Sacrifice of Praise gives us the impression of a spring flower, in the midst of the sharp, cold, fierce spring winds; an Elim in the desert of daily worries, hardships, quarrels, and murmurings. May the Lord God grant that it is the forerunner of a beautiful, refreshing, abundantly fruit-bearing summer." --From a 1901 review in De Bazuin (a Dutch religious paper)

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Book excerpt: The Library of Anglo-Catholic Theology (published by John Henry Parker) was a series of 19th-century editions of theological works by writers in the Church of England, devoted as the title suggests to significant Anglo-Catholic figures. It brought back into print a number of works from the 17th century, concentrating though not exclusively on the Caroline Divines.[1] The publication of the Library, from 1841, was connected with the Oxford Movement which had begun in 1833; some of the editors, such as William John Copeland[2] and Charles Crawley were clearly identified with the Movement.

Book excerpt: Helps readers to reflect on the role of gratitude in their lives and to cultivate this virtue for their own benefit. The first author to offer a critique of gratitude through an explanation of various types of gratitude, Charles Shelton uses his skills as a clinical psychologist to present insights into the human experience of gratitude based on his own research. The exercises, strategies, and reflection questions threaded throughout the book give it a practical dimension that facilitates the reader's growth. Shelton's highly original reflection on Jesus as a grateful person lends a spiritual dimension to his work. This book will benefit individual readers as well as serve as a resource for spiritual direction workshops, spiritual formation courses, or ministry formation programs.--From publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sacrificial instructions and purity laws in Leviticus have often been seen as later or secondary additions to an originally sparse Priestly narrative. In this volume, Liane M. Feldman argues that the ritual and narrative elements of the Pentateuchal Priestly source are mutually dependent, and that the internal logic and structure of the Priestly narrative makes sense only when they are read together. Bringing together insights from the fields of ritual theory and narratology, the author argues that the ritual materials in Leviticus should be understood and analyzed as literature. At the core of her study is the assertion that these sacrificial instructions and purity laws form the backbone of the Priestly story world, and that when these materials are read within their broader narrative context, the Priestly narrative is first and foremost a story about the origins and purpose of sacrifice.
