Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Functional Anatomy of the Spermatozoon is the 23rd volume of the series Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series, documenting the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Comparative Spermatology, held in August 1973. This volume mainly focuses on the understanding of the early events at fertilization and the preliminaries of this biological process. This text specifically tackles the sperm at fertilization of lower animals and mammals, sperm motility and diversity, and spermatogenesis. This book concludes with discussions on capacitation and maturation of mammalian spermatozoa. This compendium will be valuable to morphologists, physiologists, immunologists, and biochemists, as well as to academicians interested in the study of functional anatomy of the spermatozoon.

Download or read book The Sperm Cell written by J. André and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: , Jean ANDRE Universite de Paris XI, ORSAY, France. Sperm cells have long been considered as the most highly specialized of all living cells. They surely are, being very diverse, very complex, containing organelles which do not exist in any other cell -such as acrosome or crystallized mitochondria- and being endowed with a very unique behaviour, that is to meet and recognize the ovum, pierce its protective envelopes and inject into its cytoplasm a most precious deposit, the haploid genome of the species. It is Baccio Baccetti's merit to have felt the need for a confrontation of the scientists working on sperm in order to clarify the apparent complexity of the enormous amount of knowledge accumulated on the subject. Thus, he successfully inaugurated the series of the InternationaZ Symposia on SpermatoZogy. The Seillac edition is the fourth in the series. After an initial stage during which morphology was predominant, our meetings have turned more and more towards function. It has been the will of the French Organizing Committee to devote this meeting mainly to Eutherians, and, among those, to man, in connection with the conflicting necessities to help the sterile couples and to contrul the population explosion at the surface of the world.

Book excerpt: In this book the authors present current research in the study of spermatozoa. This compilation focuses on the biology, motility and function and chromosomal abnormalities of spermatozoa. Topics discussed are the epigenetic mechanisms in mammalian male germline; biological characteristics of sperm in two oyster species; sub-cellular dynamics occurring during capacitation of mammalian spermatozoa; new perspectives on the study of prion and prion-like proteins; meiotic segregation studies in spermatozoa of males carrying a structural chromosome abnormality; testicular germ cell apoptosis during orchitis; the influence of leukocytospermia on semen parameters; and spermatozoa motility and morphology.

Download or read book Dynamics of the Mammalian Sperm Head written by Kiyotaka Toshimori and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-05-08 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mammalian spermatozoa have complex structures. The structure-function relationship of sperm has been studied from various viewpoints. Accumulated evidence has shown that the sperm components undergo sequential changes from the beginning of spermatogenesis to the time of fertilization/embryogenesis. Structural analyses have been performed using various new techniques of light and electron microscopy as well as immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry in combination with specific probes such as antibodies against sperm components. Recently developed gene-manipulation techniques have accelerated investigations on the events that govern the relationship between the structure and molecular components of sperm. In addition, animal models with gene manipulations have been shown to exhibit various morphological and functional abnormalities that lead to infertility. In this book, I discuss the events that occur in the normal sperm head and govern the structure-function relationship from the time of spermatogenesis to that of fertilization or egg activation. In this regard, I describe dynamic modifications and maturation events occurring in sperm-head components and compare the outcomes of these events with the outcomes of their failure.

Book Synopsis A Practical Guide to Basic Laboratory Andrology by : Lars Björndahl
Download or read book A Practical Guide to Basic Laboratory Andrology written by Lars Björndahl and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical, extensively illustrated handbook covers the procedures that are undertaken in andrology and ART laboratories to analyse and assess male-factor infertility, and to prepare spermatozoa for use in assisted conception therapy. The content is presented as brief, authoritative overviews of the relevant biological background for each area, plus detailed, step-by-step descriptions of the relevant analytical procedures. Each technical section includes pertinent quality control considerations, as well as the optimum presentation of results. In addition to the comprehensive 'basic' semen analysis, incorporating careful analysis of sperm morphology, the handbook provides established techniques for the use of computer-aided sperm analysis and sperm functional assessment. Throughout the handbook the interpretation of laboratory results in the clinical context is highlighted, and safe laboratory practice is emphasized. It is an invaluable resource to all scientists and technicians who perform diagnostic testing for male-factor infertility.
