His description is, unfortunately, insufficient to determine the species which made its appearance on the dead bees, and which he did not name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fungous Diseases of the Honeybee The study of diseases of bees due to fungi has been much later in its development than the study of those caused by bacteria. Much the greater share of the attention of investigators of bee diseases has been given to the two serious bacterial brood diseases, American foul brood and European foulbrood, caused respectively by B lemme and B. Pluton. In America only two reports are on record of diseases of bees and their brood caused by hyphomycetous fungi. In 1896 Howard of Texas, described a new brood disease which he called pickled brood or white fungus, caused by a species of Aspergillus to which he gave the name Aspergillus Two years later he described (15) the same disease as occurring in both pupae and adult bees and stated his belief that this disease had been mistakenly diagnosed by beekeepers as paralysis. In both reports Howard gives descriptions and illustrations of the disease, which he called pickled brood or white fungus, which are more readily applicable to the disease known as sacbrood than to those caused by fungi. He ascribed this disease to the pathogenic Aspergillus, A. Pollini. The dead larvae are described as at first white and watery, later becoming black and swollen, and finally dry ing down to black scales. In no case was the fungus, which Howard assumes to be the cause of the disease, observed on the larvae, and isolations of the organism were not made. In adult bees the disease is described as causing black, shiny, apparently frozen abdomens. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Behavior of the Honey Bee in Pollen Collecting Although, as above noted, some unbranched hairs are located upon the body of the bee, they occur in greatest numbers upon the more distal segments of the appendages. They are quite diverse in form, some being extremely long and slender, such as those which curve over the pollen baskets, others being stout and stifl', as those which form the collecting brushes and the pecten spines. The mouth parts Of the bee are also essential to the proper col lection of pollen. T h e mandibles are used to scrape over the anthers Of flowers, and considerable pollen adheres to them and is later removed. The same is true of the maxillae and tongue. From the mouth comes the fluid by which the pollen grains are moistened. The legs Of the worker bee are especially adapted for pollen gath ering. Each leg bears a collecting brush, composed Of stiff, un branched hairs set closely together. These brushes are located upon the first or most proximal tarsal segment of the legs, known techni cally as the palmae of the forelegs and as the plantae of the middle and hind pair. The brush of the foreleg is elongated and of Slight width (fig. That of the middle leg broad and flat (fig. While the brush upon the planta of the hind leg is the broadest of all, and is also the most highly Specialized. In addition to these well-marked brushes, the distal ends Of the tibiae of the fore and middle legs bear many stiff hairs, which function as pollen collectors, and the distal tarsal joints Of all legs bear similar structures. Of course, any comb is readily attacked and destroyed. In the case of stored honey, the comb is preferred as food and the honey is only eaten ia' small quantities. Honey cappings are readily devoured whenever found and often serve as the only food of the waxworm. It has been said that if fed on pure wax the worms will die. The writer observed one instance in which two full sheets of medium brood foundation were riddled by the wax worm. Hall, Colo, Story County: After trying every plan have decided that for Iowa conditions cellar wintering is best. Of equal numbers wintered in cellar and packed outside losses have been several times greater in outdoor wintered colonies. (sioux County). In Story county lost only one colony in 356 wintered in the cellar. In one cel lar which was too warm losses were heavier. When bees are in right condition they will winter in almost any hole in the ground. No ap parent differences in results whether t0ps and bottoms are left on, or removed. W. S. Pangburn, Center Junction, Jones County: A seven-eighth inch entrance is used winter and summer. The bees are tiered up five high in cellar with front of hive one inch lower than back. The door is frequently opened at night to let in fresh air. Temperature is not so important as proper ventilation and a dry cellar. The results of win tering are frequently perfect, but have had some losses when honey dew was mixed with the stores. Spring dwindling is caused by putting the bees out too early. Plenty of stores for early brood rear ing are important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mankind has always had a love-hate relationship with fungi. On the positive side, edible mushrooms and truffles are gastronomic delights, and certain fungi possess medicinal properties. On the other hand, many mushrooms are poisonous, and fungi can inflict costly damage on crops and other property. This captivating book explores both sides of the story, examining aspects usually overlooked in texts and field guides. The survey begins with fungi lore from mythology and legends, focusing particularly on the plants' association with devils, witches, and fairies. A balanced portrait of fungi in the real world considers not only the ruin caused by the plants but also their uses in medicine and industry and as foods. Ranging far and wide in its topics, the narrative offers a light touch and plenty of enthusiasm, making this book fun for everyone with even a casual interest in mushrooms. In addition, serious mushroom hunters will find this volume a practical reference and a fascinating resource for leisurely browsing.
