Download or read book American Art Pottery written by Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana} At the height of the Arts and Crafts era in Europe and the United States, American ceramics were transformed from industrially produced ornamental works to handcrafted art pottery. Celebrated ceramists such as George E. Ohr, Hugh C. Robertson, and M. Louise McLaughlin, and prize-winning potteries, including Grueby and Rookwood, harnessed the potential of the medium to create an astonishing range of dynamic forms and experimental glazes. Spanning the period from the 1870s to the 1950s, this volume chronicles the history of American art pottery through more than three hundred works in the outstanding collection of Robert A. Ellison Jr. In a series of fascinating chapters, the authors place these works in the context of turn-of-the-century commerce, design, and social history. Driven to innovate and at times fiercely competitive, some ceramists strove to discover and patent new styles and aesthetics, while others pursued more utopian aims, establishing artist communities that promoted education and handwork as therapy. Written by a team of esteemed scholars and copiously illustrated with sumptuous images, this book imparts a full understanding of American art pottery while celebrating the legacy of a visionary collector.

Book excerpt: Stangl Pottery produced a great assortment of earthenware lamps and artware, but the company was renowned for its hand-carved, hand-painted fruit and floral decorated dinnerware patterns. This book lists nearly all of Stangl's dinnerware patterns and dinnerware-related items in the order in which they were introduced. Listed with each pattern are all known pieces with a price range and brief description of the pattern. All available production details and history are also included. Over 500 full-color photographs of dinnerware patterns from the 1920s through the 1970s add to the thoroughness of this colorful book. Samples and test pieces, novelty salt and pepper shakers, dealer signs, paper products, advertising, and premiums are included. Collectors will appreciate this extensive volume showcasing Stangl's decorative dinnerware.
Book Synopsis I Hate You, Fuller James by : Kelly Anne Blount
Download or read book I Hate You, Fuller James written by Kelly Anne Blount and published by Entangled: Crush. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I hate you, Fuller James. I hate your floppy hair and your lopsided grin and those laughing blue eyes that always seem to be laughing at me. I hate that you’re the most popular guy in school and I’m still the girl who sneezed and spit out her retainer on someone at a middle school dance. It’s just such a cliché. I hate that I’m being forced to tutor you in English and keep it a secret from everyone. Because otherwise it might put our basketball team’s chances at winning State in jeopardy, and even though I hate you, I love basketball. I hate that it seems like you’re keeping a secret from me...and that the more time we spend together, the less I feel like I’m on solid ground. Because I’m starting to realize there’s so much more to you than meets the eye. Underneath it all, you’re real. But what I hate most is that I really don’t hate you at all.

Book Synopsis Exploding Wires by : William G. Chace
Download or read book Exploding Wires written by William G. Chace and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Second Conference on the Exploding Wire Phenomenon. In addition to the general theory of exploding wires, this conference considered exploding wire shock waves; the generation by exploding wires of extreme tem peratures, X-rays, and very high pressures; instrumentationprob lems in wire explosions; and, for the first time, exploding foils. Sponsored by the Geophysics Research Directorate ofthe Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, this symposium was held in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 13 and 14, 1961. To fill a definite need for ready access to information, Volume Two of Exploding Wires contains a comprehensive index which should facilitate the use of both volumes on the exploding wire phenomenon. It is not possible to express full appreciation to all those whose generous assistance made the Second Conference and this volume possible. It is certain, however, that without the cooperation of Dr. John N. Howard, Laboratory Chief, and Mr. Morton A. Levine, Branch Chief, there could have been no conference. Special ac knowledgment goes to the Staff of the Hydromagnetics Laboratory for its invaluable aid: to Mrs. William Watson for exceptional secretarial work; to Mr. E. H. Cullington for technical assistance; to Mr. C. V. Fish for drawings, graphs, and art work; and to Mr. K. R. Saari for photography. Particular gratitude is due to Mr.

Book Synopsis Fired by Ideals by : Suzanne Baizerman
Download or read book Fired by Ideals written by Suzanne Baizerman and published by Pomegranate. This book was released on 2000 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arts and Crafts Movement exerted a profound influence on early-twentieth-century America, not only in the applied and decorative arts but also in the area of social reform. Standing at this intersection of art and reform were American art potteries that taught ceramics skills to working-class women as a means of securing income, restoring health, and/or uplifting the spirit. Like its better known and more successful predecessors -- the Marblehead Pottery in Massachusetts, the Newcomb Pottery in New Orleans, and the Paul Revere Pottery in Boston (home of the "Saturday Evening Girls") -- the Arequipa Pottery in Fairfax, California, had fascinating origins, and it produced distinctive wares that today are prized by collectors. Fired by Ideals: Arequipa Pottery and the Arts & Crafts Movement tells the story of the Arequipa Sanatorium and Pottery, whose roots lie in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The dust and smoke from the disaster prompted an outbreak of tuberculosis, which afflicted "working girls" in particular. In 1911, a progressive physician, Dr. Philip King Brown, founded a treatment center in rural Marin County, north of San Francisco, where these women could get the rest and medical care they needed, as well as engage in a therapeutic and marketable pursuit: the manufacture of art pottery. In addition to its engaging historical narrative supported by dozens of vintage photographs, the book employs technical illustrations and beautiful full-color reproductions to examine the production process at Arequipa and the types of pottery made there.
