Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Tradition in Education: Ramus to Mme Necker De Saussure The history of Education in France affords an extensive and profitable field for research. Much valuable work has already been accomplished; the teachings of such reformers as Rabelais, Montaigne, and Rousseau are familiar to every training-college student, while the school practice of the Jesuits and the Port-Royalists is described in every text-book of educational history. But there are many aspects of the subject which have not yet been presented to readers in this country or even, in any detail, in France itself, although the original sources which are available present a vast amount of material. It is with the object, therefore, of filling in some of the existing lacunæ that the present volume has been prepared. It is doubtless true that education is coterminous with life itself, for, in a sense, all experience is educative. At the same time it is advisable to give terms their customary connotation and in the present case to limit education to those formative processes which aim at preparing the future citizen for a life of usefulness and service. In this book the outlook is still further restricted, for I have dealt primarily with the education of children and adolescents up to the end of what to-day would be called secondary school age; I have purposely set aside a consideration of higher education such as is the special province of the modern university. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume shares significant contemporary "Francophone" contributions to developmental psychology outside geographic and intellectual borders of French-speaking countries. Except for the spread of Piagetian theory after World War II into Anglophone psychology, these new publications have not become so well known worldwide as progress in Francophone developmental psychology warrants. However, the work of a new generation of developmental theorists and experimentalists continues to shape important and original lines of thinking and research in France, Canada, and in other French-speaking countries. This work also contributes uniquely to issues such as sensori-motor development, perception, language acquisition, social interaction, and the growth and induction of cognitive mechanisms. Scientific concepts are not only embedded in a paradigm, but also in a culture and a language. Instead of writing about Francophone developmental psychology from "outside," this volume brings together original English-language contributions written by researchers working in different Francophone countries. Chapters summarize and interpret research on a given topic, making explicit the context of philosophical and theoretical traditions in which the empirical advances are embedded. Original essays are accompanied by editorial commentaries from eminent scientists working on the same topics in other parts of the world -- topics that are closely related to Francophone streams of thought and themes of study. Together, these essays fully and faithfully represent modern scientific perspectives toward understanding many facets of mental growth and development of the young child.

Book excerpt: The Cossacks who wore German uniforms saw their service not as treason to the motherland, but as an episode in the revolution of 1917, part of an ongoing struggle against Moscow and against Communism. A Wehrmacht needing men and an SS hungry for power reinterpreted or ignored Hitler's racist ideology to form entire divisions of Cossack volunteers. German offices developed relationships to "their" Cossacks similar to those in the French and British colonial armies. The Cossacks responded by fighting effectively and reliably on the Russian Front and in the Balkans. Their reward was forced repatriation into Stalin's Gulag at the hands of the Western powers in 1945.

This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the processes of educational change in England and France by relating political, social, economic and ideological trends to the changing pattern of educational institutions from the time of the Industrial and French revolutions. The authors first assess the relevance of major sociological theories for the interpretation of the main trends in education in both countries in the first half of the nineteenth century. They then put forward an alternative approach, derived from Weber, which links educational change with social conflict. This theory of domination and assertion of groups competing for control over formal instruction before the emergence of the state system is applied to England and France in this period. The main part of the book is devoted to a more detailed analysis of the competing groups in both countries and of their ideologies which served as blueprints for educational reform.

Book excerpt: 'Learning from Comparing' is a major two-volume study which reassesses the contribution of comparative educational research and theory to our understanding of contemporary educational problems and to our capacity to solve them. At a time when educational research is under attack on the grounds of ‘bias’ and ‘irrelevance’, and under pressure to address only those questions which are acceptable politically (as good a definition of bias as any), this is a serious attempt to bridge the worlds of research, policy and practice. The editors have put together a collection – in terms of both perspective and nationality – which ensures contrasting viewpoints on each topic.
