Book Synopsis The Game of the Chesse (Classic Reprint) by : William Caxton
Download or read book The Game of the Chesse (Classic Reprint) written by William Caxton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game of the Chesse That Caxton used separate types for the productions of his Press, from the first, is undoubted; as also is the fact that they were of metal, and that the metal was cast in blocks ready to receive the letter from the hand of the engraver; but that each letter was so cut separately, is easily established by observing that throughout any book printed with these types, no two letters can be found exactly alike; whereas, if cast from a matrix, each perfect type must have been a facsimile of all the others, instead of having a mere family likeness. Now I find IO much difference in the earlier works of Caxton, that I am disposed to think each work had, if not altogether new type, at least a very large pmportion recut. Book Synopsis The Game and Playe of the Chesse by : William Caxton
Download or read book The Game and Playe of the Chesse written by William Caxton and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its title, Caxton's Game and Playe of the Chesse does not, in fact, have much to say about a game or about playing it ... Instead, the work uses the chessboard and its pieces to allegorize a political community whose citizens contribute to the common good. Readers first meet the king, queen, bishops (imagined as judges), knights, and rooks, here depicted as the king's emissaries. They are then introduced to the eight different pawns, who represent trades that range from farmers to messengers ... Paired with each profession is a list of moral codes ... These pairings reinforce the idea of a kingdom organized around professional ties and associations, ties that are in turn regulated by moral law. - from the Introduction
