Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis of the Massachusetts Town, and the Development of Town-Meeting Government England, I found absolutely nothing in the case of this town (braintree) to support the theories referred to. While nu doubtedly, as Mr. Freeman has observed in another connec tion, the institutions of every one of the older Massachusetts towns are part of the general institutions of the English people, as those again are part of the general institutions of the Teutonic race, and those are again part of the general institu tions of the whole Aryan family yet, while a general re semblance, however striking, is in itself no evidence of descent, it is easy to give altogether too great weight to simili tudes and analogies. In approaching an investigation of this sort, therefore, it is well to bear in mind a remark of Sir Henry Maine in his first lecture on Village Communities, that it is the characteristic error of the direct observer of nu familiar social or juridical phenomena: to compare them too hastily with familiar phenomena apparently of the same kind; and Sir Henry further adds that the greatest cau tion must be observed in all speculations on the inferences derivable from parallel usages. But while the Braintree records afforded no support to re mote genetic theories, the examination of them soon made it apparent that, for reasons presently to be stated, Braintree was not one of the towns in the history of which the subject could be advantageously studied. It was equally clear that it could be studied only in the original records of some properly selected towns; for the indications all were that the advo cates of remote descent had fallen into the not uncommon error of looking too far afield for that which was in fact close at hand. Accordingly, in order to secure a sufficiently wide basis for generalization, I examined the original records, church as well as town, of Hingham, Weymouth, Dorchester, Ded ham, and Cambridge, as well as those of Boston. All of the towns named, organized prior to 1636, are among the original Massachusetts towns; and the evidence on the subject of the genesis of the town and town-meeting government, to be de rived from their records, it is the object of this paper to set forth in detail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Harvard Massachusetts: 1732-1893 My Dear Sir: - For many years it has been my ardent desire to see written a history of Harvard - my native town - beginning with the period when the Indians first saw the smoke ascending from the hearth-fires of the white men in the Nashaway Valley and coming down to modern times. In no part of our country were the pioneers beset by greater trials, toil and danger than in New England; and probably none suffered more than those who lived within sight of Wachusett. The little colony at Lancaster was for many years constantly menaced by savage foes, and as the larger portion of Harvard was originally included in Lancaster, she shared the same experiences. The tale of the perils and sacrifices and the many thrilling incidents in the lives of her founders should be so woven into the story that the student may readily comprehend what hardships the brave men and women of that day endured, to secure for themselves and their posterity civil and religious liberty and the many blessings which attach to home in a civilized land. The town of Harvard was made up of sundry tracts from other towns, and if these can be so mapped as to represent the manner of their combination into the present harmonious whole, it would be "a consummation devoutly to be wished." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Hadley: A Story of the Making of a Famous Massachusetts Town Ove of one's own town is one of the dominant motives underlying good citizenship. The ori gin, growth, and development of a typical New England town, covering two centuries and a half, is a theme on which any thoughtful person may profitably dwell. In these busy days, however, few people have the time necessary to read a ponderous volume. For the many rather than the few this little book has been written. The lands of the early settlers of Hadley are pass ing into the possession of the children of aliens, and the town-meeting, church, school, and homes are for these strangers to control. This book is for these also, that they may be imbued with the spirit of those mighty souls, which remains still potent enough to make Americans out of Europeans, even as in 177 6 it made patriots and freemen out of the subjects of King George. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Origin of the Town of Clinton, Massachusetts: 1653 1865 This volume had its origin in some work on local history done in the Clinton High School in the years 1886 and 1887. The researches then begun by the author were continued at intervals, until such a'mass of material had been gathered that some gentlemen, who had examined it, deemed that it was worthy of publication. The matter was brought before the town at a meeting held December 12, 1893, under an article: To see if the town will take any preliminary steps toward the publication of a town history, or act in any way relating thereto. It was voted to refer the subject matter of the article to the Directors of the Bigelow freepublic Library, and that they report at a future meeting. The report of this committee was made to the town June 22, 1895, and in accordance with its recommendation, it was voted to purchase the manuscript of A. E. Ford, and that the town appropriate the sum of five hundred dollars therefor. Two thousand dollars were subsequently appropriated to defray the expense of publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Argument Made Before a Joint Committee of the Legislature of Massachusetts, May 17, 1869, Against the Establishment of a State Police in the City of Boston Now New England government is this: Each town manages its own local affairs. The people of the town meet in town meeting, - in many places in a hall not larger than this, * as the members of the committee know, and there freely discuss and decide all questions of local government, -decide what taxes they shall lay, what schoolhouses they shall build, whether they Shall do this or that; and there annually elect all town officers, including constables. The town-meeting has been very properly called the nursery of American statesmen; and one of the most distinguished, thoughtful and critical political philosophers has pointed out that, whatever may be the drawbacks of New Eng land institutions, the town governments do create good citizens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Episodes of Massachusetts History, Vol. 1: The Settlement of Boston Bay, the Antinomian Controversy, a Study Od Church and Town Government Fiity years ago, the late Richard Frothingham undertook to write a history of Charlestown. The book was published in numbers, which appeared with sufficient regularity until the narrative reached the eventful 17th of June, 1775. The author then found himself irresistibly drawn from the smaller to the larger field, and the History of the Siege of Boston superseded the History of Charlestown, which remains to this day unfinished. Eighteen years ago, the town of vveymouth had occasion to celebrate the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of its settlement, and I was invited to de liver an historical address in commemoration of the event. In preparing it, my attention was first drawn to the early settlement of the region about Boston Bay; the rest naturally followed, and step by step I found myself drawn into 'a study of the history of the town in which I lived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Weston: Massachusetts, 1630-1890 It is scarcely a debatable question, in the opinion of the writer of these lines, as to whether this or any other town history is worth writing and publishing. The story of any town is worth telling, and the story of any man's life is worth narrating, either briefly or at length. So, when requested to edit this History of the Town of Weston by the late Colonel Daniel S. Lamson, I was glad to address myself to the task of getting the manuscript into shape and seeing it through the press. In these annals of a quiet neighborhood and these outlines of homely but strong and sturdy lives, the good colonel has limned for us, with praiseworthy toil and zeal, many a pleasant little sketch of scenes in the past life of Weston. His work is meritorious for its graphic anecdotes, its annals of the church and of the town meetings, and especially for its full account of Weston in the Revolution, and for its pronounced patriotic tone throughout. Such features of the work as the description of the grand wagon-freight routes from the North to the South along the coast and paralleling the Alleghany Range in the days before railroads; of the farmer-lads' wagon-freighting of wood to Boston from far New Hampshire and Vermont; or of the great trunk stage-road between Boston and New York which passed through Weston, the logical results thereof being visits to the town by Presidents Washington and Adams, events upon which the citizens prided themselves not a little, - these things, including minute accounts of the schools and of the business enterprises of the community, arc interesting reading and cheer one's way through the dryer details. I take it that the latter arc not intended for consecutive reading at all, but for consultation or peeping into on rainy days when the mood serves. In other words, a town history is, to a large extent at least, a reference book, however interesting it may be. And how, then, do our ancestors look to us? What is the verdict on them? Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Town of Fitchburg, Massachusetts The writer has been induced to undertake the present work by a desire to save from the oblivion to which they were hastening, some of the events connected with the history of this town. Many of these are treasured up in the memories of a few aged people, and must, in the course of nature. Soon be inevitably lost, if not preserved in a connected and tangible form. Though the number of these relics of other days is now small, much information has been derived from them, and much more might have been obtained, had inquiries been commenced a few years earlier. The writer has had full access to the proprietors' books, and to the town records of Lunenburg and Fitchburg. Oral and written informa tion has been furnished with the utmost cheerfulness, by all those in possession of facts worthy of note. The labors of another who has preceded me in this department, have made my path one of compara tive ease.
