Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This impressive . . . study charts the history of [post WWII] humanitarian relief . . . demonstrating how the institutions of the family became politicized.” (Library Journal) During the Second World War, an unprecedented number of families were torn apart. As the Nazi empire crumbled, millions roamed the continent in search of their loved ones. The Lost Children tells the story of these families. We see how the reconstruction of families quickly became synonymous with the survival of European civilization itself. Based on original research in German, French, Czech, Polish, and American archives, The Lost Children is a heartbreaking and mesmerizing story. It brings together the histories of eastern and western Europe, and traces the efforts of everyone―from Jewish Holocaust survivors to German refugees, from Communist officials to American social workers―to rebuild the lives of displaced children. It reveals that many seemingly timeless ideals of the family were actually conceived in the concentration camps, orphanages, and refugee camps of the Second World War, and shows how the process of reconstruction shaped Cold War ideologies and ideas about childhood and national identity. This riveting tale of families destroyed by war reverberates in the lost children of today’s wars and in the compelling issues of international adoption, human rights and humanitarianism, and refugee policies. “Fascinating.” ―New Republic “[A] superb book . . . [A] wide-ranging, exceptionally well-researched study.” ―Tablet Magazine “Zahra’s work is insightful in considering what treatment of lost children can tell us about broader developments in the post-war period, both in terms of how nations interacted with each other and how psychologists understood the impact of war on children.” —Times Higher Education

Book excerpt: Meet Carter Jakeman, a man in his late thirties suffering with bipolar disorder. He has resigned himself to just living in the background, frequenting bars too often and being generally miserable most of the time. The concoction of being unable to flourish in his life, combined with a dead end job and hampered relationships has only worsened his confidence and self esteem, leaving a broken and demoralised man, a man with a belief that he has no chance of happiness. Then a string of events turns everything on its head. He finds himself locked in an emotional battle as he deals with the fall-out of his brothers death and meets the woman of his dreams. This takes Carter on a journey that will not only test his fragile being, but will force into conflict all of his anxieties and fears. Will Carter find what he is looking for? Will he find solace? Love? Peace? Something.

Book excerpt: Public diplomacy, neglected following the end of the Cold War, is once again a central tool of American foreign policy. This book, examining as it does the Marshall Plan as the form of public diplomacy of the United States in France after World War Two, offers a timely historical case study. Current debates about globalization and a possible revival of the Marshall Plan resemble the debates about Americanization that occurred in France over fifty years ago. Relations between France and the United States are often tense despite their shared history and cultural ties, reflecting the general fear and disgust and attraction of America and Americanization. The period covered in this book offers a good example: the French Government begrudgingly accepted American hegemony even though anti-Americanism was widespread among the French population, which American public diplomacy tried to overcome with various cultural and economic activities examined by the author. In many cases French society proved resistant to Americanization, and it is questionable whether public diplomacy actually accomplished what its advocates had promised. Nevertheless, by the 1950s the United States had established a strong cultural presence in France that included Hollywood, Reader’s Digest, and American-style hotels.

Also included is an examination of general management attitudes to labour relations, and the book includes an overview of the distinctive features of French management, future trends, and the changes that further European integration may or may not bring.

Book excerpt: After WWII, Europe was awash in refugees. Never in modern times had so many been so destitute and displaced. No longer subjects of a single nation-state, this motley group of enemies and victims consisted of Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, ex-Soviet POWs, ex-forced laborers in the Third Reich, legions of people who fled the advancing Red Army, and many thousands uprooted by the sheer violence of the war. This book argues that postwar international relief operations went beyond their stated goal of civilian "rehabilitation" and contributed to the rise of a new internationalism, setting the terms on which future displaced persons would be treated by nations and NGOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compact illustrated guide to the emerging and enormously popular category of natural wine, a style that focuses on minimal intervention, lack of additives, and organic and biodynamic growing methods. Today, wine is more favored and consumed that it's ever been in the United States--and millennials are leading the charge, drinking more wine than any other generation in history. Many have been pulled in by the tractor beam of natural wine--that is, organic or biodynamic wine made with nothing added, and nothing taken away--a movement that has completely rocked the wine industry in recent years. While all of the hippest restaurants and wine bars are touting their natural wine lists, and while more and more consumers are calling for natural wine by name, there is still a lot of confusion about what exactly natural wine is, where to find it, and how to enjoy it. In Natural Wine for the People, James Beard Award-winner Alice Feiring sets the record straight, offering a pithy, accessible guide filled with easy definitions, tips and tricks for sourcing the best wines, whimsical illustrations, a definitive list to the must-know producers and bottlings, and an appendix with the best shops and restaurants specializing in natural wine across the country, making this the must-buy and must-gift wine book of the year.

An interaction model is derived from the results and recommendations are made for forecasting and managing risk factors.
