Book excerpt: The goblin spider genus Pescennina Simon has been known only from females of its type species from Venezuela, whereas the more recently described genus Marsupopaea Cooke has been known only from males taken in Colombia. Discovery of the missing sexes, in both cases, indicates that these spiders belong to the Scaphiella complex; males have dorsal abdominal scuta that are absent in females. The presence, in the males of both type species, of a terminal, coiled embolus that can be held in an excavated "pouch" at the anterior edge of the sternum and is matched by coiled anterior ducts in the female genitalia, suggests that these taxa are congeneric. Marsupopaea is therefore newly synonymized with Pescennina, and its type species, M. sturmi Cooke, is placed as a junior synonym of P. cupida (Keyserling). Species of Pescennina occur widely in North, Central, and South America; many are apparently ant mimics, with color patterns (and sometimes a constricted abdomen) that enhance their antlike appearance. Although most of the species seem to be ground dwelling, with the extremely narrow geographic ranges typical of goblin spiders, at least four species inhabit the forest canopy, and at least one of those species is much more widespread. Males of the type species, P. epularis Simon, and females of P. cupida (Keyserling) are described for the first time; 16 new species are described: P. iviei, P. gertschi, P. sumidero, and P. ibarrai from Mexico; P. murphyorum from Nicaragua and Costa Rica; P. viquezi from Costa Rica; P. laselva from Costa Rica and Panama; P. fusca from Panama; P. arborea from Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador; P. magdalena and P. sasaima from Colombia; P. orellana from Ecuador; P. piura and P. loreto from Peru; P. grismadoi from Bolivia; and P. otti from southern Brazil.

Ischnothyreus vestigator Simon, also from Sri Lanka, is transferred to Aprusia based on recently collected topotypical specimens. The female is described for the first time. Three new species are described: A. veddah Grismado and Deeleman, A. kataragama Grismado and Deeleman (both from Sri Lanka), and A. kerala Grismado and Deeleman (from southwestern India). The genus is recognized by the relatively small to medium-sized dorsal scutum on the abdomen of both sexes, the strong macrosetae on the forelegs and by the conformation of the male palp, with the cymbium and bulb fused and a tiny, slightly sclerotized embolus.

Book excerpt: The goblin spider genus Khamisia Saaristo and van Harten was based on a single female from Yemen characterized by large lateral extensions of the sternum that widely separate coxae II and III. Three new species, including the first known males of the genus, are described: K. hayer from the United Arab Emirates, K. atlit from Israel, and K. holmi from Kenya. All these species are united by having only two trichobothria on the palpal tibia; K. hayer has apparently been introduced into Cape Verde. Other specimens with a similarly modified sternum have been found in Africa, Madagascar, and the Virgin Islands, but differ in having the normal set of three trichobothria on the palpal tibia. The new genus Khamisina is established for three new species that also differ in having an abdominal color pattern, a punctate sternum, and uniquely shaped cheliceral setae: K. kivu from DR Congo, K. kilifi from Kenya, and K. ibadan from Nigeria. A second new genus, Khamiscar, is established for six new species from Madagascar in which the sternum is widened posteriorly and bears marginal radiating ridges, and the tarsal organs have only a single raised receptor: K. anta, K. maro, K. tola, K. kiri, K. baly, and K. ambi. A third new genus, Khamisoides, is established for three bizarre new species from the Virgin Islands (K. muchmorei from St. Croix; K. edwardsi and K. calabash from St. John) that differ in having only two eyes, fused posterior median spinnerets, and female genitalia with a pair of lateral receptacula and anteriorly directed apodemes.

Gradunguloonopscomprises twelve species, all new and described in this contribution: G. mutum (type species) from Brazil and Peru, G. bonaldoi, G. amazonicus, G. urucu, G. pacanari, G. juruti from Brazil, G. erwini from Peru, G. orellana and G. nadineae from Ecuador, G. benavidesae and G. florezi from Colombia, and G. raptor from Venezuela. Two preliminary intrageneric groups are proposed on the basis of their female genital morphology: the bonaldoi group, to which are assigned the species with the anterior section comprising only a single anterior sclerite, and the mutum group, with a more complex, tripartite anterior section.

The closest relatives of the new genus appear to be three similar, but as yet undescribed, Neotropical genera that share those characters, but the members of Varioonops are united by a putative synapomorphy that does not seem to occur in those undescribed groups: a granulated sternum. Attention is drawn to the cymbial cone, a structure (possibly a receptor) found near the tip of the cymbium in Varioonops, members of the Orchestininae, and at least some soft-bodied members of the Oonopinae. A total of 23 new species are described: V. cafista (the type species), V. velsala, V. montesta, V. spatharum, V. poas, V. varablanca, V. tortuguero, V. veragua, V. heredia, and V. girven from Costa Rica, V. ramila and V. sansidro from Costa Rica and Panama, V. funator and V. cerrado from Panama, V. edvardi and V. sinesama from Colombia, and V. yacambu, V. trujillo, V. pittieri, V. chordio, V. parlata, V. potaguo, and V. grancho from Venezuela.

Book excerpt: A new genus, Pseudodysderina, is established for a group of species that resemble those of Dysderina Simon in having grooves connecting both the anterior and posterior spiracles. These spiders have transverse ridges on the sternum but lack the sternal excavations that characterize Dysderina and are instead united by the highly modified mouthparts of males: the labium is greatly enlarged, with a dorsoventrally flat, posterior portion that extends far posterior of the anterolateral corners of the sternum, and the endites are each deeply excavated, medially around the sides of the labium and laterally around the base of the palpal trochanter. Dysderina desultrix (Keyserling), from Peru, is transferred to Pseudodysderina and chosen as the type species; its male is described for the first time. This species has been taken by canopy fogging and beating foliage as well as in leaf litter, and appears to be widespread in the Amazonian portions of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. Seven more narrowly distributed new species are described from Peru (P. manu), Bolivia (P. yungas, P. beni), Ecuador (P. hermani), Colombia (P. suiza, P. dracula), and Brazil (P. utinga). The six new species assigned to the new genus Tinadysderina resemble those of Dysderina and Pseudodysderina, but have a much smaller, simpler, weakly sclerotized embolus; they are known only from the western slopes of the Andes in Ecuador (T. tinalandia, T. otonga) and Colombia (T. planada, T. gorgona, T. bremen, T. pereira).

Aposphragisma gen. nov. is placed within the Gamasomorphagroup sensu Saaristo (2001). Descriptions and illustrations are given for all new species. A phylogenetic analysis based on 40 characters using Prethopalpus fosuma, Gamasomorpha asterobothros, G. cataphracta, G. seximpressa, Xestaspis biflocci, X. kandy and X. paulina as outgroup-taxa and Cortestina thaleri (Oonopidae, Sulsulinae) as the root is presented and discussed. Furthermore it is shown that females of Aposphragisma gen. nov. possess complex internal genitalia. The members of the new genus are ground-dwelling litter inhabitants restricted to Southeast Asian lowland and montane forests, with more than 60% of the species only known from single localities. They are presumed to be negatively affected by the massive destruction of pristine forest habitats within their range. This work has been conducted within the framework of the Planetary Biodiversity Inventory (PBI) of Oonopidae (see http://research.amnh.org/oonopidae).

The following species are transferred to Cinetomorpha: C. floridana (Banks), comb. nov., and C. sedata (Gertsch & Mulaik), comb. nov., from Opopaea; C. angela (Chamberlin), comb. nov., and C. nesophila (Chamberlin), comb. nov., from Yumates; and C. patquiana (Birabén) and C. platensis (Birabén), comb. nov., from Gamasomorpha. Gamasomorpha wasmanniae Mello-Leitão and Lucetia distincta Dumitresco & Georgesco are newly synonymized with C. simplex Simon. Two species currently in Gamasomorpha are transferred to Hexapopha Platnick & Berniker: H. brasiliana (Bristowe), comb. nov. and H. m-scripta (Birabén), comb. nov.
