Book excerpt: This is the story of two young people who fell in love, married, and in the course of their military travels, conceived three children, two sons, Earl Jr., and Kevin, and a daughter, Royce Renay. This is also the story of the failure of that marriage after eighteen years, and how the parties involved, Barbara Ann and Earl Dennison Woods continued on with their separate lives. Earl soon remarried and father another child (Eldrick) who would later come to be known as "Tiger" Woods. Meanwhile, Barbara, in the role of single parent, continued with the raising of her three children. If one family gradually came to feel that it was living in the shadow of the other, this is simply the nature of things. Lacking the celebrated talents that Tiger later became noted for, Earl's first family soon found it difficult, even impossible to compete for their father's quality time and attention. Although their mother did what she could to keep them from feeling sacrificed or forgotten, there are still mental and psychological scars resulting from their unfulfilled needs when they were young, vulnerable and also, highly impressionable. Certainly, there is no resentment over Tiger's success, but great sadness remains over the manner in which one family was compromised for another.

Book excerpt: Brimming with mystery and treasure, this action-packed tale sends a boy in need of luck and girl in need of a friend on an adventure that will change their lives forever. Meet George, the third Lord of Devonshire and the unluckiest boy in London. Why is George so unlucky? First, he's an orphan. Second, unless he sells everything, he's about to lose his house. So when his family's last heirloom, a priceless map to the Star of Victory (a unique gem said to bring its owner success in any battle) is stolen by a nefarious group of criminals, George knows that there is no one less lucky--or more alone--than he is. That is until Ada Byron, the future Countess of Lovelace, bursts into his life. She promises to help George recover his family legacy, and is determined to find her own father along the way--all in a flying machine she built herself. Joined by a mischievous orangutan and the long-lost son of an infamous pirate, Ada and George take off on a cross-continent journey through the skies that will change their lives, and perhaps the world, forever.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER. SEMI-FINALIST FOR THE PEN/DIAMONSTEIN-SPIELVOGEL AWARD FOR ART OF THE ESSAY. One of Amazon, Buzzfeed, ELLE, Electric Literature and Pop Sugar's Best Books of 2018. Named one of the Best Books of October and Fall by Amazon, Buzzfeed, TIME, Vulture, The Millions and Vol. 1 Brooklyn. “Hilarious, nimble, and thoroughly illuminating.” —Colson Whitehead, author of The Underground Railroad A globe-spanning, ambitious book of essays from one of the most enthralling storytellers in narrative nonfiction In his highly anticipated debut essay collection, Impossible Owls, Brian Phillips demonstrates why he’s one of the most iconoclastic journalists of the digital age, beloved for his ambitious, off-kilter, meticulously reported essays that read like novels. The eight essays assembled here—five from Phillips’s Grantland and MTV days, and three new pieces—go beyond simply chronicling some of the modern world’s most uncanny, unbelievable, and spectacular oddities (though they do that, too). Researched for months and even years on end, they explore the interconnectedness of the globalized world, the consequences of history, the power of myth, and the ways people attempt to find meaning. He searches for tigers in India, and uncovers a multigenerational mystery involving an oil tycoon and his niece turned stepdaughter turned wife in the Oklahoma town where he grew up. Through each adventure, Phillips’s remarkable voice becomes a character itself—full of verve, rich with offhanded humor, and revealing unexpected vulnerability. Dogged, self-aware, and radiating a contagious enthusiasm for his subjects, Phillips is an exhilarating guide to the confusion and wonder of the world today. If John Jeremiah Sullivan’s Pulphead was the last great collection of New Journalism from the print era, Impossible Owls is the first of the digital age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of selected texts of British writings on Indian wildlife published between 1860 and 1960. Set in the context of British colonial rule in India, this book also reflects on similar situations across the British Empire and other colonial empires. The destruction of wildlife in the making of empires is a subject not yet fully explored in scholarship. This book aims to speak to global concerns regarding the extinction of several species and shows that the crisis has international roots. The Inhuman Empire breaks new grounds as it juxtaposes colonial narratives to folk narratives. These two types of narratives treat nonhuman animals very differently – folk narrative considers them sentient beings, while colonial narratives see them as ‘game’ and do not care for their sentience. Both types of narratives are further evaluated with reference to the contemporary position of natural sciences regarding animal sentience and of anthropologists and philosophers regarding the relationship between nature and culture. Analyzing colonial accounts of hunting, the author looks at the pain and suffering of nonhuman animals and combines statistics alongside narratives of British writers, Indian populace and nonhuman animals in order to show narratives' reflect and impact reality. This book will be of great value to those interested in Animal Studies, Folkloristics, the history of Colonialism and India.

Book excerpt: In this autobiographical account of life in Seoul just before the March First uprising in 1919 and exile in Shanghai afterwards, Peter Hyun vividly describes what it was like to grow up in an occupied Korea subjected to Japanese colonial rule. The son of a member of the Korean Provisional Government in Exile, Hyun presents an intimate portrait of that small band of Korean revolutionaries who kept alive the hope of Korean independence. They have been all but forgotten or ignored, and their story, told by an eyewitness, represents a valubale historical record. At the heart of the story are the author's father, the patriot Reverend Soon Hyun, and his mother, Maria Hyun, an extraordinary woman of courage and integrity.
