Book Synopsis The Real World of College by : Wendy Fischman
Download or read book The Real World of College written by Wendy Fischman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why higher education in the United States has lost its way, and how universities and colleges can focus sharply on their core mission. For The Real World of College, Wendy Fischman and Howard Gardner analyzed in-depth interviews with more than 2,000 students, alumni, faculty, administrators, parents, trustees, and others, which were conducted at ten institutions ranging from highly selective liberal arts colleges to less-selective state schools. What they found challenged characterizations in the media: students are not preoccupied by political correctness, free speech, or even the cost of college. They are most concerned about their GPA and their resumes; they see jobs and earning potential as more important than learning. Many say they face mental health challenges, fear that they don’t belong, and feel a deep sense of alienation. Given this daily reality for students, has higher education lost its way? Fischman and Gardner contend that US universities and colleges must focus sharply on their core educational mission. Fischman and Gardner, both recognized authorities on education and learning, argue that higher education in the United States has lost sight of its principal reason for existing: not vocational training, not the provision of campus amenities, but to increase what Fischman and Gardner call “higher education capital”—to help students think well and broadly, express themselves clearly, explore new areas, and be open to possible transformations. Fischman and Gardner offer cogent recommendations for how every college can become a community of learners who are open to change as thinkers, citizens, and human beings.

Book Synopsis How to Design an Advisory System for a Secondary School by : Mark F. Goldberg
Download or read book How to Design an Advisory System for a Secondary School written by Mark F. Goldberg and published by ASCD. This book was released on 1998 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mark Goldberg first visited a school with an advisory system, he was impressed by the way such a system personalizes school for secondary students, provides a shared professional experience for the adults in a school, and improves home-school relations. He decided that if given the opportunity, he would bring an advisory program to a secondary school. Later, when he became founding administrator of a high school, he started an advisory system. This book is based on his experiences. Goldberg explains why an advisory system is important, what it requires, and how to tailor the concept to a particular school to provide an enriched experience for students, staff, and parents. An advisory system stresses the advisor-advisee relationship and ensures that every student is known well by at least one adult in a school. That adult--a teacher, administrator, librarian, or other staff member--becomes the student's advocate and the first person the student seeks out to discuss school problems with or to get advice about where to turn for assistance with more serious issues. Such a relationship enhances the student's school life, from course selection to decisions about the future. This practical book provides a comprehensive look at a unique system for personalizing secondary school so students get the most out of their years in school and are better prepared for life after graduation.

Book Synopsis Fascism and Democracy in the Human Mind by : Israel W. Charny
Download or read book Fascism and Democracy in the Human Mind written by Israel W. Charny and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What might you have done if you had been caught up in the Holocaust? In My Lai? In Rwanda? Confronted with acts of violence and evil on scales grand and small, we ask ourselves, baffled, how such horrors can happen?how human beings seemingly like ourselves can commit such atrocities. The answer, I. W. Charny suggests in this important new work, may be found in each one of us, in the different and distinct ways in which we organize our minds. An internationally recognized scholar of the psychology of violence, Charny defines two paradigms of mental organization, the democratic and the fascist, and shows how these systems can determine behavior in intimate relationships, social situations, and events of global significance. With its novel conception of mental health and illness, this book develops new directions for diagnosis and treatment of emotional disorders that are played out in everyday acts of violence against ourselves and others. Fascism and Democracy in the Human Mind also offers much-needed insight into the sources and workings of terrorism and genocide. A sane, radical statement about the guiding principles underlying acts of violence and evil, this book sounds a passionate call for the democratic way of thinking, which recognizes complexity, embraces responsibility, and affirms life.
