Book Synopsis The Development of Latino Media in the United States by : Suzana Gusa
Download or read book The Development of Latino Media in the United States written by Suzana Gusa and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Development of Latino Media in the United States: Past, Present, and Future Projections," looks at the evolution of Latino media in the United States, while recognizing its pioneers. This paper starts at the begining, examining Univision, Telemundo and Galavision, three of the key players in Latino media in the United States, and examines their development to now where Univision and Telemundo are rivals and competitors, and Galavision is the first Spanish-language cable network affiliated with Univision. After examining and reporting on the past, the present will be examined and addressed. The current state of Univision, Telemundo and Galavision will be analyzed. These Latino media players, among others, have expanded and grown rapidly during the 2000s and this paper will explore the reasons behind this fast expansion. Latino media and Latino citizens will be surveyed on their satisfaction of Latino media content; their future projections on the Latino media development will also form a part of this survey. This paper is not historical, anthropological, social or intercultural and although it may touch on many of these theems, it is meant to be read in the context of a paper examining, analyzing, and reporting on the development of Latino media in the United States. The underlying question behind this paper and the question that will be answered through the information gathered is: Has Latino media developed in accordance with the Latino population growth in the United States? The U.S. Census Bureau data will be used in reference to this question. The emphasis will be placed on the cities Latino media started in and progressively moved into; Latino population growth in these cities will be analyzed for the same time period. Latino radio station numbers in three United States cities will be looked at and the difference and disparity in the numbers will be attributed to the Latino population percentage in these given cities. Chicago, Los Angeles and Cleveland are the three cities in which Latino radio station numbers will be examined. In the future portion of the paper Latino media journalists will be surveyed as well as Latino citizens on their satisfaction with the Latino media content and on their future projections for the Latino media's development in the United States. Specific detail will be given to the differences and similarities in the responses between the two groups surveyed. The idea behind this paper is to simply offer information on how, where, and by whom the idea of Spanish-language media in the United States originated. This paper will help those interesetd to find out about the origins, progression, and expansion of the major players in Latino media in the United States. Emphasis needs to be put on the fact that this is not a paper on the affect of Latino media, the content of Latino media, the impact of Latino media, the social and economical factors behind Latino media, or about any other benefits or disadvantages Latino media in the United States might have. This paper reports on and honors the pioneers of Latino media in the United States. It also examines the quick and successful growth of Latino media in the U.S. while trying to conclude if this rapid growth is in conjunction with the rapid growth of the Latino population across the United States.

An introductory essay examines current critical and theoretical debates on melodrama and places the essays within the context of Latin American film and media scholarship. Book Synopsis Prestige Television by : Seth Friedman
Download or read book Prestige Television written by Seth Friedman and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prestige Television explores how a growing array of 21st century US programming is produced and received in ways that elevate select series above the competition in a saturated market. Contributing authors demonstrate that these shows are positioned and understood as comprising an increasingly recognizable genre characterized by familiar markers of distinction. In contrast to most accounts of elite categorizations of contemporary US television programming that center on HBO and its primary streaming rivals, these essays examine how efforts to imbue series with prestigious or elevated status now permeate the rest of the medium, including network as well as basic and undervalued premium cable channels. Case study chapters focusing on diverse series, ranging from widely recognized examples such as The Americans (2013-2018) and The Knick (2014-15) to contested examples like Queen of the South (2016-2021) and How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014), highlight how contributing authors extend conceptions of the genre beyond expected parameters.

Book excerpt: Homecoming Queers provides a critical discussion of the multiple strategies used by queer Latina authors and artists in the United States to challenge silence and invisibility within mainstream media, literary canons, and theater spaces. Marivel T. Danielson's analysis reveals the extensive legacy of these cultural artists, including novelists, filmmakers, students and activists, comedians, performers, and playwrights. By clearly discussing the complexities and universalities of ethnic, racial, sexual, gender, and class intersections between queer Chicana and U.S. Latinas, Danielson explores the multiple ways identity shapes and shades creative expression. Weaknesses and gaps are revealed in the treatment of difference as a whole, within dominant and marginalized communities. Spanning multiple genres and forms, and including scholarly theory alongside performances, films, narratives, and testimonials, Homecoming Queers leads readers along a crucial path toward understanding and overcoming the silences that previously existed across these fields.

The selective bibliography gathers the books and magazine literature over the previous ten years while providing access through author, title and subject indexes.

Book Synopsis In the Spirit of a New People by : Randy J. Ontiveros
Download or read book In the Spirit of a New People written by Randy J. Ontiveros and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reexamining the Chicano civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, In the Spirit of a New People brings to light new insights about social activism in the twentieth-century and new lessons for progressive politics in the twenty-first. Randy J. Ontiveros explores the ways in which Chicano/a artists and activists used fiction, poetry, visual arts, theater, and other expressive forms to forge a common purpose and to challenge inequality in America. Focusing on cultural politics, Ontiveros reveals neglected stories about the Chicano movement and its impact: how writers used the street press to push back against the network news; how visual artists such as Santa Barraza used painting, installations, and mixed media to challenge racism in mainstream environmentalism; how El Teatro Campesino’s innovative “actos,” or short skits, sought to embody new, more inclusive forms of citizenship; and how Sandra Cisneros and other Chicana novelists broadened the narrative of the Chicano movement. In the Spirit of a New People articulates a fresh understanding of how the Chicano movement contributed to the social and political currents of postwar America, and how the movement remains meaningful today.
