To my mind in reviewing those phases of the wheat trade there are three datum points. First, the real price to the farmer for his wheat; second, the price to the con sumer for flour; and third, the differential between these two, which difference includes the costs and profits of transportation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Elevator and Grain Trade, Vol. 39: July 15, 1920 The new house gives Baltimore the greatest grain storage capacity on the Atlantic Coast, and the situation of the port with the consequent les sened rail haul will undoubtedly make it the great grain port of America, so that the new house will need all its speed and all its storage tanks to take care of the business which will be Offered. In fact, a test will come shortly if the rumor is true, that the Pennsylvania Railroad will soon put a fleet of new grain cars into operation between Buffalo and Baltimore. This will afford a rapid movement of grain from Lake Erie to relieve the congestion there, and will insure prompt loading at the port if vessels are furnished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Port of New York To make it easier for business men, officials, teachers, and students to understand New York Harbour and to demand the utmost competence of New York as a port, is the main purpose of this book. It is written from the experience and studies of a Surveyor of Customs of the Port, responsible for directing nearly two thousand Federal employees in applying America's policy to the business which enters and leaves America's first port. First to be discovered, first to be occupied, first to be fought over for its advantages, first in the world in volume and value of commerce, the Port of New York is first in its lessons for America's future and first in immediate im portance to world trade. The third decade of the Twentieth Century will begin with almost half of the colossal foreign trade of the United States of America going out from and coming in through the Port of New York. Few American citizens are untouched by this port. Civics, history, government cannot do without it. It can be outvoted, but it cannot be outled in ability to help or hamper progress in our country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heavy Grain Exports in Voyage-Chartered Ships: Rates and Volume Between 1961 and 1965, the United States exported 165 million long tons of heavy grain-corn, wheat, and soybeans. L/ The average value of this trade was about $2 billion annually, approximately half from wheat exports alone. The cost of shipping grain by ocean freight has a marked influence on the competitive position of the United States in world grain markets. Also, differences in rates affect the competitive positions of the various coasts as shipping points, and the interregional competition of the producing areas. However, the free market nature of ocean freight rates for bulk commodities makes it difficult to obtain information on the general level of rates for grain shipments, their behavior over time, and the degree to which shipping rates from one coast affect shipping rates from the other coasts. The u.s. Department of Agriculture conducted this study to provide such information. In it, the causes of rate fluctuations were explored and a general theory of rate behavior was developed.
