Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and Its Tributaries The study of Christian origins during the last century has passed through two well-marked phases. Attention was directed in the earlier period to the inner development of the primitive Church. The New Testament writings were critically examined with a view to establishing their date and authorship and purpose, their relation to one another and to Christian practice and doctrine. This field of inquiry has not yet by any means been fully explored, but it has opened out into a far wider one. It has been discovered that the new movement was affected, at almost every point, by the general life of the age, and that many conceptions which were formerly regarded as purely Christian have their affinities in contemporary religion and philosophy. The investigation of these alien sources of Christian thought has been eagerly pressed forward in recent years by a host of scholars, some of whom have built farreaching conclusions on very slender evidence, while others are too obviously bent on discrediting the Christian message by identifying it with one type or another of ancient superstition. These extravagances must not be taken too seriously. Every new instrument for the better understanding of our religion has at first been used as a weapon against it. One has only to recall how the literary criticism which has done so much to establish the Bible on a surer basis was supposed, a generation ago, to have undermined its authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in Its Native Land The gospel gives us the full picture of the earthly life of our Lord, and it is our duty to read it with a pure and sincere heart as well as a simple mind. In order to fully understand the complete simplicity of the gospel it is almost necessary to live, for a short time, in the land where it was spoken, and learn the manners and customs of the native people. The cities and villages, the plains and mountains, lakes and rivers every corner still represents and illustrates the earthly life of our Lord and the words spoken by Him. For this reason thousands of people visit the Holy Land every year. Many books have been written to help those who cannot come. The majority of these contain valuable information. But the great majority lack that simplicity which is essential to the ready grasp of the average reader, and for the most part illustrations are omitted, these adding so much to the understanding of pen descriptions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Marvelous Work and a Wonder: The Gospel Restored Prefaces, as a rule, are not read, and we do not intend to bore the reader with any unaccepted matter. Perhaps, however, we may be permitted to observe that to arrive at proper opinions concerning any doctrine or denomination it is but fair that we reserve our verdict until it is heard in its own behalf. Rendering a decision previous to this would result in deprivation to self of the information sought, and do injustice to the subject considered. We are aware that time is valuable and that the sundry essential labors of life, engaging nearly all the attention, make it necessary that Whatever time there be to spare should be devoted to the most important questions. It is that which we offer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But I have endeavoured to make every chapter intelligible to readers who are unacquainted with Greek, the welcome which has been extended to my Books of the New Testament having proved to me that there are many persons who, whether they can read Greek or not, want to know the true history of the Gospels. It has been necessary to omit all discussion of many interesting questions. But, I trust that attention has been called to all the most vital, and especially to those which bear upon the Person and teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ. - From the Preface

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels and the Gospel Such readers required no general introduction to the subject to ensure a patient consideration of the immensely important problems of Gospel criticism laid before them; and even now, when these papers go forth in book-form to a wider public, the majority of my readers will still be of those who take an intelligent interest in the subject, and who will approach it without pre j udice. They have the courage to think for them selves, and are, therefore, not to be deterred from reading a book because it bears the name of a Society whose intentions and labours have, for the past quarter of a century, been for the most part as greatly misunderstood as the work of all pioneers the world over in every advance towards a better understanding of the nature of things. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. But these human aspects of religion mark the limitations of history. Foreign to its occupation are all speculations and presumptions regarding the superhuman influences which may be supposed to have determined or affected the message of a teacher or the lives of believers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel According to Christ: And Other Sermons "The Gospel according to Christ," is a good start for a fresh and helpful volume. Daniel Webster, in opening his most celebrated speech in reply to Hayne of South Carolina, January 26, 1830, passed into his argument agaist nullification through this most beautiful opening, viz.: "When the mariner has been tossed for many days in thick weather and on an unknown sea, he naturally avails himself of the first pause in the storm, the earliest glance of the sun, to take his latitude and ascertain how far the elements have driven him from his true course." In this volume we are enabled to imitate this prudence. In the storm and confused utterances of theological and humanitarian controversies and disquisitions that characize our time as an age of many gospels, it is most refreshing to have a glance at the Gospel according to Christ. This glance at the Sun of Righteousness may help us to determine how far we have drifted. One beauty of this book is found in the fact that Mr. Albertson does not keep the apostles forever on trial for perjury, but sends them about doing good everywhere. This is not a volume of apologetics. It is rather a new and gentle reincarnation of New Testament utterances. Jesus Christ seems to occupy an in adequate position in the Catholic cult. The Gospel is not the obvious norm of Catholic piety. The Catholic prayer is not addressed directly to the Father in heaven, and its apparent indirectness offends the superficial observer.
