Book excerpt: What Elvis book would be complete without Richard Nixon? He makes an appearance in this newer testament, as Caesar. The cast of characters also includes Gladys Presley as The Blessed Virgin, Frank Sinatra as King Herod and Sid Vicious as The Man Possessed With Devils. Instead of loaves and fishes, Elvis feeds the multitude with peanut butter 'n' 'nana sandwiches. Lazarus isn't raised from the dead; Gladys is. Instead of walking on water, Elvis and Jesus go surfin'. And golfing. And there's something on almost every page guaranteed to offend someone; Jerry Fallwell and Pat Robertson appear as The Pharisees, Ronald Reagan as Blind Bartimaeus, Andy Griffith as The Centurion and J. Edgar Hoover as Aunt Bea. Does Jesus actually bless homosexuality in Matthew 19? Is Michael Jordan the Antichrist? Ever wonder what God's first name is? Then The Gospel of Elvis is for you.

Book excerpt: On a bus outside Vegas, a washed-up gambler meets a strange preacher As the bus rolls away from the Las Vegas strip, Timber Goodman screws his eyes shut and tries to keep his stomach from lurching. He came to Vegas in hopes of jump-starting his fading broadcasting career, but he leaves hung over and dead broke. Beside him sits a preacher in cowboy boots, whose only luggage is a Bible, a bottle of bourbon, and a razor-sharp bowie knife. This is Ezekiel Blizzard Jr., a disgraced man of God who’s got a tale to tell—and doesn’t care if Timber’s listening. As Zeke’s story winds on, Timber finds himself enraptured. In this sweeping novel of the American South, Joe Samuel Starnes explores the gritty side of faith and shows that all it takes to save a wandering man is another lost soul.

Book excerpt: What does it mean to be evangelical? What does it mean to be Catholic? Can one consider oneself both simultaneously? Francis Beckwith has wrestled with these questions personally and professionally. He was baptized a Catholic, but his faith journey led him to Protestant evangelicalism. He became a philosophy professor at Baylor University and president of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS). And then, in 2007, after much prayer, counsel, and consideration, Beckwith decided to return to the Catholic church and step down as ETS president. This provocative book details Beckwith's journey, focusing on his internal dialogue between the Protestant theology he embraced for most of his adult life and Catholicism. He seeks to explain what prompted his decision and offers theological reflection on whether one can be evangelical and Catholic, affirming his belief that one can be both. EXCERPT It's difficult to explain why one moves from one Christian tradition to another. It is like trying to give an account to your friends why you chose to pursue for marriage this woman rather than that one, though both may have a variety of qualities that you found attractive. It seems to me then that any account of my return to the Catholic church, however authentic and compelling it is to me, will appear inadequate to anyone who is absolutely convinced that I was wrong. Conversely, my story will confirm in the minds of many devout Catholics that the supernatural power of the grace I received at baptism and confirmation as a youngster were instrumental in drawing me back to the Mother Church. Given these considerations, I confess that there is an awkwardness in sharing my journey as a published book, knowing that many fellow Christians will scrutinize and examine my reasons in ways that appear to some uncharitable and to others too charitable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s no accident that Jesus’ first miracle was turning water into wine! Written by an Episcopalian priest-slash-bar owner, this thoughtful, well-written book of spiritual essays distills lessons about the character of God from stories about adult beverages. “Oh taste and see that the Lord is good.” —Psalm 34:8 Being upright does not mean you have to be uptight—at least according to Father Bill Miller, an Episcopal priest/bar owner. As a fan of both spirits and the Holy Spirit, he is very familiar with the intoxicating lure of some of God’s finer creations, and in The Beer Drinker’s Guide to God he brews up insightful, beautifully written reflections about the strange intersections of God, and, well…beer. In this humorous collection of essays, he weaves together stories from his life in ministry, his travels in search of the world’s best Scotch, his conversations with Trappist monks, and colorful evenings in his bar, Padre’s. He also reflects on the lessons he’s learned from baseball, Playboy bunnies, Las Vegas, and his attempts to become chaplain to the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, all while (somehow) crafting essays about the spiritual importance of generosity, sacrifice, openness, and spiritual transformation. Really. Essays include: -WWJD: What Would Jesus Drink? -Brewed Over Me and Distill Me, O Lord -Pearls of Great Price -Chicken Soup for the Hooters Girl’s Soul -Miss Hawaii and Other Miss Takes -Don’t Leave me Hanging: The Theological Significance of Athletic Supporters From the deeply touching to the laugh-out-loud funny, these stories ultimately open our minds to the glory of God and our mouths to some of God’s more delicious creations. The Beer Drinker’s Guide to God is a smart, hilarious book for those thirsty for God’s truth.

Book excerpt: Elvis Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, to Gladys Love Presley (born Smith) in the two-room house his father, Vernon Elvis Presley, built for the birth. Jesse Garon Presley, her identical twin brother, was delivered 35 minutes before him, stillborn. Presley became close to both his parents and formed a particularly close bond with his mother. The family attended an Assembly of God church, where he found his initial musical inspiration. On his mother’s side of the family, Presley’s ancestry was Scottish and Irish, with some French Normans. Gladys and the rest of the family apparently believed that her great-great-great-grandmother, Morning Dove White, was Cherokee; Elaine Dundy’s biography supports this idea, but at least one genealogical researcher has challenged it for several reasons. Vernon’s ancestors were of German or Scottish descent. Gladys was considered by relatives and friends to be the dominant member of the little family. Vernon moved from job to job with little ambition. The family often depended on help from neighbours and government food aid. In 1938, they lost their home after Vernon was convicted of altering a cheque issued by his landlord and employer at one point. He was imprisoned for eight months, while Gladys and Elvis moved in with relatives.

Book excerpt: Hailed as "a masterwork" by the Wall Street Journal, Careless Loveis the full, true, and mesmerizing story of Elvis Presley's last two decades, in the long-awaited second volume of Peter Guralnick's masterful two-part biography. Winner of the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award Last Train to Memphis, the first part of Guralnick's two-volume life of Elvis Presley, was acclaimed by the New York Times as "a triumph of biographical art." This concluding volume recounts the second half of Elvis' life in rich and previously unimagined detail, and confirms Guralnick's status as one of the great biographers of our time. Beginning with Presley's army service in Germany in 1958 and ending with his death in Memphis in 1977, Careless Love chronicles the unravelling of the dream that once shone so brightly, homing in on the complex playing-out of Elvis' relationship with his Machiavellian manager, Colonel Tom Parker. It's a breathtaking revelatory drama that for the first time places the events of a too-often mistold tale in a fresh, believable, and understandable context. Elvis' changes during these years form a tragic mystery that Careless Love unlocks for the first time. This is the quintessential American story, encompassing elements of race, class, wealth, sex, music, religion, and personal transformation. Written with grace, sensitivity, and passion, Careless Love is a unique contribution to our understanding of American popular culture and the nature of success, giving us true insight at last into one of the most misunderstood public figures of our times.
