Book Synopsis Sterling A. Brown by : Joanne V. Gabbin
Download or read book Sterling A. Brown written by Joanne V. Gabbin and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sterling A. Brown's achievement and influence in the field of American literature and culture are unquestionably significant. His poetry has been translated into Spanish, French, German, and Russian and has been read in literary circles throughout the world. He is also one of the principal architects of black criticism. His critical essays and books are seminal works that give an insider's perspective of literature by and about blacks. Leopold Sedar Senghor, who became familiar with Brown's poetry and criticism in the 1920s and 1930s, called him "an original militant of Negritude, a precursor of our movement." Yet Joanne V. Gabbin's book, originally published in 1985, remains the only study of Brown's work and influence. Gabbin sketches Brown's life, drawing on personal interviews and viewing his achievements as a poet, critic, and cultural griot. She analyzes in depth the formal and thematic qualities of his poetry, revealing his subtle adaptation of song forms, especially the blues. To articulate the aesthetic principles Brown recognized in the writings of black authors, Gabbin explores his identification of the various elements that have come together to create American culture.

Book Synopsis The Tobacco Lords Trilogy by : Margaret Thomson Davis
Download or read book The Tobacco Lords Trilogy written by Margaret Thomson Davis and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 1999-06-15 with total page 916 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in Glasgow during the Jacobite Rising of 1745, The Tobacco Lords Trilogy is the epic story of two very different women - Annabelle Ramsay, the wilful and impetuous daughter of a rich Tobacco Lord, and Regina Chisholm, a child of the slums, born to a life of poverty and degradation yet determined to make something of herself. As the story unfolds, their lives and loves become tragically intertwined, and the two women become deadly enemies - rivals in an all-consuming passion that will last a lifetime and follow them from the streets of Glasgow to the shores of the New World and the splendour of colonial Williamsburg. A compelling story of romance and rivalry, The Tobacco Lords Trilogy is also a marvellous evocation of the city of Glasgow and its people in the 18th century - from the wealth and grandeur of the Tobacco Lords, the city's thriving merchants, to the poverty and desperation of the filthy, overcrowded tenements.

It was a cruel fate even for the toughest of individuals but especially for 15-year-old Jenny Taggart, who was sentenced to lifelong exile for a crime she did not commit. Will there be a future for her in this unknown country, or will she succumb to a rough and brutal life? Rebels and outcasts, they fled halfway across the earth to settle the harsh Australian wastelands. Decades later — ennobled by love and strengthened by tragedy — they had transformed a wilderness into a fertile land. And themselves into The Australians.

Book Synopsis Levi Coffin and the Underground Railroad by : Charles Ludwig
Download or read book Levi Coffin and the Underground Railroad written by Charles Ludwig and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-04 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Levi Coffin and the Underground Railroad' recreates the human drama, pathos, excitement, and danger surrounding the attempts of American blacks in the 1800s to find release from oppression in the South. With cruelty to slaves indelibly impressed on his mind as a child, young Levi Coffin, a Quaker, was determined to spend his life improving their lot. In spite of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793, he took seriously the admonition of Deuteronomy 23:15: Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee. Levi appealed to the consciences of fellow Quakers. He and his wife, Catherine, provided refuge, food, and moral support in their home during several decades for a stream of some 3,000 runaways headed for Canada. One of the slaves the Coffins assisted, Eliza Harris, became the leading character in Harriet Beecher Stowe's influential novel, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. Frustrated by Coffin's successful efforts to help fugitives elude recapture, slave-hunters nicknamed him President of the Underground Railroad. The network of cooperative homes became known as stations or depots, the wagons as trains, the drivers as brakemen or firemen, and the hosts along the way as stationmasters or conductors. This book presents Levi Coffin's experiences in a way that will capture the interest and admiration of young and old alike.
