Book excerpt: I will give an overview of the status, early data, and results from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Explorer Mission launched in April 2003. GALEX is performing the first space UV sky-survey, including imaging and grism surveys in two bands (1350-1800 Å and 1800-2800 Å). I will show that GALEX UV traces star formation in a wide range of physical environments. I will present preliminary results of the local star formation distribution, the history of star formation in galaxies, and the starburst history of galaxies. Finally, I will present a selection of results derived from the new UV view of the universe provided by GALEX.

In October 2003, over 170 astronomers from 15 countries met for a 4-day workshop to extensively illustrate and discuss all major observational projects and ongoing theoretical efforts to model galaxy formation and evolution. High resolution spectroscopy of extremely faint objects has enabled the study of the kinematic evolution and, hence, the mass assembly of galaxies to unprecedented look-back times for direct comparison with cosmological structure formation scenarios. Thus, it is now possible to study all three aspects of galaxy evolution - their morphological-dynamical, chemical and spectral evolution out to redshift larger than six, exploring more than 95% of the age of the universe. These Proceedings of the IAU Symposium 235 report the considerable progress made in recent years on galaxy formation and evolution, and look forward to the expected breakthroughs in the domain of remote galaxies, with ALMA, the ELT and the next generation space telescopes.

The IUE spacecraft was launched on the 26th of January in 1978 into a geosynchronous orbit over the Atlantic Ocean. The scientific operations of the IUE are performed for 16 hours a day from Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, U.S.A, and for 8 hours a day from ESA Villafranca Satellite Tracking Station near Madrid, Spain.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the stellar disk evolution and gas disk turbulence of the most numerous galaxies in the local Universe – the dwarf galaxies. The “outside-in” disk shrinking mode was established for a relatively large sample of dwarf galaxies for the first time, and this is in contrast to the “inside-out” disk growth mode found for spiral galaxies. Double exponential brightness profiles also correspond to double exponential stellar mass profiles for dwarf galaxies, which is again different from most spiral galaxies. The cool gas distribution in dwarf galaxies was probed with the spatial power spectra of hydrogen iodide (HI) gas emission, and provided indirect evidence that inner disks of dwarf galaxies have proportionally more cool gas than outer disks. The finding that no correlation exists between gas power spectral indices and star formation gave important constraints on the relation between turbulence and star formation in dwarf galaxies.
