Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gambler, a short novel, or novella, was published in 1867. Dostoevsky wrote to the book in order to pay off his own gambling debts. He was under such pressure to pay off the debts that he dictated to the book to a shorthand student in less than a month. The shorthand student became his second wife. The story is told in the first person; the narrator is Alexei Ivanovich, a tutor for the family of a Russian general. They are staying at a resort in Germany. Alexei is in love with the generals stepdaughter, Polina. After he swears his undying love for her, and offers to do anything she wishes, Polina asks him to go to a casino and place a bet for her. Unbeknownst to Alexei, Polina's stepfather is in dire financial straits. He finally agrees and ends up winning at the roulette table. This was Alexei's first experience with gambling.

Book excerpt: I loved this book. Im not sure that any book entitled Gambling Psychology would include a better profile of the psychopathology that is gambling addiction. The main characters massochism is also a wonderful case study of how such personalities operate and function. The plot is excellent and granny is so perfectly described that its as if the author included a photograph of her. Much of the Russian psyche is on display and the reader will get a glimpse into people and lifestyles that are quite in keeping with what one might find today in our own Roulettenberg, Las Vegas. This was a concise but pleasant ride through human nature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Friend of the Family and the Gambler I confess I approach the introduction of this new character with all the solemnity I can command. This personage is destined to play a prominent part in the present story; readers shall judge for themselves how far worthy of their attention the character of this great man may be. Thomas Tomich entered the general's household in the humble capacity of a hanger-ou; he received his board and lodgings for services rendered. The secret as to whence he came is hidden in the mist of Obscurity. However, I made inquiries long after and did learn a few details of the career of this most remarkable man. It was said that he had served in some office, and had been a victim to the cause of Right - Of course I It was said, more over, that he had had something to do with literature in Moscow - and why not P his crass ignorance certainly need not have stood in the way of that line of employment! However, all that 13 known for certain is, that nothing came of his literary efforts, and that he was obliged to enter the general's service in the capacity of reader and martyr. There was no humiliation which he would not put up with for a bit of the general's bread. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gambler, and Other Stories At dinner the Frenchman gave himself airs in an extra ordinary way; he was nonchalant and majestic with everyone. In Moscow, I remember, he used to blow soap bubbles. He talked a great deal about finance and Russian politics. The General sometimes ventured to contradict, but discreetly, and only so far as he could without too great loss Of dignity. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
