Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Germans in the United States The history of the Germans in the United States is too comprehensive a subject for a brief sketch. Yet the bare' outlines of a portrait often impress the characteristic features more vividly than color and detail. The history of the Germans in this country goes back to the earliest colonial period. Recurrent waves in the eighteenth were followed by great tides of German immigration in the nineteenth century, and these carried into the population of the United States an element second in amount only to the contribution of the English stock. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany and the United States To be a patriotic American citizen is to be also a friend to democracy and humanity, as well as a strong peace advocate. All such citizens are standing firmly with Pres ident Wilson in the controversy with Germany and thor oughly approve of his demand that she show some respect for international law, cease her attacks on peaceful mer chant vessels and quit assassinating American citizens. It is thought that the crisis that arose over the de struction of the Arabic has passed and there will be a satisfactory settlement of it. The German embassador at Washington has assured the United States government that no more such outrages will occur. If Germany really means to comply with President Wilson's demand, it marks a radical change in the meth ods and conduct of her submarine warfare against Eng land, neutral commerce and against humanity. Her war on the sea, however, differs not at all from her war on land and in the air. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is the influence that the Ameri can aboriginal conditions have had upon European life and thought. This cannot be attributed to any especial period - not the America of to-day, but rather the general idea of primitive ness which the Western Continent has always suggested. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Amerika: A German Reader, American History, Legends and Anecdotes America is the subject of this German reader. Its prepa ration resulted from recent suggestions: the United States Bureau of Education 1 emphasized the importance of the German language for America's economic and scientific de ve10pment; and the editorials of metropolitan newspapers called for new German text-books. It became evident from the latter, that accounts of our own country should pro vide desirable materials for studying the foreign language. The student, beginning to study German, will find here some distinctive advantages. In the American tales appear peoples, customs and atmosphere already more or less familiar to him. The accounts of our life, in the colonial, the frontier and the present times, will appeal to his national feeling. The selections, one and all, have been made to stimulate his interest. Everything should encourage him to concentrate his efiort upon the language. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Germans B., like every other human being, does not carry his heart on his sleeve, and he does not turn out his household gods for the inspection of a stranger. He may be worse, and he may be a great deal better than he seems - Oi that his guest cannot judge with any certainty. Perhaps this sounds very Obvious, but it is sur prising how many people there are who would rightly hesitate to give their opinion on an acquaint ance Of a fortnight's standing, and who are yet ready not only to criticise but to condemn a whole nation on evidence stretching over an equally short period Of time, and based probably on still more superficial observation. This mistake, or whatever you please to call it, is not by any means confined to English people. I suppose it was first brought home to me by an absurd book on England, written by a German after a six weeks' sojourn in my country, during which time he had strayed from one horrible experience to another, under the impression that they were the natural and inevitable experiences Of every one. Of course one is indignant over the consequent criticisms, because they are based on - for us - Obviously false data. But we must remember that in six weeks an honest, painstaking student of national habits and customs can gather together enough perfectly genuine material on which - unless he is blessed with an extra ordinary degree Of tolerance - he will consider himself justified in founding a most condemnatory criticism. I have experienced this, alas! In my own person. A year or two ago I was travelling in England with a German friend. I had been foolish enough to boast to her about the politeness Of our policemen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming German tells the intriguing story of the largest and earliest mass movement of German-speaking immigrants to America. The so-called Palatine migration of 1709 began in the western part of the Holy Roman Empire, where perhaps as many as thirty thousand people left their homes, lured by rumors that Britain's Queen Anne would give them free passage overseas and land in America. They journeyed down the Rhine and eventually made their way to London, where they settled in refugee camps. The rumors of free passage and land proved false, but, in an attempt to clear the camps, the British government finally agreed to send about three thousand of the immigrants to New York in exchange for several years of labor. After their arrival, the Palatines refused to work as indentured servants and eventually settled in autonomous German communities near the Iroquois of central New York.Becoming German tracks the Palatines' travels from Germany to London to New York City and into the frontier areas of New York. Philip Otterness demonstrates that the Palatines cannot be viewed as a cohesive "German" group until after their arrival in America; indeed, they came from dozens of distinct principalities in the Holy Roman Empire. It was only in refusing to assimilate to British colonial culture—instead maintaining separate German-speaking communities and mixing on friendly terms with Native American neighbors—that the Palatines became German in America.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Influence of German Literature in America It is in the nature of things impossible to draw a sharp boundary line between different phases of literary development. It has been deemed advisable, however, to confine these observa tions to a period including and antedating the first quarter of our century. This is a period upon which the historian looks with somewhat unj ustifiable soreness of heart it is the time of plentiful American reprints of the issues of the English press, with but few original contributions of any value. The mournful complaint of the American author of the time about want of encouragement dins in our ears on turning over the pages of long-forgotten American reviews. It was hard for him to realize, or, when realized, to acquiesce in the fact that it was impossible for him to compete with the accepted classics of English literature and the new developments of the end of the last and beginning of the new century. A literary movement, however, cannot be made to order, and we do well to derive some satisfaction from the fact that the American public, with much trash, read much that was valuable, even though not a native product. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Political Refugees in the United States During the Period From 1815-1860 It would be a misapprehension of the situation if one were to infer from this lack of direct and Open influence that our national development was in no wise affected by the presence of so large a number of Germans. The. Mere com mingling of races must of necessity have had its indirect and physiological effects. Moreover, in the economic condition of the country, the German, and in particu lar the German farmer, began at an early date to teach by his example better methods to his neighbor of different stock. But these influences, exercised unconsciously, are hard to trace in detail, and could not have prevented the Ger man element from disappearing without leaving vestiges that history can record with any degree of precision. It was not till the political refugees began to furnish officers to the Teutonic host that the Germans began to play a perceptible part in the struggles of American life.
