Book excerpt: The Book of Job has been a rich source of truth and comfort for its readers throughout the ages, but the crowning glory of this book is the prophetic testimony it bears to the sufferings that Jesus Christ would endure as the savior of his people. The Shadow of Christ in the Book of Job examines the historical character of Job as a typological figure, whose experience of suffering leading to glory was meant to portray the work of Christ, and provide assurance and comfort to all who bear affliction in faith.

It contains no fact, no line of argument, with which they are not familiar. Instead, it is intended to assist that large and respectable class of intelligent men and women who have not an opportunity to study the Bible critically, but who would like to know the real meaning of those ominous passages of Scripture that are supposed by some people to indicate the destiny of impenitent sinners in the future life. It is not a controversial treatise, but a candid, careful attempt to ascertain, if possible, the exact import of the Word of God. A 30-year-old case is being reopened, and Rebus's team from back then is suspected of foul play. With Malcolm Fox as the investigating officer, are the past and present about to collide in a shocking and murderous fashion? And does Rebus have anything to hide? His old colleagues called themselves 'the Saints', and swore a bond on something called 'the Shadow Bible'. But times have changed and the crimes of the past may not stay hidden much longer, especially with a referendum on Scottish independence just around the corner. Who are the saints and who are the sinners? And can the one ever become the other?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels New Testament by way of a comprehensive comparison of all its diverse points of view and variant expressions Of the Gospel. Not only so, but in this volume itself, which is but part of the proposed plan, I have recognized the fact that even within the narrower limits of the Gospels which give us our record of the Gospel, there are not only possible but actual diverse impressions of what the Gospel is; and that not only is full justice due to each such impression, taken by itself and for its own sake, but that the very fullest justice to each is the only way of arriving at the truth of all, or at the truth of the whole of which they are the complementary and neces sary parts. The one great lesson that must forerun and make ready the Christian unity of the future is this: that contraries do not necessarily contradict, nor need opposites always oppose. What we want is not to surrender or abolish our differences, but to unite and compose them. We need the truth of every va riant opinion and the light from every opposite point of view. The least fragment is right in so far as it stands for a part of the truth. It is wrong only when, as so Often, it elevates into a ground of division from the other fragments just that which in reality fits it to unite with and supplement them. What has been said may indicate at least the spirit and temper in which the study before us is sought to be conducted. I speak here, of course, only in general ities; the concrete application or use of the principles enunciated must be found and judged in the book itself. As a matter of form rather than of substance, I feel that there will be a question as to the success with which the promise of method or procedure has been carried out in the volume before us. The matter is treated in the following order: (1) the Gospel of the Common Humanity, (2) the Gospel of the Work, and (3) the Gospel of the Person of our Lord. And each of these is to be considered, as far as possible, by itself and independently of the others. There are those who hold the first of these and not the other two, or the first two and not the third - at least in the full sense in which we think Christianity includes them all. And we were under obligation to do full justice to the point of view of all. If I have succeeded but imperfectly in doing this, if I have at times, contrary to promise, run the lower position up into the higher, or anticipated the higher in the lower, it is at least a question where the responsibility lies. It may be that what I myself believe to be, not three gospels, but three aspects or stages of one and the same Gospel, may indeed be so. And it may be that they themselves do, of themselves and in spite Of us, so run up together into one, that it is impossible for us, however honest we may be in the effort to do justice to each by itself, to keep them apart; so predetermined are they, and determined, to find each its own meaning and fulfilment, not in the sep arate truth of each, but in the united and common truth of all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anders Cullhed’s study The Shadow of Creusa explores the early Christian confrontation with pagan culture as a remote anticipation of many later clashes between religious orthodoxy and literary fictionality. After a careful survey of Saint Augustine’s critical attitudes to ancient myth and poetry, summarized as a long drawn-out farewell, Cullhed examines other Late Antique dismissals as well as appropriations of the classical heritage. Macrobius, Martianus Capella and Boethius figure among the Late Antique intellectuals who attempted to save or even restore the old mythology by means of allegorical representation. On the other hand, pious poets such as Paulinus of Nola and Bible epic writers such as Iuvencus or Avitus of Vienne turned against pagan lies, and the mighty arch-bishop of Milan, Saint Ambrose, played off unconditional Christian truth against the last Roman strongholds of cultural pluralism. Thus, The Shadow of Creusa elucidates a cultural conflict which was to leave traces all through the Middle Ages and reach down to our present day.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Synoptic Gospels and the Book of Acts So many volumes have been published in this field that it may seem a work of supererogation to add to the list. Our only excuse for doing so is that we have made a new pre scutation and arrangement Of the existing material, and that we have attempted to give it added interest and life by joining with it a study of the personalities of the writers involved and of the influence of their personalities upon their books. As far as we know, this has not been done before in the same manner or to the same degree. One of the writer's students gave a series of lectures in a Western college upon Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and he reports that at the end of the course the president of the school thanked him for them and said: Do you know, I never more than half believed before that those evangel ists were real men! Now they will be living personalities for me. That has been one aim in this and the preced ing volumes - to give added interest to the study of the New Testament books, because in them we were able to see the manifested characters of the men who wrote them, and to realize that however little we might know of these authors, they yet were not mere shadows or myths, but real men with real messages taken out of their own real experience in life. Too many people have only half believed that these authors were real men, and for that reason they may have found themselves only half interested in their writings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yahweh-Elohim: The Memorial Name Expositions concerning this name, in all the beauty and accuracy, which a deep knowledge of the original languages, and the law and the testi mony could give, are contained in the writings of Dr. Thomas. To his valuable aid, we are indebted, for the true light of the Scriptures, concerning this glorious name yahweh-elohim. In his Pha nerosis, we find these words: The Memorial Name, exhibited in Moses' writings, is not Simply a word of four letters, given to an abstraction, as men give names to their children: but a name memorial of a future manifestation of the Eternal Spirit: which manifestation will not be of One, through One only: but of one in and through ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands: that the Name covers them all; and consequently, the thousands of thousands are but One Yahweh (p. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Gospel The Christ came to me one day that I was bowed down in sorrow over the sins and imperfections of our time. For in my youth I had dreamed of an ideal country, a Christian land, and 10, what I found all around me during twenty years of search, had so little of His Spirit that it seemed to me as a pagan land, where He was unknown. For, since my younger years, I tried to walk in His steps, as the shadow follows the substance, and, as I came nearer to Him, He came nearer to me, until He had His abode within my heart and was as one with me. When He abided with me and we had become more as one soul, when He had imparted to me some of His Spirit, He revealed Himself more and more. I had sowed in me the seeds of His Spirit and I reaped in return a consciousness like His. In time I became so as one with Him that I could almost see things as He would have seen them, and judge them with His judgment. Then we set out together in the walks of men, saw things as they were, and, in the silence of my conscience I heard His Spirit pronounce its judgment on our age and their shortcomings. I submitted to Him the burning questions of our time, our doubts and perplexities and, out in the world or in the silence of soul communions, He told me His opinions on them. He told me also of Himself, His mission and of the mistakes men had made about Him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
