Early in the decade the Ottoman Empire posed a grave threat to the West, and later competing national interests led the French, the English, and the Dutch to become embroiled in military confl ict. As people sought to keep abreast of current events, broadsheets constituted one of the most important sources of news. Reproduced in this volume are 450 sheets drawn from over 80 collections in 15 countries for the period from 1662 to 1670. The majority of this material is extremely rare, and very few of the sheets have been reproduced since the original printing in the seventeenth century. Book Synopsis Crossing Borders, Crossing Cultures by : Massimo Rospocher
Download or read book Crossing Borders, Crossing Cultures written by Massimo Rospocher and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the challenges and possibilities of research into the European dimensions of popular print culture. Popular print culture has traditionally been studied with a national focus. Recent research has revealed, however, that popular print culture has many European dimensions and shared features. A group of specialists in the field has started to explore the possibilities and challenges of research on a wide, European scale. This volume contains the first overview and analysis of the different approaches, methodologies and sources that will stimulate and facilitate future comparative research. This volume first addresses the benefits of a media-driven approach, focussing on processes of content recycling, interactions between text and image, processes of production and consumption. A second perspective illuminates the distribution and markets for popular print, discussing audiences, prices and collections. A third dimension refers to the transnational dimensions of genres, stories, and narratives. A last perspective unravels the communicative strategies and dynamics behind European bestsellers. This book is a source of inspiration for everyone who is interested in research into transnational cultural exchange and in the fascinating history of popular print culture in Europe.
Book Synopsis A Divided Hungary in Europe by : Gábor Almási
Download or read book A Divided Hungary in Europe written by Gábor Almási and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite fragmentation, heterogeneity and the continuous pressure of the Ottoman Empire, early modern “divided Hungary” witnessed a surprising cultural flourishing in the sixteenth century, and maintained its common cultural identity in the seventeenth century. This could hardly have been possible without intense exchange with the rest of Europe. This three-volume series about early modern Hungary divided by Ottoman presence approaches themes of exchange of information and knowledge from two perspectives, namely, exchange through traditional channels provided by religious/educational institutions and the system of European study tours (Volume 1 – Study Tours and Intellectual-Religious Relationships), and the less regular channels and improvised networks of political diplomacy (Volume 2 – Diplomacy, Information Flow and Cultural Exchange). A by-product of this exchange of information was the changing image of early modern Hungary and Transylvania, which is presented in the third and in some aspects concluding volume of essays (Volume 3 – The Making and Uses of the Image of Hungary and Transylvania). Unlike earlier approaches to the same questions, these volumes draw an alternative map of early modern Hungary. On this map, the centre-periphery conceptions of European early modern culture are replaced by new narratives written from the perspective of historical actors, and the dominance of Western-Hungarian relationships is kept in balance due to the significance of Hungary’s direct neighbours, most importantly the Ottoman Empire.

It contains extensive indexes that offer researchers and general readers alike immediate access to the various historical introductions and the more than 5,000 reproductions in the previous thirteen volumes: titles, historical figures, places, subjects, authors, artists, printers/publishers, and places of printing. In addition, there are concordances to other works with a significant number of reproduced broadsheets, and a select bibliography of books and articles useful for additional research. The entire edition, the first volume of which appeared in 1985, includes primary historical material on the broad spectrum of political activity in the seventeenth century, with extensive coverage of such topics as the Thirty Year's War, the English civil war, the wars of Louis XIV, and the Ottoman siege of Vienna (1683), all of which offers modern readers an opportunity to understand the interests and concerns of early modern readers. It offers a unique way of understanding the political and social context in which events of major historical importance in the seventeenth century took place.
