Book excerpt: "The Gaslighting Epidemic Series: From Personal Betrayal to Societal Deceit" is a compelling two-in-one volume that brings together the critical insights of John D. Kody's "The Gaslighting Trap: Understanding and Overcoming Emotional Abuse" and Michael Brooks' "The Gaslighting of America: How the Elite, the Authorities and Mainstream Media Have Conspired to Deceive the People." This series stands as a testament to the pervasive nature of gaslighting, spanning the intimate corridors of personal relationships to the broad avenues of societal influence. In the first part of the series, adapted from John D. Kody's work, readers are immersed in the personal impact of gaslighting in relationships. It navigates the emotional complexities of manipulation, unraveling how individuals are led to question their own reality under the influence of a manipulative partner. This section provides an in-depth analysis of the dynamics within intimate betrayals and offers practical strategies for identifying, confronting, and healing from these experiences. The second part, building upon Michael Brooks' insights, shifts the focus to the broader societal implications of gaslighting. It exposes how elites, authorities, and the media use psychological manipulation to craft a false reality, influencing public perception and eroding the foundations of society. This section critically examines the systemic use of gaslighting to manipulate and control public discourse, reshaping societal norms and values. Together, these two parts form a comprehensive exploration of gaslighting's impact, both in the intimate sphere of personal relationships and the expansive realm of societal structures. The series educates readers on the multifaceted nature of this manipulation and empowers them with the knowledge and tools necessary to recognize and resist it in all forms. "The Gaslighting Epidemic Series: From Personal Betrayal to Societal Deceit" is an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of psychological manipulation. Whether navigating personal relationships or deciphering societal narratives, this series serves as a guide to uncovering truth and fostering authenticity in a world riddled with deception.

Your husband crosses the line in his flirtations with another woman at a dinner party. When you confront him, he asks you to stop being insecure and controlling. After a long argument, you apologize for giving him a hard time. Your mother belittles your clothes, your job, and your boyfriend. But instead of fighting back, you wonder if your mother is right and figure that a mature person should be able to take a little criticism. If you think things like this can’t happen to you, think again. Gaslighting is an insidious form of emotional abuse and manipulation that is difficult to recognize and even harder to break free from. Are you being gaslighted? Check for these telltale signs: 1) Does your opinion of yourself change according to approval or disapproval from your spouse? 2) When your boss praises you, do you feel as if you could conquer the world? 3) Do you dread having small things go wrong at home—buying the wrong brand of toothpaste, not having dinner ready on time, a mistaken appointment written on the calendar? 4) Do you have trouble making simple decisions and constantly second guess yourself? 5) Do you frequently make excuses for your partner's behavior to your family and friends? 6) Do you feel hopeless and joyless?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the nineteenth century, cholera was a global scourge against human populations. Practitioners had little success in mitigating the symptoms of the disease, and its causes were bitterly disputed. What experts did agree on was that the environment played a crucial role in the sites where outbreaks occurred. In this book, Michael Zeheter offers a probing case study of the environmental changes made to fight cholera in two markedly different British colonies: Madras in India and Quebec City in Canada. The colonial state in Quebec aimed to emulate British precedent and develop similar institutions that allowed authorities to prevent cholera by imposing quarantines and controlling the disease through comprehensive change to the urban environment and sanitary improvements. In Madras, however, the provincial government sought to exploit the colony for profit and was reluctant to commit its resources to measures against cholera that would alienate the city's inhabitants. It was only in 1857, after concern rose in Britain over the health of its troops in India, that a civilizing mission of sanitary improvement was begun. As Zeheter shows, complex political and economic factors came to bear on the reshaping of each colony's environment and the urgency placed on disease control.

Book excerpt: How survivors of the Covid-19 pandemic battling long-term disabling conditions are fighting for recognition and research—and helping to transform healthcare for many overlooked diseases. To the world’s public health authorities, Covid-19 would be either a deadly disease for some or a simple respiratory illness for most, its symptoms clearing up in just a matter of weeks. But then tens of millions around the world got sick and stayed sick. With scientists and doctors caught off guard, these Long Covid patients often found solace only with one another, organizing support groups across oceans and continents while ill in bed. In The Long Haul, CNN journalist Ryan Prior weaves his own life, the stories of activist patients, and the latest science into a captivating tale of regular people crying out for care that actually works. What Covid “long haulers” found was that their new illness was not so new. In fact, it resembled other post-viral syndromes: difficult to treat and neglected by science. In riveting and accessible prose, Prior follows an innovative band of patients who took matters into their own hands and researched the disease themselves, thereby flipping the script and illustrating a new paradigm for research. In these unprecedented times, the CDC and the WHO came to them. As Covid continues to circulate, its long-term effects could grow as well, weighing on the healthcare system for decades to come. But, as Prior shows, getting Long Covid treatments right could help revolutionize care for all complex and chronic illnesses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the structural features of enduring social inequality in the US and other settler colonial societies. In it, philosopher Elena Ruíz tells the story of how epistemic techniques and conceptual schemes developed in antiquity to support the accumulation of wealth generated by the industrial slave system formed the backbone of the colonial project in the Americas. The book traces how these techniques developed through colonial occupation and into the 21st century, and how they affected gender-based violence. Ruíz uses insights from anticolonial thinkers and systems theory to give an account of today's social oppressions as built into the design of settler colonial social structures and portrays the self-repairing and intentional features of structural violence as central to the ecosystems of impunity in which systemic racism and gendered violence emerge.
