Book excerpt: Raphael is a would-be author, but there have been so many distractions to the novel he has been writing for forty-one years that many of the characters have lost patience and gone off to do their own thing...but somehow, miraculously, the novel seems to write itself. The Frequency of Magic traverses an array of lives connected to the village of Million Hills. There's the speculative imagination of Luke's travels through mythic landscapes pursued by his nemesis, the carnival figure of the Great Bandit. There's the psychological odysseys of the musician, a jazz saxophonist, and Ella, an actor, both long separated from Million Hills, working their ways across the USA and Europe. When the paths of these exiles cross, a love affair begins. Time in this richly ambitious novel is both circular and simultaneous, but moving, as Raphael ages, towards a sense of dissolution both of persons and of the culture of the village. Above all, there is Raphael's belief that in the making of his fiction, however messy and disobedient its materials, art can both challenge the destructive passage of time and make us see reality afresh.

Book excerpt: God is speaking. Are you listening? As you open your spiritual "ears," you will learn to determine which channels God is using to broadcast his intentions. Discover how to discern his specific versus his general voice, recognize the multiple ways he communicates, and draw closer to him by reading his Word. As believers in Jesus Christ, we naturally want to know how we can hear God’s voice. Does God speak? Is He speaking to you? The good news is, yes, He is speaking. And like a radio host broadcasting His voice into the airwaves, God speaks all the time. The question is, are we tuned in to the right frequency? God communicates with us in multiple ways, whether through the Bible, through circumstances, or even through a whisper. Pastor Robert Morris demonstrates how we can grow in our faith, maturing from sheep hearing His voice to hearing it as His friend or even as a prophet. When we begin to understand the general and specific ways God speaks to us, then we can begin to cultivate a life of deeper connection with our Creator. In Frequency, you will: Gain a better understanding of how to recognize God’s voice Discern the general voice of God from the specific voice of God Grow in your relationship with the Lord by developing consistent time in His Word Value the voice of the Lord and enjoy drawing closer to your Creator Frequency will demystify the process of hearing God and take you to a new level in your faith.

This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-frequency analysis is a modern branch of harmonic analysis. It com prises all those parts of mathematics and its applications that use the struc ture of translations and modulations (or time-frequency shifts) for the anal ysis of functions and operators. Time-frequency analysis is a form of local Fourier analysis that treats time and frequency simultaneously and sym metrically. My goal is a systematic exposition of the foundations of time-frequency analysis, whence the title of the book. The topics range from the elemen tary theory of the short-time Fourier transform and classical results about the Wigner distribution via the recent theory of Gabor frames to quantita tive methods in time-frequency analysis and the theory of pseudodifferential operators. This book is motivated by applications in signal analysis and quantum mechanics, but it is not about these applications. The main ori entation is toward the detailed mathematical investigation of the rich and elegant structures underlying time-frequency analysis. Time-frequency analysis originates in the early development of quantum mechanics by H. Weyl, E. Wigner, and J. von Neumann around 1930, and in the theoretical foundation of information theory and signal analysis by D.

Book excerpt: Stress-induced birefringence may severely degrade or limit the optical performance of infrared transmitting materials, especially in high power laser applications, Thus, prediction of this phenomenon is essential for the appropriate selection of high power IR laser window materials for numerous applications. In this report a detailed first-principles calculation of the elasto-optic, or strain-optic, constants p sub ij is carried out for the first time throughout infrared frequencies, employing a recent theory of Humphreys and Maradudin. For ionic crystals, a Born-Mayer interatomic potential is used, while for semiconductors a Morse potential is used. Two methods for obtaining the p sub ij are applied: one incorporates parameters based on standard thermodynamic prescriptions, the other combines these same parameters with additional ones derived from pressure-dependent data. For both cases, the dispersions in the p sub ij, as well as in the thermal lensing parameters, are calculated throughout the IR regime for a wide variety of rocksalt- and zinc blende-structure compounds.

Yes, there were times when it was extremely cool, but when the newness of it all wore off, Annie Collins was left with a permanent security detail and the kind of constant scrutiny that makes the college experience especially awkward. Not helping matters: she’s the only kid in school with her own pet spaceship. She would love it if things found some kind of normal, but as long as she has control of the most lethal—and only—interstellar vehicle in existence, that isn’t going to happen. Worse, things appear to be going in the other direction. Instead of everyone getting used to the idea of the ship, the complaints are getting louder. Public opinion is turning, and the demands that Annie turn over the ship are becoming more frequent. It doesn’t help that everyone seems to think Annie is giving them nightmares. Nightmares aren’t the only weird things going on lately. A government telescope in California has been abandoned, and nobody seems to know why. The man called on to investigate—Edgar Somerville—has become the go-to guy whenever there’s something odd going on, which has been pretty common lately. So far, nothing has panned out: no aliens or zombies or anything else that might be deemed legitimately peculiar… but now may be different, and not just because Ed can’t find an easy explanation. This isn’t the only telescope where people have gone missing, and the clues left behind lead back to Annie. It all adds up to a new threat that the world may just need saving from, requiring the help of all the Sorrow Falls survivors. The question is: are they saving the world with Annie Collins, or are they saving it from her? The Frequency of Aliens is the exciting sequel to The Spaceship Next Door.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative exposition of the methods at the heart of modern non-stationary signal processing from a recognised leader in the field. Offering a global view that favours interpretations and historical perspectives, it explores the basic concepts of time-frequency analysis, and examines the most recent results and developments in the field in the context of existing, lesser-known approaches. Several example waveform families from bioacoustics, mathematics and physics are examined in detail, with the methods for their analysis explained using a wealth of illustrative examples. Methods are discussed in terms of analysis, geometry and statistics. This is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to understand the 'why and how' of important methodological developments in time-frequency analysis, including academics and graduate students in signal processing and applied mathematics, as well as application-oriented scientists.
