Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was another day at the office. The drawers in my desk were slowly creep open and close. It was a particularly windy on this day, I was on the one hundred and third floor of the world trade center tower two. When it was windy, the building had a built in sway factor of up to four feet in either direction. Some people actually got nauseous from the constant swaying, some would leave the building to get a break. Just another day on the bond trading floor of a major investment bank where I worked. My head hurt from last nights imbibing to the wee hours with friends. I was now in the land of relentless harassment and pressure. Lunch at my desk where I was chained for most of the day. If you ordered a salad to make up for last nights bad decisions, you were endlessly ridiculed. I was very lucky to have the seat I was in, The days were long and tedious but worth the rewards. The city was becoming bloated, glutted, silly with ambition. The buildings were higher, the morals looser, the liquor cheaper. We all drank the kool-Aid. The city was filled with the ethos of the time relishing in frenzy and moneymaking, it was the eighties in New York City. There are few desires more deeply human than the desire to escape whatever reality you are in. The problem is not the nicer your life is, the more resources you have to escape it, but rather the limits of being a person. You are stuck with you. Its the precondition of existence. I wanted incredible things to happen to me, not the slow burning let down of adulthood. I was becoming too many parts of myself, starting to break apart, an urban sauce over cooked. Its a very demanding environment that is geared toward survival of the fittest. Your energy level goes up, along with your radar and your prowess. It sparks a certain aggressiveness. It breeds insincerity, pretentions, dishonesty, affectation, ostentatiousness and irreverence. Not very healthy on any level. Thats when the letter arrived. I had applied to the Peace Corps on an insane impulse, not thinking for a second a Wall Street guy would be of any interest to anybody anywhere in any capacity. The country of choice was the Kingdom of Tonga in the South Pacific. I had never heard of it. I ran off to the library to find out more about this remote island chain in Polynesia. The Peace Corps had accepted me for a two year stint. I would be working for a missionary who would be overseeing the Prison Fellowship International. This was an organization born out of the experience of Charles Colson, former aide to President Nixon. Convicted for a Watergate-related offense, Colson served seven months in prison. During that time he saw and experienced the difference faith in Jesus makes in peoples lives. He became convinced that the real solution to crime is found through spiritual renewal. He wanted to help men and women turn their lives around Through Christ. In 1979, he founded Prison Fellowship International, extending the mission and work beyond the United States. In 1983, Prison Fellowship International received special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Now it’s the largest, most extensive association of national Christian ministries working within the criminal justice field. The grassroots presence enables it to minister to prisoners and their families in culturally relevant ways. The heart of the ministry is their volunteers, that would be me. What a complete and utter shock to my system. What were they thinking? Im not religious, nor do I have any experience in this field or anything like it. Im a Bond salesman on Wall Street. The Kingdom of Tonga was an antidote to New York. It was a type of cleansing. A revival. A chance to see life in the simple light of daily existence. Being there required me to learn how to exist in real life without all the usual escapes and distractions. Now all of my exits had been taken away from me. Pulled right out from under me, like the ground itself.

Book excerpt: As more people filled the packed church, Jack was forced to move down the wall toward the front, until he was very near the altar. From that vantage point, he could see the young mothers face. He found himself staring at her, unable to look away. He didnt know why. Perhaps it was the terrible sadness in her face. He watched her intently as she clutched a little brown teddy bear and a picture of her daughter, who now lay only feet away in a small casket. The size of it made him wince. Jack felt the anger rise within him. At sixty years old, Jack Steele has long since retired from putting criminalsespecially those that hurt childrenin prison. Following his retirement from law enforcement, he built a successful multimillion-dollar company, allowing him financial freedom in his golden years. Following the unexpected loss of his wife, Sarah, however, he withdraws into himself. He becomes a loner whose only companion is his German shepherd, Sadie. Sick of a court system that lets monsters out of prison to torture and kill again and again, he decides there is only one way to stop them. Using his own resources, his credentials as a retired police officer, and his .380 Walther, he and his dog begin to huntbringing justice to those whom the system cannot control. After all, enough is enough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring contemporary Okinawan culture, politics, and historical memory, this book argues that the long Japanese tradition of defining Okinawa as a subordinate and peripheral part of Japan means that all claims of Okinawan distinctiveness necessarily become part of the larger debate over contemporary identity. The contributors trace the renascence of the debate in the burst of cultural and political expression that has flowered in the past decade, with the rapid growth of local museums and memorials and the huge increase in popularity of distinctive Okinawan music and literature, as well as in political movements targeting both U.S. military bases and Japanese national policy on ecological, developmental, and equity grounds. A key strategy for claiming and shaping Okinawan identity is the mobilization of historical memory of the recent past, particularly of the violent subordination of Okinawan interests to those of the Japanese and American governments in war and occupation. Its intertwining themes of historical memory, nationality, ethnicity, and cultural conflict in contemporary society address central issues in anthropology, sociology, contemporary history, Asian Studies, international relations, cultural studies, and post-colonial studies. Contributions by: Matt Allen, Linda Isako Angst, Asato Eiko, Gerald Figal, Aaron Gerow, Laura Hein, Michael Molasky, Steve Rabson, James E. Roberson, Mark Selden, and Julia Yonetani.

Book excerpt: In the much-anticipated follow-up to the bestselling and beloved The Travelling Cat Chronicles, seven cats weave their way through their owners’ lives, climbing, comforting, nestling, and sometimes just tripping everyone up in this uplifting collection of tales by international bestselling author Hiro Arikawa. Against the backdrop of changing seasons in Japan, we meet Spin, a kitten rescued from the recycling bin, whose playful nature and simple needs teach an anxious father how to parent his own human baby; a colony of wild cats on a popular holiday island show a young boy not to stand in nature’s way; a family is perplexed by their cat’s undying devotion to their charismatic but uncaring father; a woman curses how her cat will not stop visiting her at night; and an elderly cat hatches a plan to pass into the next world as a spirit so that he and his owner may be in each other’s lives forever. Bursting with love and warmth, The Goodbye Cat exquisitely explores the cycle of life, from birth to death—as each of the seven stories explores how, in different ways, the steadiness and devotion of a well-loved cat never lets us down. A huge bestseller in Japan, this magical book is a joyous celebration of the wondrousness of cats and why we choose to share our lives with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three young members of the crew of a merchant ship sailing in the South Pacific are the sole survivors of its wreck in a storm. Swept ashore an uninhabited island, their initial efforts to survive soon lead them to a settled life in what seems to be a tropical paradise. However, their enjoyment of their new island home doesn’t dampen their desire to return to England, their homeland. As their planning and preparations to escape patiently unfold, encounters with visitors both native and European dramatically alter their idyllic existence. The dangers they confront threaten not only their hopes, but their lives—and ultimately lead to unexpected results. The Coral Island is the most popular and enduring of R. M. Ballantyne’s prodigious literary output. It was met with acclaim on publication, and has never been out of print since. His own travels as a young man had taken him for a few years to Hudson Bay, and this experience formed the basis of his early writings—adventure stories for younger readers, boys in particular. Meeting with some success, he began to use other exotic locations for further adventure writing, giving rise to The Coral Island, written in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe. Ballantyne’s work in its turn influenced others. Robert Louis Stevenson was an admirer of Ballantyne, and he acknowledged the influence of The Coral Island on his own Treasure Island. In a different way, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies is the antitype of the “Muscular Christianity” ideal found in Ballantyne’s work, internalizing the evil which Ballantyne’s young heroes, for the most part, confronted as something outside themselves. With its vigorous narration, attention to detail of flora and fauna, and social and ethnographic observations, the appeal of Ballantyne’s most popular work remains evident, even while its role in mid-Victorian imperialism continues to be debated and re-evaluated. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
