Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fugitive Millionaire Her small, fair, rather exquisitely tinted face was clouded, her clear, carefully modu lated but hard voice was querulous. She looked across at the slim, straight, white-clad figure at the window at once speculatively and with annoyance. She found her step daughter annoying more often than not; and she was never wholly at her ease with her. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Substitute Millionaire Young Jack Norman read of the millions with the kind of aching gusto that a hungry man pictures a good dinner. Jack's earnings were twelve dollars a week. He knew little about sociology or economics, but he could not but feel a dim dissatisfaction with the scheme of things that restricted him, with all a youth's capacity for living largely, to twelve dollars weekly, while it provided the old man with the tastes of a hermit crab, with a hundred thousand. Twelve dollars a week meant that Jack's still boyish appetite daily had to be less than satisfied by the fare of a second rate boarding house; it meant that he had to wear cheap clothes when the instinct of his years was to array himself like Solomon; it meant that his lip must curl with envy as the pleasures of the town passed him by; hardest of all to bear, it meant that the joys of honorable courtship were denied him. A fellow must have money to take a girl out in town. Jack's case was not peculiar. The same expression of sullen wistfulness might have been read in many a young face on the same train. What distinguished this face from the others was a latent fire in the eyes which suggested that, given the opportunity, the possessor had the capacity to play a larger part in life than twelve dollars a week permitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Millionaire Tramp The Margates came in 1776, from an advanced farming section of the north, ready to give the benefit of their advice to all about them. Squire Landsdowne, being a near neighbor, received a generous share; but, having lorded it over the community for many years he, unfortunately, was not inclined to be dictated to. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fish (Florida International Univ.; emer., Univ. of Illinois, Chicago) "reads" The Fugitive, the mid-1960s television series, as a work of classic literature, teasing out moral and philosophical themes in various episodes. Examining such oppositions as inner truth versus outer appearance, individual independence versus community conformity, justice versus law, innocence versus justice, he depicts the series as capturing a shift in American culture. Fish defines the shift by quoting William Pfaff on the impact of shifting population and decline of the influence of churches. "Add to these developments," writes Fish, "the ideological efforts of liberals who contributed to the old America's demise by [to further quote Pfaff] attacking its values, despising its conformism and subordinating the demands of community to those of individual liberty." Fish argues that the series is similar to a theological text because of its "preoccupation with primary values," most primary among them freedom "in the moral sense ... freedom from attachments that own [one] and circumscribe [one's] will." The author contends that the "moral and philosophical significance" with which he has burdened The Fugitive was in fact intended by Roy Huggins, the creator of the series. This interesting, well-crafted interpretation of the series resonates with cultural significance. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty. Book excerpt: Musaicum Books presents to you this carefully created volume of "The Leavenworth Case & Other Detective Novels - 22 Thrillers in One Edition". This ebook has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935) was an American poet and novelist. Green has been called "the mother of the detective novel". Green is credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the series detective. Her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, the prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and other creations. She also invented the 'girl detective': in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Indeed, as journalist Kathy Hickman writes, Green "stamped the mystery genre with the distinctive features that would influence writers from Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle to contemporary authors of suspenseful "whodunits". She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. In addition to creating elderly spinster and young female sleuths, Green's innovative plot devices included dead bodies in libraries, newspaper clippings as "clews", the coroner's inquest, and expert witnesses. Table of Contents: The Leavenworth Case A Strange Disappearance X Y Z: A Detective Story Hand and Ring The Mill Mystery The Forsaken Inn Cynthia Wakeham's Money Agatha Webb One of My Sons The Filigree Ball The Millionaire Baby The Chief Legatee' The Woman in the Alcove The Mayor's Wife The House of the Whispering Pines Three Thousand Dollars Initials Only Dark Hollow The Mystery of the Hasty Arrow That Affair Next Door Lost Man's Lane The Circular Study
