Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers various topics in relativistic rocket flight using undergraduate engineering and physics curriculum levels of mathematics. The mathematics is fairly straight forward however the procedural aspects of the space travel methods cover herein are complex in nature thus meriting the inclusion of the word "Advanced" in the book title. Some of the concepts covered within this book may at first seem counter-intuitive. However, the reader is asked to keep an open mind in reading the subject content while being reassured that I am aware of the caveats for the respective proposed relativistic rocket applications. In fact, I have put much focus on listing and describing the caveats for the systems to work if for no other purpose than the reassure the reader of the rationality and credibility of the specific plausibility arguments provided herein. The book is largely devoid of any mention of still unverified extraterrestrial persons and other similar concepts which might otherwise detract from the scientific soundness of the plausibility arguments provided herein. Neologisms and related New Age diatribe types of pseudo-scientific prose are absent from the book. This is not to imply that I as the author am not open minded to currently unverified physical theories and the possibility of extraterrestrial civilizations suffice it to say that in order to appeal to the broader scientific and engineering community as well as the intelligent lay-person, I saw the need to completely avoid such hard to explain and verify conceptualizations. This book focuses on procedurally advanced relativistic rocket concepts with an eye toward extremely special relativistic systems that may enable travel on the galactic scale within the Milky Way Galaxy and further abroad. Most books and papers on proposed interstellar travel mechanisms either focus on extremely speculative concepts such as wormhole travel, warp drive, tachyonic or faster than light inertial travel, time travel and the like; or focus instead on systems that are mildly relativistic usually with poor acceleration performance. This book delves into some little charted territory by proposing mechanisms that may enable travel velocities in some cases almost indistinguishable from the speed of light in vacuu thereby enabling crew members from our cosmic era to travel truly cosmic distances in space and forward in time while alive and awake. In some scenarios, such extreme special relativistic inertial systems are argued as having merit over any future possibilities for wormhole travel, warp drive, and the like.

Book excerpt: The Origins Billions Star Survey is a mission concept addressing the astrophysics of extrasolar planets, Galactic structure, the Galactic halo and tidal streams, the Local Group and local supercluster of galaxies, dark matter, star formation, open clusters, the solar system, and the celestial reference frame by determining the position, parallax, and proper motion, as well as photometry, for billions of stars down to 23rd visual magnitude. It is capable of surveying the entire celestial sphere or dwelling on a star field by varying the cadence of observations. The mission's ability to measure objects fainter than 17th magnitude allows a large number of extragalactic compact objects to be observed, making the astrometric measurements absolute. The project mission accuracy is comparable to Gaia for a survey mission. Improved accuracy can be achieved by dwelling on a particular star field or by using the Gaia positions at 14th magnitude to improve the positions of objects at the 18th-23rd visual magnitudes.

Starting with the description of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, this cogently written textbook introduces the reader to the astronomy of galaxies, their structure, active galactic nuclei, evolution and large scale distribution in the Universe. After an extensive and thorough introduction to modern observational and theoretical cosmology, the focus turns to the formation of structures and astronomical objects in the early Universe. The basics of classical astronomy and stellar astrophysics needed for extragalactic astronomy are provided in the appendix. While this book has grown out of introductory university courses on astronomy and astrophysics and includes a set of problems and solutions, it will not only benefit undergraduate students and lecturers; thanks to the comprehensive coverage of the field, even graduate students and researchers specializing in related fields will appreciate it as a valuable reference work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectacular images of galaxy collisions capture the imagination. This book will show what is out there in the universe, what it’s like in other galaxies, what they might look like, and how cosmic processes might affect life in other solar systems. It will explain crucial stages in the development of physical structure in the universe, and the effect of galaxy scale processes. Professor Struck will explore all the issues surrounding galaxy collisions. He will begin with a brief broad review of the background on galaxies, the history of their discovery, and how this has been driven by steadily improving technology. Chapters 2 gives details of the early stages of different types of galaxy collision - Rings of Fire, Tidal Swings and Retrograde and Sideways Reels - while Chapter 3 describes collisions between galaxies of very different masses: minor merger or dwarf destruction. Chapter 4 covers ultra-luminous infrared galaxies and major mergers and Chapter 5 briefly examines the techniques used for computer simulation results and how increasing computer capacity has affected the development of this field. The following chapter looks at understanding the physical processes of triggered star formation and nuclear activity. Chapters 7-9 look at the broader view of cosmological structure growth which determines the environment and conditions in which galaxy collisions occur. In the densest environments, this process repeats itself on the larger scale of galaxy clusters. The concluding chapter considers what a galaxy collision looks like from a solar system like ours. Although the galaxy is completely restructured and the night sky view would change greatly over the course of several hundred million years, the direct effects on our planet would be few and infrequent, with only a small probability of being truly catastrophic. These issues will be explored along with the ideas that galaxies must reach a certain evolutionary "maturity" before they can even form solar systems, and that there are habitable zones within galaxies. Thus, galaxy scale processes, like collisions, can determine the fate of life on Earth-like planets.

Book excerpt: The mission was simple—race to the mayday coordinates, rescue his best friend, and bring him home. But, like so much in Ethan’s life, simplicity is a luxury beyond his reach. He’s long been used to the untethered insanity of life as an Explorer, but never has he failed this badly. Never has the soulless void taken his credibility and someone he loved. Space had never broken him. Until now. At twenty-two with a promising career, an enviable piloting record, and the freedom to go anywhere in the universe, Ethan Ryker should have everything he could possibly want. Except he’s just lost the one person who grounded him and made the unbearable loneliness of endless space tolerable. More alone than he’s ever been, he’s now trapped on the starbase Eltanin, suffering through the grief and mental trauma that’s robbed him of the authorization to pilot a starcruiser. Even worse, he’s been assigned a partner he doesn’t like, can’t relate to, and doesn’t want invading his personal life. The LIAM program is supposed to help pilots just like him cope with loss and stress, but all Ethan wants to do is get back in his cruiser and leave all his issues behind. Too bad running away from his problems isn’t an option. LIAM-622 is the promising first production model of a groundbreaking new type of autonomous metahuman. After centuries of research in artificial intelligence, he’s the culmination of the latest advances in humanoid technology, built as a sympathetic companion for a human partner. His purpose is to address the deteriorating mental health of traumatized Galactic Explorers, enabling them to heal and return to their missions. He’s supposed to be as lifelike as possible, but not everyone appreciates his efforts to learn from and emulate humans—including the man he’s been partnered with. Liam wants to help Ethan. He has all the resources he needs. But what he doesn’t have is the understanding required to empathize with his partner’s plight. To Ethan, Liam is nothing more than a fancy computer, and it’ll take more than pretty words and an even prettier face to change his mind. Ethan and Liam are opposing forces, thrust together in an endeavor neither of them could have navigated on their own. If they learn to understand each other, they could build the foundation for the new frontier of human advancement. And if they fail, it could mean more than the loss of a project. It could set humanity back hundreds of years. Because it’s not only AI the detractors are trying to oppress. They’re coming for the FGIA itself. Book excerpt: Will Destroy the Galaxy for Cash is the follow up tale to Will Save the Galaxy for Food from the mind of writer Yahtzee Croshaw (Mogworld, Jam, Differently Morphous). With the age of heroic star pilots and galactic villains completely killed by quantum teleportation, the ex-star pilot currently named Dashford Pierce is struggling to find his identity in a changing universe. Then, a face from his past returns and makes him an offer he can't refuse: take part in just one small, slightly illegal, heist, and not only will he have the means to start the new life he craves, but also save his childhood hero from certain death. What could go wrong? If you need to ask--you don't know Dashford Pierce. Before long, Pierce is surrounded by peril, and forced to partner with the very same supervillains he'd spent his heroic career thwarting. But when he's confronted by the uncomfortable truth that star pilots might not have been the force for good, they had intended to be, he begins to wonder if the villains hadn't had the right idea all along...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where did everything come from? Why are humans so biologically similar, and why do we let small differences divide us? What shall determine our destiny? Paul Singh and John R. Shook draw on the latest findings from the physical and biological sciences, astronomy and cosmology, geology and genetics, and prehistory and archeology in search of answers. As they lucidly and engagingly demonstrate, the answers science gives about ourselves and the universe in which we live are incomparably more surprising and interesting than any mythical tale about some clash of titans or calculating creator. Indeed, science's proud journey of exploration and discovery is humanity's finest narrative yet, about how we trusted our intelligence to find out what we really are and who we can be—intrepidly going wherever the evidence led. Even though science reveals that humanity may have no special place in the universe, humanity is truly special because of our ability to comprehend our universe. Thus, this inspiring story of exploration and discovery is a celebration not only of science—of science's knowledge of the world, and of science's own journeys to gain that knowledge—but also of ourselves.
