Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Argumentation and Debate In regard to the content and method of certain chapters, a word of explanation may be due. In the first place it was decided that considerable material showing the relation of argumentation to other fields, particularly to those of law and logic, should be included in this volume. I have long desired that my classes should have more complete and more authoritative explanations of our relations with these fields than I have been able to find in previous text-books on argu mentation, and I know that I am not alone in this. Most teachers of argumentation and debate probably desire that their students shall have backgrounds and foundations in the subjects comparable to those furnished students in other departments of the curriculum. Such backgrounds and foundations will make it possible for the student of argu mentation to relate this work intelligently to his work in logic, law, English composition, etc. And particularly they will enable him to take the results of this work with him to his work in all other courses and into his thinking and acting in everyday life. Having decided to include material of this sort (such as is particularly found in the chapters dealing with Evidence, Kinds of Arguments, and Fallacies), the question arose as to the manner in which such material should be introduced. It was decided that the use of many direct quotations from recognized authorities in these several fields would be the most frank, most accurate, most authoritative, and on the whole most satisfactory method. It is for this reason that the readers will find an unusual, though under the circumstances I trust not an undue, amount of direct quotation from other writers, in this text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Argumentation: Revised and Augmented It is a pity that in many instances study of argument is regarded only as a stepping-stone to successful debating, the most rigid of argumentative forms. In reality it is a training, often much needed among college students, in habits of accurate thinking, fair-mindedness, and thorough ness. If this new edition helps to instruction in which argument is regarded from the start by teacher and pupil as above all a means to accurate, thorough, formulated thinking, enjoyable to the thinker, presented in a well phrased and individual style, the chief desire of the authors in their revision will be fulfilled. I owe so much in the past, also, to their enthu siasm and their intelligent devotion to their work, that I cannot refrain from recognizing my indebtedness. For valuable suggestions while this book has been going through the press and for reading of the proofs I wish in particular to thank assistant-professor S. C. Hart of Wellesley College, and Mr. F. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Argumentation: For High Schools and Academies The increasing interest taken in debate by the larger high schools and academies has prompted the preparation of this Manual of Argumentation. There has seemed to be need of a book that would present in a clear and simple way the elements of debate to that large class of students who are not advanced enough to master the rather difficult college text-books on the subject, but who are deeply interested in debating because it appeals to those instincts which are the basis of oratory and as old as the race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Argument N azure and Requirements of Proo]. - Some law or prin ciple, whether expressed or not, lies at the foundation of every valid argument, inductive as well as deductive, and proof essentially consists in bringing the proposition to be proved within an accepted law or principle. We assume the existence, says Mr. Alfred Sidgwick, oi uniformities in nature - natural laws; the narrowing down of these into exactitude being the endless problem of discovery, and the completest knowledge of them already attained at any period being, for that period, the basis of all explanation, prediction, and proof. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Debate In compiling this book, the aim has been to make a compact manual for beginners in debate. With this aim in view, many of the technicalities of Logic and Argumentation have been omitted, and only those logical forms have been included which seem essential. The advantage of such a book should be to give pupils enough of the theory to make their practice debates intellectually profitable, and to do this without unnecessary loss of time. The Manual is intended for use as a drill book. Hence, in immediate connection with each logical form is given the method of its refutation; examples are added for practice; and the Summary is in the form of a table for ready reference. This table should ultimately be committed to memory. By careful study of the forms and their refutations, and with sufficient practice, the debater should be able to recognize the logical forms of the arguments presented by an opponent, and each form should then suggest its possible refutation. For instance, on hearing an argument from Example, the debater should be able to recognize the logical form at once, and he should also know at just what point in the example to look for the only possible fallacy.
