Book Synopsis Art in Action by : Natural World Museum
Download or read book Art in Action written by Natural World Museum and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the environmental realm, science and art are inextricably linked. While science determines how we measure the health of our planet, art allows us to visualize our relationship to the natural world. In 'Art of Action', seventy-nine artists share their stories and work to paint a portrait of our natural world today and the potential pathways - both positive and negative - we may follow from here. Their art expresses appreciation for all species and landscapes and explores our natural world lost, mourned and reconstructed. It described the fantasy of paradises new and vanished. Each chapter asks us to celebrate, reflect, interact, protect and act, demonstrating the diversity of life and the legacy that the next generation will inherit. No book can change the natural world. But these stories and photographs can build awareness, the first critical step in changing our collective paradigm from one that exploits and destroys nature to one that nurtures and values our environment.

Book Synopsis Direct from Nature by : Janice Tolhurst Driesbach
Download or read book Direct from Nature written by Janice Tolhurst Driesbach and published by Yosemite Conservancy. This book was released on 1997 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his time, Thomas Hill, a British-born painter who worked extensively in the American West during the second half of the nineteenth century, earned favorable comparison with Albert Bierstadt in the East Coast press, and received highest honors for landscape painting at the Philadelphia Centennial. By the late 1860s, his monumental canvases of Yosemite commanded five thousand dollars apiece and attracted national critical acclaim. Hill is generally associated with those paintings of Yosemite and other grand landscapes and his The Driving of the Last Spike. These large-scale compositions, however, incompletely represent Thomas Hill's talents and enthusiams. Some of the artist's finest achievements are realized in smaller paintings, classified as oil sketches, of subjects as diverse as Newport, Rhode Island, Lake Tahoe in California, and the Pacific Northwest. These modest works attest to Hill's powers of observation, his abilities to render immediate descriptions of his subjects, and his enchantment with his motifs. Oil sketches - usually made on board or paper and under sixteen-by-twenty inches - comprise a significant portion of Thomas Hill's work. Spontaneously executed, they capture the artist's direct responses to nature. As a body they offer immediacy and visual delight, as well as insights into the artist's broad interests and the cultural context in which he worked. And because they represent, in many cases, the only surveying evidence of larger-scale paintings made from them, the oil sketches are key to documenting Hill's career. - excerpted from the essay by Janice T. Driesbach. -- from front cover flap.

Download or read book Drawn to Nature written by Simon Martin and published by Pallant House Gallery. This book was released on 2022-01-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural world as seen through the eyes of British artists including Eric Ravilious, Clare Leighton, and John Piper Since its publication in 1789, Gilbert White's Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne has inspired generations of artists, writers and naturalists. From Thomas Bewick to Eric Ravilious and Clare Leighton, many artists' depictions of animals, birds and wildlife have illustrated White's celebrated book, together providing a microcosm of natural history illustration from the eighteenth century until today. In Drawn to Nature, Simon Martin has gathered joyful and beautiful images of the extraordinary array of wildlife described by White, providing an insight into the continuing appeal and relevance of the Natural History. This fascinating account takes us from some of the earliest published depictions of birds and animals, to pioneering nature photography, the revival of wood-engraving in the 1920s and 30s, and responses to White's message about the natural world by contemporary illustrators such as Angie Lewin and Emily Sutton. The book also includes an introduction to the life of Gilbert White by Sir David Attenborough, an essay by Virginia Woolf, poems by modern and contemporary poets, and a jacket design by Mark Hearld.
