Download or read book Updating the Literary West written by and published by TCU Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 1072 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Western writers," says Thomas J. Lyon in his epilogue to Updating the Literary West, "have grown up with the frontier myth but now find themselves in the early stages of creating a new western myth." The editors of the Literary History of the American West (TCU Press, 1987) hoped that the first volume would begin, not conclude, their exploration of the West's literary heritage. Out of this hope comes Updating the Literary West, a comprehensive reference anthology including essays by over one hundred scholars. A selected bibliography is included with each piece. In the ten years since publication of LHAW, western writing has developed a significantly larger presence in the national literary stream. A variety of cultural viewpoints have developed, along with new tactics for literary study. New authors have risen to prominence, and the range of subjects has changed and widened. Updating the Literary West looks at topics ranging from western classics to cowboys and Cadillacs and considers children's literature, ethnicity, environmental writing, gender issues and other topics in which change has been rapid since publication of LHAW. This volume again affirms the West's literary legitimacy--status hard earned by the Western Literary Association--and the lasting place of popular western writing as part of the growing and changing literary--and American--experience. An excellent reference for a wide range of readers and an invaluable resource for scholars and libraries. Selected list of contributors: James Maguire Fred Erisman Susan J. Rosowski Gerald Haslam Tom Pilkington A. Carl Bredahl Richard Slotkin John G. Cawelti Robert F. Gish Ann Ronald Mick McAllister

Book excerpt: We hadn¿t planned that walk. We had never planned anything. It happened and other times it didn¿t. We had intended just to sit for a while, watch the birds dive or swoop across the surface, but somehow we started to discuss religion and politics, and as always I was the one listening and Karla talked. `I¿m sorry, Lisa. I guess it¿s because I rarely have a chance to talk. When I¿m with him I barely get the chance¿to talk.¿ Somewhere between Heidegger and the role of Lothar Späth in the collapse of the Christian Democrats-led government in one of the Southern states of Germany she told me, that she had recently dreamt of my hair and how much she would like to lift its thick mass off my shoulders, loved to touch its magnificence. I felt good, despite the awkward placement of this compliment, but before I could reply, a `thank you¿ on my lips, she began to talk about Martin and the blown light bulb in the study, which had annoyed him for a couple of days now. `Why don¿t you change it?¿ I said with a smile and was surprised that I had spoken. A love triangle leads to tragedy in this unconventional mystery. The story opens with the death of a woman named Karla. The police and the coroner agree that it was suicide, but suspicion abounds. Two people certainly had motivation to do Karla harm: Martin, her common-law husband, who harbors bitterness over the time he caught Karla in flagrante delicto with another man; and Lisa, a woman with whom Karla was having an affair. The story alternates between Martin's and Lisa's version of events before and after Karla's death. -Kirkus Discoveries

He is Americas most widely translated author (into more than eighty languages), and although his works have been neglected until recently by academic critics in the United States, he is finally winning recognition as a major figure in American literary history. The breadth and depth of new critical study of Londons work in recent decades attest to his newfound respectability. London criticism has moved beyond a traditional concerns of realism and naturalism as well as beyond the timeworn biographical focus to engage such theoretical approaches as race, gender, class, post-structuralism, and new historicism. The range and intellectual energy of the essays collected here give the reader a new sense of Londons richness and variety, especially his treatment of diverse cultures. Having in the past focused more on Londons personal "world, we are now afforded an opportunity to look more closely at his art and the numerous worlds it uncovers.
