Book excerpt: In the first half of the twentieth century, Jack Trice, Ozzie Simmons, and Johnny Bright played college football for three Iowa institutions: Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, and Drake University, respectively. At a time when the overwhelming majority of their opponents and teammates were white, the three men, all African American, sustained serious injuries on the gridiron due to foul play, either because of their talents, their race, or, most likely, an ugly combination of the two. Moments of Impact tells their stories and examines how the local communities of which they were once a part have forgotten and remembered those assaults over time. Of particular interest are the ways those memories have been expressed in a number of commemorations, including a stadium name, a trophy, and the dedication of a football field. Jaime Schultz focuses on the historical and racial circumstances of the careers of Trice, Simmons, and Bright as well as the processes and politics of cultural memory. Schultz develops the concept of “racialized memory”—a communal form of remembering imbued with racial significance—to suggest that the racial politics of contemporary America have generated a need to redress historical wrongs, congratulate Americans on the ostensible racial progress they have made, and divert attention from the unrelenting persistence of structural and ideological racism.

This book provides a look at some of the most memorable players, coaches, and games of the last seventy-five years. From the Golden Era of 1934–41, which included five national titles, Sonny Franck and Bill Daley recall their most memorable games. The Gophers won another national title and went to two Rose Bowls in the early ’60s under coach Murray Warmath and quarterback Sandy Stephens, who became the first black quarterback to earn All-America honors at a major college. Warmath remembers the second Rose Bowl as his most memorable game. Other memorable Gophers include future NFL legend Bud Grant, future NFL coaching great Tony Dungy, and current Denver Broncos player Eric Decker, all of whom are featured in Game of My Life Minnesota Gophers.

The emphasis is largely on the last half of the 20th century, during which time Christensen did the radio play-by-play of Golden Gopher football for 50 consecutive seasons, 510 games, and U of M basketball for 45 straight seasons, 1,309 games. Christensen, a broadcasting award member of the College Football Hall of Fame, tells stories ranging from dramatic victories to more lighthearted, humorous events that combine to form a Big Ten tapestry, with the University of Minnesota at its core. From the Minnesota wrestlers’ incredible comeback for a 2001 NCAA championship to the Gophers’ game-ending field goals that led to remarkable upsets to the golf team’s string of birdies that enabled the squad to make the cut and James McLean to capture the NCAA individual crown, the book covers it all. Perfect for the bookshelf of any fan of Gophers athletics!
