Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels New Testament by way of a comprehensive comparison of all its diverse points of view and variant expressions Of the Gospel. Not only so, but in this volume itself, which is but part of the proposed plan, I have recognized the fact that even within the narrower limits of the Gospels which give us our record of the Gospel, there are not only possible but actual diverse impressions of what the Gospel is; and that not only is full justice due to each such impression, taken by itself and for its own sake, but that the very fullest justice to each is the only way of arriving at the truth of all, or at the truth of the whole of which they are the complementary and neces sary parts. The one great lesson that must forerun and make ready the Christian unity of the future is this: that contraries do not necessarily contradict, nor need opposites always oppose. What we want is not to surrender or abolish our differences, but to unite and compose them. We need the truth of every va riant opinion and the light from every opposite point of view. The least fragment is right in so far as it stands for a part of the truth. It is wrong only when, as so Often, it elevates into a ground of division from the other fragments just that which in reality fits it to unite with and supplement them. What has been said may indicate at least the spirit and temper in which the study before us is sought to be conducted. I speak here, of course, only in general ities; the concrete application or use of the principles enunciated must be found and judged in the book itself. As a matter of form rather than of substance, I feel that there will be a question as to the success with which the promise of method or procedure has been carried out in the volume before us. The matter is treated in the following order: (1) the Gospel of the Common Humanity, (2) the Gospel of the Work, and (3) the Gospel of the Person of our Lord. And each of these is to be considered, as far as possible, by itself and independently of the others. There are those who hold the first of these and not the other two, or the first two and not the third - at least in the full sense in which we think Christianity includes them all. And we were under obligation to do full justice to the point of view of all. If I have succeeded but imperfectly in doing this, if I have at times, contrary to promise, run the lower position up into the higher, or anticipated the higher in the lower, it is at least a question where the responsibility lies. It may be that what I myself believe to be, not three gospels, but three aspects or stages of one and the same Gospel, may indeed be so. And it may be that they themselves do, of themselves and in spite Of us, so run up together into one, that it is impossible for us, however honest we may be in the effort to do justice to each by itself, to keep them apart; so predetermined are they, and determined, to find each its own meaning and fulfilment, not in the sep arate truth of each, but in the united and common truth of all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of John The Gospel of John is perhaps the best loved and most frequently read of any of the gospels. Recent scholarship has thrown much light upon the authorship and purpose of this gospel and the part which it played in the developing thought and life Of the early Christians. Investigation, although modifying some current views of this gospel, has added greatly to its value as a Christian document. Viewed in the light of its origin and purpose, it becomes replete with life, not only the life of the Master and his disciples, but with the intellectual and spiritual struggles Of the Christians of the hundred years following the death of Jesus. This course presents the gospel in the light of recent scholarship but simply and for the study of individuals and groups, in the home, church, or the com munity. It is one of the Outline bible-study Courses prepared by the American Institute of Sacred Literature, twelve similar courses being mentioned on a preceding page. This course follows the general method of all the series, giving a daily assignment for reading from the Bible, but requiring no books of reference. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Saturday, February 6, 1848, at nine o'clock A. M., we sighted the coast of China, in the vicinity of bong-kong, the port of our destination. It was the first day of the Chinese New Year, and our captain was unable to procure a pilot until two o'clock P. When a Chinese pilot came on board and took charge of the ship. Mean while the captain, by aid of his charts, had verified his position and placed his good ship, one hundred and fifteen days from New York, at the mouth of the entrance to the harbor of bong-kong. The wind being light and ahead it was nine o'clock r. M. When, with grateful hearts, we dropped anchor in the harbor and looked shoreward on the flashing lights of Victoria, the name given to the English settlement on the island. This name, however, as we soon ascertained, is but little used, every per son applying hong-kong, the name of the island, to the settlement. Book excerpt: We tend to look to the New Testament to tell us about Jesus, yet it was the Old Testament about which Jesus said, “the Scriptures point to me!” In The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie takes readers from Genesis through Malachi, shining the light of Christ on the promise of a descendent who will put an end to the curse of sin; the story of a father who offers up his son as a sacrifice; the symbol of a temple where people can meet with God; the prophecy of a servant who will suffer; the person of a king who will rule with righteousness—and so much more. Day by day throughout the year, readers will see the beauty of Christ in fresh new ways, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation for who Jesus is and what he accomplished through his Cross and Resurrection.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Two Ways: A SermonWhileit is certain that all mankind are born on the broad way, our subject refers only to the time when we are able to make our choice. We must choose one or other of these ways. All who hear the Gospel will be inexcusable if they continue in the sinful ways of the world. There can be no valid excuse for con tinuance in sin. Some, indeed, may be ingenious. Enough to advance a plausible excuse; but no excuse can be made that will take away sin, or make the un pardoned sinner acceptable to (ind. And the Abbé Loisy's epoch making book, The Gospel and the Church, serve to mark on opposite sides the progress of modern theo logical thought. Both in their similarities and by their contrasts these two books may help an in quirer find his way amid the confusions of new biblical investigations to clearer appreciations of the origins and values Of Christian institutions and be liefs. The two conceptions of Christianity which are presented in these volumes confront each other like separate cliffs; if one takes his stand at the top Of either of them he will find no bridge across to the other; but if he follows the way which runs between them at the bottom, he will be led out to a larger conception of Christianity in which their separation disappears. Fundamentally, the revolt of Hamack from received Protestant dogmatism, and the protest of Loisy against Official Romanism, have, more than at first may appear, a common ground in historical. Book excerpt: Historically, the church's ministry of grounding new believers in the essentials of the faith has been known as catechesis--systematic instruction in faith foundations, including what we believe, how we pray and worship, and how we conduct our lives. For most evangelicals today, however, this very idea is an alien concept. Packer and Parrett, concerned for the state of the church, seek to inspire a much needed evangelical course correction. This new book makes the case for a recovery of significant catechesis as a nonnegotiable practice of churches, showing the practice to be complementary to, and of no less value than, Bible study, expository preaching, and other formational ministries, and urging evangelical churches to find room for this biblical ministry for the sake of their spiritual health and vitality.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World and the Gospel As the months of war have passed, the conviction has grown in my mind that if the missionary move ment is to maintain its place among the many urgent tasks which will claim our attention on the restoration of peace, and to accomplish its work in the new world into which we are being brought, it is necessary for us to go back to first principles and take a fresh hold of the fundamental truths on which the whole undertaking rests. I believe that if we do this we shall find in the missionary idea, truly apprehended and heartily embraced, the liberation and inspiration that we need if we are to succeed in the difficult tasks before us in days to come. To meet the moral and spiritual needs, which in the light of the war are so patent and real, the Church requires a more passionate, exultant, venturesome faith in the Gospel entrusted to it, and the one sure way in which we can learn anew what the Gospel means is boldly to assert its right to rule the whole life of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On to Christ, the Gospel of the New Era The object of this study is to bring home to all thoughtful minds some of the problems of the Church in dealing with the opportunities of the New Era. An effort is made in the first half of this book to point out the failures of the past, and then in the last half we try to show how the Church can meet these problems in a practical way. The problem is outlined in the first chapter and then different phases of it are discussed with suggestions of how they should be met in the following chapters. In the Second Part we make some practical sugges tions on the reconstruction of the Church's life and thought. Some of these solutions may seem radical, but it must be remembered that structural weaknesses cannot be permanently repaired by superficial patches. The structure must be rebuilt and the weakness must be climi nated. It may be impossible to get unanimous support for suggestions that seem to affect whole ecclesiastical organisations, but no other alternative seems adequate to meet the needs of the New Era.
