Though there are no records to prove it, he could probably develop and keep on developing more power per hundred pounds of his weight than any other member of the equine family. This is explained by the fact that the first animals of this breed were sent from France to Canada by Louis XIV, who liked to do things in great style and who had given instructions to his minister Colbert, the latter very much interested to see the new colony prosper, to pick out the best specimens in his country. These horses, which remained the property of the King for three years, were distributed amongst the gentlemen of Canada who had most helped colonization and farming. Rutherford, Veterinary Director General and Live Stock Commissioner, Before the Select Standing Committee on Agriculture and Colonization, 1909 Even though less given to style and showing perhaps less ambition than the Morgan and some of his other relatives, who it may he said in passing, benefited much from the strain of his blood which they undoubtedly acquired, the French Canadian was no whit. Inferior to any of them or perhaps to any horse of his weight, in strength and endurance. His hardiness and ability to thrive under the most adverse com tions were. Notable characteristics. Book excerpt: For nearly 250 years the people who built, defined, and defended Canada relied on horses to help get their job done. One breed stood out during that period for its outstanding role in Canadian life. It's known as "The Canadian, Le Canadien." In 2002, Parliament officially declared The Canadian to be Canada's national horse. The origins of the breed are in horses sent to New France at the express order of King Louis XIV. Beyond Quebec, Canadians carried settlers and the first North West Mounted Police into western Canada. They were also on hand to drag artillery and supplies through mud and thunder to Canada's victorious troops during the Battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele.

Book excerpt: When Louis XIV decided to send some 80 horses to New France between 1665 and 1671, little did he know that he was launching a new indigenous race. Those first horses would adapt to their new environment in North America, multiply and develop in virtual isolation for almost a century. From their offspring originated the Canadien horse, one of the most versatile races in equestrian history.

Book excerpt: This is the only guidebook collecting the official North America breed associations’ standards and conformations, making it a much-needed, handy, and comprehensive reference. Like the American Kennel Club's The Complete Dog Book (now in its 20th printing), this is the book for horse breeds. For each of 118 North American breeds--from ponies and small horses to pleasure horses, draft horses, and thoroughbred racers--the massive 200,000-word guide provides an official history, detailed conformation ideals, descriptions of gait and distinctive traits, temperament, colors, and variations. Fine color photographs complete the detailed picture each entry presents. This guide is destined to become the bible of the horse world.

Book excerpt: A First Nations former hockey star looks back on his life as he undergoes treatment for alcoholism in this novel from the author of Dream Wheels. Saul Indian Horse is a child when his family retreats into the woods. Among the lakes and the cedars, they attempt to reconnect with half-forgotten traditions and hide from the authorities who have been kidnapping Ojibway youth. But when winter approaches, Saul loses everything: his brother, his parents, his beloved grandmother—and then his home itself. Alone in the world and placed in a horrific boarding school, Saul is surrounded by violence and cruelty. At the urging of a priest, he finds a tentative salvation in hockey. Rising at dawn to practice alone, Saul proves determined and undeniably gifted. His intuition and vision are unmatched. His speed is remarkable. Together they open doors for him: away from the school, into an all-Ojibway amateur circuit, and finally within grasp of a professional career. Yet as Saul’s victories mount, so do the indignities and the taunts, the racism and the hatred—the harshness of a world that will never welcome him, tied inexorably to the sport he loves. Spare and compact yet undeniably rich, Indian Horse is at once a heartbreaking account of a dark chapter in our history and a moving coming-of-age story. “Shocking and alien, valuable and true… A master of empathy.”—Jane Smiley, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Golden Age “A severe yet beautiful novel…. Indian Horse finds the granite solidity of Wagamese’s prose polished to a lustrous sheen; brisk, brief, sharp chapters propel the reader forward.”—Donna Bailey Nurse, National Post (Toronto)
