Hence, too, the utility of Grammar, which, while it acts the part Of a regulator to language, extends its corrective influence to the thoughts themselves inasmuch as he who learns to speak and write correctly, learns also, at the same time, to think correctly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Grammar of the English Language The grammar of our language has received too little atten tion from men engaged in literary pursuits. Those who have written on the subject, with the exception of Tooke and Webster, have paid too much regard to ancient, and too little to cotemporary and cognate languages - and too little also to the language itself as it is spoken and written. It is not a subject unworthy the attention of men who have attained an elevated rank as scholars. It has, on the contrary, high claims upon those who feel an attachment to elegant litera ture, and a solicitude for the improvement of the medium by which so much pleasure and instruction [8 imparted. -the learned of France and Italy, by. The attention which they have devoted to this branch of literature, have acquired for their respective languages a high reputation; would our own scholars but consider the subject worthy thelr attention, they might easily vindicate the claim of the English to an equality at least with either. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the English Language Order of instruction, Shepherd's Elementary Grammar of the English Language, the same general plan being ad hered to in each. N o pains have been spared to exclude all irrelevant material, to render definitions clear, concise, and accurate, and especially to admit only examples of pure English into the models and illustrations. Some of the general principles of comparative and historical grammar have been introduced, so that advanced pupils may at least begin the process of tracing the growth and development of the language, its changes of construction, the decay of old forms, the rise of modern idioms. The exercises in False Syntax have been designedly limited to a few under each rule, and to auch only as represent clear and palpable viola tions of English usage. Many of the examples inserted in most grammars, to be corrected as False Syntax, are in perfect accord with the usage of classic authors, - the aim of the grammarian in such cases being rather to establish a subjective standard of excellence than to acknowledge the authority of reputable writers, - the sole criterion of lingu istic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Scientific Grammar of the English Language The text books are filled with a mass of absurdity and contradiction totally unworthy of the name of science and the time and labor of those who use them are worse than wasted. This state of things 18 a disgrace to the scholarship of the age, and calls loudly for a reformation. The absolute truth of these statements can easily be demonstrated but there is no room in this volume for such matter. Lest, however, any one should think the author to be peculiar and extreme in his views, let a few others be heard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language and Its Grammar In view of such a necessity in high and normal schools, the author combines in this book the history and derivation of English forms of speech with an analysis of the language and its functions. If the technical terms (which are employed because only by them can the science of language he presented) are mastered in the beginning, the student will find no difficulty in following the author's method to'the end. It will be easy to trace the logical consistency of the language with itself, and the harmony of its develop ment, which together give our glorious English tongue its expansive and expressive power. It will also be ap parent how this language has been able to subordinate all the accidents of an increasing vocabulary to the normal functions of a generous and flexible continuity of life. While this book is especially designed for normal and training schools and teacher-training classes in high schools, it is hoped that it will be found. Valuable as a means of self-help to large numbers of teachers who are striving to secure a better preparation for their work. It is thought that it is also well adapted for use in the summer schools which are now so prominent a fea ture of the educational work of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Common-School Grammar of the English Language If any teacher wishes his pupils to analyze and parse as soon as pos sible, he can require them to commit the Rules of Syntax to memory, and he can then drill them, as they advance from the commencement of the book, on the sentences which begin page 241. Brevity has been constantly studied and great care has been taken to make this grammar as simple, progressive, and interesting as such a book can be made without injuring its scientific value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language: For the Use of Schools IT is generally admitted, at least by those persons who frequently have occa sion to write the English language, that the knowledge of this subject, obtained in our schools, is not sufficient for the various requirements of life. In the fol lowing pages I therefore offer to the public an English Grammar that is de signed to be, for practical purposes, more thorough than any other I have seen, the very largest not excepted. In its matter, it does not differ much from other grammars, except that it has more, and that much of it is fresh from the original sources of the science. What ever has been written on the subject by other grammarians, I have endeavored to ascertain; though I trust I have treated them less piratically and censoriously than most of them have treated their predecessors. The incidfntal remarks on grammar, made by reviewers, philologists, and other writers, have been diligently sought and considered. The best grammars of foreign languages have also been consulted; especially those of Becker, Vivier, Andrews, Ciosby, and Kiihner. Of the exercises to be corrected, about one half are the best of those which form the common inheritance of the science; and for the others I have read some work or works from every State in the Union, in order that the book may show all the various kinds of errors which are now current, like undetected counter feit money, in the various parts of our country. If children imbibed LO errors at home, it were well to exclude such exercises from grammars; but when a person has already caught a disease, I suppose it is best to convince him of his condition, and show him how to get rid of it. Errors in spelling, and errors manufactured by grammarians, are of course objectionable; but errors that are gathered from the usage of good writers, are a very different thing. Besides, parsing and analysis when used alone, become too monotonous and wearisome, and hardly suflice to teach the correct use of the language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Language: Its Grammar, History and Literature It is hoped that the book will prove useful in high schools, academies, and seminaries, as well as to candidates for teachers' examinations and civil service examinations. The various topics have been prepared upon the assumption that the stu dent has already studied a part of the work in an elementary form. The most salient features of the language have been de scribed, and minor details have been left for the teacher to fill in as needed. The utmost clearness and simplicity have been the aim of the writer, and he has been obliged to sacrifice many interesting details to this aim. The study of English grammar is necessarily becoming more and more historical. '1' here are scores of in ections and constructions and idioms which cannot be truly or adequately explained without a reference to the past states of the language, to the time when it was a synthetic or in ected language, like German or Latin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Rational Grammar of the English Language Some of the merits claimed for the book are a natural develop ment of the subject treated, a simple and clear statement of hitherto puzzling points in grammar, and an adequate emphasis of the practical side of the study, - the correct forming of the speech of the pupil. The pupil being led to think for himself (a matter as important in the study of grammar as it is in the study of other sciences) finds the subject so shorn of its terrors that it is interesting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Grammar In teaching the History of the English Language, I have looked in vain for a more available copy of Ben Jonson's English Grammar than that found in his collected works. A production so peculiarly distinct from The Hue and Cry after Cupid, or the Pindaric Ode, seems to call for a volume to itself. And the student of the history of English certainly needs it, as the grammar of the best standing for the seventeenth century.
