Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to show you that God gave you a fruit basket full of attributes as a Christian caregiver to dementia sufferers. These attributes equip you as a Christian caregiver to endure the worst of days with a sense of knowing that God is with you throughout your day. You can apply one or many of these attributes to any given situation and turn it into a positive. I'm not sugar-coating caregiving. It's a very stressful and challenging job. Even when I don't feel like seeing the positives in a situation, a quick devotional reading or scripture does lift my mood so I won't be inclined to rip my hair out (or in my case take my wig off). I've included personal stories that I'm sure you can relate to. I'm not always Susie Sunshine. I'm a real caregiver and I feel your frustration. In each chapter I add a personal story and an accompanying scripture. I share these comical events in dementia care to let you know you're not alone and if you look closely there's something to smile about at least once a day. I laugh with mom so when I write I'm not making fun of her. I feel sympathy for her condition and she even laughs herself at the things that happen sometimes. The days can be bad, I know. When you're having one of those dark days, I hope you pick up this book and read it while you take a moment for yourself.

Book excerpt: Through personal experience as a caregiver to my parents, I gained first-hand knowledge of the responsibilities family caregivers carry on their shoulders. It became important for me to find out what other family caregivers say they need to help sustain their spirit during the journey of caring for someone they love. The outcome of this inquiry is a devotional developed in direct response to family caregiver interviews and their answers to survey questions. Woven between the pages of this devotional is a message for family caregivers, individuals concerned about family caregivers, faith communities, and for community groups that are not faith-based. The devotional is a companion for the caregiving journey that invites you to seek spiritual strength and wisdom from God and to replenish your spirit of compassion and love.

Book excerpt: The experience of being a caregiver for a loved one is an uncertain journey of challenges and choices. Many adult children are graduating into a world of a different “normal.” In To Reach a Reason, this became a true, spiritual journey, during the course of ten years. A story unfolds among one of several caregivers, in a family who unyieldingly took on the task of giving care to their mom, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The most challenging of times evolved into a spiritual journey, which bore the fruits of both abundant and unexpected blessings.

Exploring options—to care for aging parents while respecting their independence—can be exhausting emotionally and physically. Lovern, who writes from experience, not only shares sound advice regarding physical mental, residential, financial, legal, relational, and the seemingly endless other issues that arise for parental caregivers. She sheds light on how to lovingly address the emotions of both the cared-for and the caregiver, adding ideas and examples that help the aging person process present changes, and that encourage caregivers to cope through future events.

Book excerpt: Caring for the ill, disabled, very old, or very young requires a labor-intensive commitment that is not only essential to the well-being of individuals and to society as a whole, but also fraught with physical, financial, and psychological risks. And despite the critical nature of their job, caregivers rarely have avenues of support. The Challenges of Mental Health Caregiving addresses the complexities of the situation with uncommon depth and breadth. Suited to researchers, scientist-practitioners and clinicians, and students seeking a rounded understanding of the field, it examines how caregiving affects the lives, work, and mental health of family and professional caregivers. Chapters explore developmental, cultural, and spiritual contexts of care, addressing ongoing concerns about care in relation to larger health systems and emphasizing the need for care to be viewed as a community, rather than an individual or family experience. Further, the book's conclusion strongly advocates for more effective and efficient uses for available funds and resources while offering workable proposals for service improvements at the policy level. Key areas of coverage: The impact of caregiving on physical and mental health. Integrating mental health and primary care. The promotion of positive mental health outcomes in children and youth. Mid-life concerns and caregiver experience. Loss, grief, bereavement and the implications for mental health caregiving. Policy issues in caregiving and mental health. The Challenges of Mental Health Caregiving is a clear-sighted reference for researchers, clinicians and scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in the caregiving fields, including clinical psychology, social work, public health/medicine, geriatrics/gerontology, public policy, and educational policy.

Book excerpt: Often when we think about those who are sick or homebound, we think only of the patient, and rarely realize that there is a caregiver who is equally tied to the home and the restrictive schedule of the illness. This book is comprised of easy-to-read-and-digest devotional prayers, each supplication based on a biblical reading AND containing a brief concluding prayer. A suggested "Stop For A Minute" section after the final brief prayer allows a moment for the reading from Scripture to sink in, and, hopefully, help the exhausted caregiver "refuel" spiritually and emotionally. Not a "grief-resource" book, but, rather, a book to help caregivers care for themselves too, this work makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who spends him/herself in taking care of others. Highlights: --the devotional thoughts are short and to the point, specifically directed to the caregiver --easy to read --a spiritual drink for those short on time --theset "daily devotions" are unique in their specific application to the world of the caregiver +

In addition to practical tips, readers will find ways to care for themselves. Subjects addressed in Compassionate Caregiving include: how to balance work and caregiving; when and how to find home healthcare or care facilities; long-distance caregiving; how to provide for the dying; and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Is a Caregiver? A caregiver is anyone who is called upon to care for the needs of another. It might be as little as calling your dad a couple of times a week to make sure he is ok, or bringing meals to someone and taking them to doctors appointments. Then there are the full-time caregivers who have dedicated their lives to the complete care of another. This book is dedicated to all who care enough to do tangible things, helping someone who needs you. It is estimated that nearly one in five Americans is involved in caregiving at some level, and the number is rising rapidly. Sadly, studies also show that the general health and wellbeing of caregivers has declined and as our population ages, the need for more caregivers will increase. Providing care for a family member or friend can be rewarding and provide a real sense of purpose, but also poses challenges for the caregiver. There are many resources available that seek to educate and empower caregivers about how to perform caregiving tasks, but I have noted there is a huge need for caregivers to be encouraged, blessed, and given hope! In this book, I share true stories of my life as a caregiver. It is so important to know that you are not alone! The feelings and challenges you are experiencing are hard for even your closest family and friends to truly understand, but you’ll see in these stories that you can truly have joy in the midst of your difficulty. I pray that my book will provide encouragement, joy and hope! Phil Leichliter “Phil takes you by the hand and shares with you his love and gratitude. His book helps you prepare for moments of joy and of pain – the nuance of the simplest suggestions and the most meaningful responses, allowing you to provide compassionate care. Savor this book. Your heart will open.” Andrea Zanko, MS, Genetic Counselor, University of California at San Francisco, Genetics Clinic, (Retired), Creator of the UCSF Huntington’s Disease Clinic

Book excerpt: Though the schism of valuing spirituality with respect to social work practice has lessened over the years, there continues to be a gap in our understanding as to exactly what spirituality is and how one might incorporate it within social work practice? It is my contention that social workers should not only be incorporating spirituality within their practice, but also, they should become spiritual exemplars themselves. Fruit of the Spirit: A Primer for Spiritually-minded Social Workers provides some provocative notions that will spur the reader forward on his/her spiritual development. It introduces to the reader the notion of spiritual differentiation from the animalistic notion of self (which I describe as the "indifferent-heart realm"), to the development of humanistic principles ("craving-heart realm") to the ultimate experience of our purposeful journey of being fully cognizant of our spiritual selves ("pure-heart realm"). This process is exemplified with a gardening metaphor, which the reader can progress from "seeding" (awareness of one's spiritual self and the sowing of spiritual seeds), "weeding" (the structure and care of developing our spiritual selves) and the "harvesting" (the ingesting and granting of spiritual "fruits" that has been produced). Traditional knowledge of social work practice helps to elucidate the student; whereas, embracing spiritual principles is about transforming and transcending the student to higher levels. The "fruits" that are gathered are the attributes of God (e.g., love, peace, goodness, etc.). There are exercises at the end of each chapter that will assist the reader in developing his/her spirituality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding Grace in Caregiving arises out of Bradley Hanson’s quest for grace in caregiving his wife, Marion, who has Alzheimer’s Disease. Hanson knows from long experience that caregiving someone with dementia is very tiring and stressful. In search of spiritual practices that would foster patience and kindness, he turned to Scripture for guidance. The heart of the book is reflection on the qualities that St. Paul calls the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, and gentleness. Drawing also on his personal interviews with others across the country who care for someone with some form of dementia, Hanson gives caregivers encouragement, guidance, and hope. Those of us who do long-term caring for someone with dementia, whether we are a family member or professional caregiver, generally try to be patient and kind. Yet the stress and fatigue of long-term caregiving may lead us at times to erupt with anger. Since caring for his beloved wife, Marion, since her Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2010, Brad Hanson has looked to what St. Paul calls the fruit of the Spirit in strengthening his kindness.
