Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept—this records the first use of anesthesia—and he took one of the ribs and closed up the flesh. The word “rib” here actually means “side.” The woman is not merely of a rib but actually of one side of man. When God created man, the word “form” was used, which is the same word used of a potter forming clay, but the word “build” here seems to mean God paid even more attention to the creation of woman. God made a formal presentation, in essence, performing the first wedding, thus he instituted the bonds of the marriage covenant, which is actually called the Covenant of God (Proverb 2:17). Indicating that God is the author of this sacred institution, this is the marriage model and was instituted by God—any other model, such as men marrying men and women marrying women, so called, can be constituted as none other than an abomination in the eyes of God. Marriage is honorable between a man and a woman. She is man’s counterpart—not merely in feeling and sense, not merely for his gratification or his flesh but in solid qualities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent inquiries into the concept of the gift have been largely male-dominated and thus have ignored important aspects of the gift from a woman's point of view. In the light of philosophical work by Mauss, Lévi-Strauss, Derrida, and Bataille, Women and the Gift reflects how women respond to the notion of the gift and relationships of giving. This collection evaluates and critiques previous work on the gift and also responds to how women view care, fidelity, generosity, trust, and independence in light of the gift.

Book Synopsis Women, Religion, and the Gift by : Morny Joy
Download or read book Women, Religion, and the Gift written by Morny Joy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the special dynamics of women and their close relationships with the gift in both past and contemporary religious settings. Written from a cross-cultural perspective, it challenges depictions of women’s roles in religion where they have been relegated to compliance with specifically designated gendered attributes. The different chapters contest the resultant stereotypes that deny women agency. Each chapter describes women as engaged in an aspect of religion, from that of ritual specialists, to benefactors and patrons, or even innovators. The volume examines topics such as sainthood and sacrifice so as to refine these ideas in constructive ways that do not devalue women. It also examines the meaning of the term “gift” today, embracing the term in both figurative and literal ways. Such a collection of diverse women’s writings and activities provides a significant contribution to their quest for recognition, and also suggests ways this can be understood and realized today.

In fact, the church has wrestled with varying degrees of evangelical feminism for decades. As evangelical feminism has crept into the church, time-trusted resources like Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood help remind Christians of what the Bible has to say. In this edition of the award-winning best seller, more than 20 influential men and women such as John Piper, Wayne Grudem, D. A. Carson, and Elisabeth Elliot offer thought-provoking essays responding to the challenge egalitarianism poses to life in the church and in the home. Covering topics like role distinctions in the church, how biblical manhood and womanhood should work out in practice, and women in the history of the church, this helpful resource will help readers learn to orient their beliefs with God's unchanging word in an ever-changing culture.
Download or read book The Gift Economy written by David Cheal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently we have known more about gift giving practices in pre-industrial societies than about those of industrial western society. In this book, first published in 1988, David Cheal shows that the process of present giving and receiving is a vital element in contemporary social life, relevant to some of the most important theoretical traditions in sociology, particularly those of Durkheim and Weber, and to the social constructionism of Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann. This volume is the result of a major study of gift rituals carried out by David Cheal and his associates in which general themes are richly illustrated with details from individual case histories gathered during the research. It is highly significant that in western society women are more active gift givers than men and, while their voices explain how emotions and interests are interrelated within the gift economy, the author shows how that in turn is related to current theories about family, gender and religion.
