Book excerpt: 7 take advantage of the panel structure of their data to control for possible errors of specifica tion in their models. It is interesting to note that the econometric and DEA methods may be closer than some of their respective advocates seem to believe. Several of the studies show that the former as well as the latter can be effectively used to assess the relative effi ciency of groups of firms or individual firms, and one of them explicitly compare results arising from both (Fecher et al.). Econometric techniques can also be nonparametric and applied to estimating cost or production frontiers (and not only "average" functions), while ultimately DEA should be amenable to statistical inference. Perhaps the most valuable feature of all the analyses is their care and ingenuity in putting together the data, measuring variables, and pulling out relevant information. Many of them are not content with an overall output measure, but endeavor to manage with less aggregated measures. Nearly all also include in the estimated models a number of auxiliary variables intended to control for specific attributes of outputs, inputs, or production techniques, and other characteristics of firms.
Book Synopsis The Red Queen among Organizations by : William P. Barnett
Download or read book The Red Queen among Organizations written by William P. Barnett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a scene in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass in which the Red Queen, having just led a chase with Alice in which neither seems to have moved from the spot where they began, explains to the perplexed girl: "It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place." Evolutionary biologists have used this scene to illustrate the evolutionary arms race among competing species. William Barnett argues that a similar dynamic is at work when organizations compete, shaping how firms and industries evolve over time. Barnett examines the effects--and unforeseen perils--of competing and winning. He takes a fascinating, in-depth look at two of the most competitive industries--computer manufacturing and commercial banking--and derives some startling conclusions. Organizations that survive competition become stronger competitors--but only in the market contexts in which they succeed. Barnett shows how managers may think their experience will help them thrive in new markets and conditions, when in fact the opposite is likely to be the case. He finds that an organization's competitiveness at any given moment hinges on the organization's historical experience. Through Red Queen competition, weaker competitors fail, or they learn and adapt. This in turn heightens the intensity of competition and further strengthens survivors in an ever-evolving dynamic. Written by a leading organizational theorist, The Red Queen among Organizations challenges the prevailing wisdom about competition, revealing it to be a force that can make--and break--even the most successful organization.

Book Synopsis The Deregulation of the World Financial Markets by : Sarkis Khoury
Download or read book The Deregulation of the World Financial Markets written by Sarkis Khoury and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive examination of the deregulation of financial markets that began in the United States in the mid-1960s and has now reached global proportions. The author examines the deregulatory steps taken in each of the major financial markets--the United States, Britain, Japan, Australia, and Hong Kong--exploring the impetus behind the deregulatory developments, their potency, and their effects on the operational, promotional, and allocational efficiency of financial markets. Khoury also assesses the effects of deregulation on the stability of financial markets and on the movement toward political and economic integration within these markets. Throughout, Khoury focuses particular attention on the dynamics of the deregulation process and the forces that generated it in each of the markets under study. Khoury begins by tracing the evolution of the internationalization of the financial markets and their deregulation over the last three decades. He then examines the economics of financial deregulation and the implications of regulatory changes. Four chapters are devoted to extended analysis of deregulation in the various financial centers. Khoury compares and contrasts the similarities and differences among the five markets, examines the impact of regulatory developments in each market, and analyzes the growing interrelationships among financial markets. A separate chapter looks at the effects of deregulation on the foreign exchange, money, and stock markets, and on the performance and stability of the banking sector. Finally, Khoury looks to the future of deregulation, describing the changes that are likely to occur in the regulatory structure and in the money and capital markets. Ideal as supplemental reading for courses in international finance and banking, this book also offers bankers and regulators new insights into the potential and actual effects of various regulatory and deregulatory measures.
