The work on grasses may be divided into two parts: First, economic considerations on cereals and grasses, especially with reference to general structure, the seed and its germina tion and vitality, the cereal production of the state as com pared with other parts of the world, climatology of some of our most important cereals, grasses in medicines, pastures and meadows of Iowa, their chemical composition, the fungus dis eases of our cereals and grasses, and means of prevention. It is only in a few instances that we are provided with precise knowledge of the changes that occur in grasses during their development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grasses of Iowa: The Descriptive and Geographical Study of the Grasses of Iowa Several years have elapsed since Part I, Bulletin I, of the Grasses of Iowa was published. Part I, naturally, covered the general, biological, chemical and feeding problems con nected with the grasses of the state. When that work was being prepared it was thought possible to bring all this material together into one volume. As the work progressed, however, it seemed desirable to present the matter in two parts: Part I deal ing with the general biology, and Part II with the descriptive and geographical study of the grasses of Iowa. After many delays the work of printing Part II was begun early in January. I am greatly indebted to Miss Charlotte M. King for many of the drawings prepared expressly for this work by her; also for her help in connection with synonymy. To Mr. R. E. Buchanan and Miss Estelle D. One under the specific name of Arvensis, the other Pratensis. They seem to be the same grass, though we have no description at hand of this species. The beds have done SO poorly that little can be said of it as yet. It has not held the sod well. Spots would become bare, and other grasses finding room would get in and crowd it out. The notes Show it to be a little late starting in the spring, only a moderate yield of green or dry fodder, and that it stands the frosts quite Well.
