Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Friendship of Nations a Story of the Peace Movement for Young People This little book has a twofold purpose. It aims to serve as a manual of public exercises for the observance of Peace Day and as a supplementary reader for the school and home. As a reader the uses of the book will be evident. To some teachers, however, the idea of employing prose for public recitations may be new. To such it is suggested that a chapter, abbreviated to meet requirements, be assigned, paragraph by paragraph, to all the members of a class or to only a few, as a single poem is often assigned to four or five children. Each child should memorize his portion and speak it in the proper place in the text. In this way an entire entertainment may proceed without announcement or interruption, if the teacher so desires. It may seem rather presuming of the author to suggest that her own work be memorized. It is, however, only for want of simple, classic literature touching upon the subject that she makes the suggestion. There are many days upon the school calendar which, for one reason or another, claim observance. Yet none is more far-reaching in influence or more noble in conception than the day upon which arbitration and the new internationalism may be celebrated. Equally true is it that no other subject for celebration offers to the teacher such a wealth of material correlated with his daily work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the League of Nations: Told for Young People History to about Six hundred years before Christ, and tell you of a very interesting experiment, which was really like a little League of Nations, among some of the cities Of Ancient Greece. There was at that time in Greece a very rich and magnificent temple at Delphi. TO worship there, people came from many parts, and twelve cities agreed to join together to watch over the temple and its great wealth. Men from all the cities, small or large, met in council, and each city was allowed two votes. As they had a common Object in joining together, each began to feel that. The others in the Council were friends and brothers and to see that it would not do for them to fight amongst themselves so the members Of this amphictyonic league, as it was called, made promises to bring their quarrels for settlement to the League Council, and all the men from the cities who came to the Council took the following oath We will not destroy any Amphictyonic town; we will not cut Ofi' any Amphictyonic town from running water The Council settled a good many disputes, mostly to do with the Temple Of Delphi, but some Others as well. Thus, once when two cities had decided they must. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young People's Records and Children's Record Guild were the first commercially significant record clubs in the world. By applying proven book club methods to the field of phonograph records, these two related companies attracted some hundred thousand subscribers at their peak and serviced perhaps a million members in their existence. Revolutionizing Children's Records: The Young People's Records and Children's Record Guild Series, 1946-1977 tells the history of YPR/CRG, explaining how these two labels intersected important developments in the histories of mass marketing, recording technology, educational philosophy, folk music, contemporary composition, and Cold War politics. David Bonner covers in detail the history of YPR/CRG, tracing its influences back to the beginnings of music education in the 19th Century and incorporating the impact of the American folk music revival on music educators. The narrative follows the career paths of the company principals, such as its progressive founder Horace Grenell; the musicians who recorded for him, like American folk music revival pioneer Tom Glazer; and the record industry offshoots they created in the process. Bonner considers advances the club made in recording technology as the first record label devoted exclusively to "unbreakable" vinyl discs and provides a comprehensive summary of record club marketing, including the application of "music appreciation" to phonograph records. He also charts the commercial, critical, and political response to these endeavors, including an historical footnote to the "Red Scare" unavailable in existing Cold War literature. A complete and detailed discography listing every YPR and CRG recording, including all known writers and performers, concludes this excellent reference for scholars, nostalgists, and phonographic fanatics.
